My guide to a new detour

My normal route to City Tech consists of me taking the A train and getting off at Jay Street metro Tech. I then take the exist closest to City Tech and walk on Jay street to the entrance of the Namn building. However, my new route included taking the longest exist of the train station to City Tech. Rather than going straight down Jay street I took walk on Fulton street and then I took a left into a small street called Lawerence street that would take me back out to Jay street. This alley was quite smaller than Jay street and it quieter and dark. I liked this route because it was less crowded and rushed as Jay street. Although, I ended on Jay street again this detour provided some relaxation before heading out to Jay street. This alley had stores that opened later in the day like Papa Johns so this allowed there to be less traffic. I liked this route even though it was longer because it provided some relaxation.

City Tech walkers should definitely take this walk as it is a small escape from the traffic found on Jay street. Yes this walk is a little longer than my regular walk because i go in the opposite direction however, enjoying a little change is not hurting anyone. In this route you will also see another small college. Yes its a reminder you are also heading to school but i find this beneficial because you still have a grasp to reality. Yes, my objective was to find a relaxing detour but reality is important. As college students we want to focus our attention on relaxing things that help reduce stress. However, we should never lose our focus to be relax because the reason we are stressed because we are working hard for our degrees.

Possible detour

Since i am not familiar with the area around city tech i took advantage of this opportunity to explore new areas. Before going to find a detour for this assignment i know i want a quiet detour. The next morning when i got off the train i took a different out the train station. This exist took me towards Fulton and Jay street. On Fulton street there are many stores so i knew it wasn’t what i wanted for a detour. However, on Fulton there are many little streets with little stores and ten times more quieter. I enjoyed this detour because I found some peace and quiet something not on Jay street. The reason why these streets are quieter is because many of the stores around open later. For example, Papa Johns doesn’t open till later in the day. The closing of these stores doesn’t attract much people which makes this detour very pleasant.

A lifesaving detour (college student edition)

Part of the life of a New Yorker involves commuting either it be to work, school, the gym etc. As a young adult most of my commuting is to City Tech. This is my first semester to college so I haven’t had the time to explore the area of City Tech so my route has been the same. However, this project required looking for a new route that would provide some new energy. Taking a new route is definitely out of my comfort zone because I don’t like to change routes unless I’m very familiar with the area I’m in so picking this new route brought me out my comfort zone. This type of behavior is very popular among humans because change brings some sort of instability. Nevertheless, this shouldn’t shy us away from change. Positive change can help college students reduce some of the high level of stress.

My normal route to City Tech consists of me taking the A train and getting off at Jay Street metro Tech. I then take the exist closest to City Tech and walk on Jay street to the entrance of the Namn building. However, my new route included taking the longest exist of the train station to City Tech. Rather than going straight down Jay street I took walk on Fulton street and then I took a left into a small alley that would take me back out to Jay street. This street which is named Lawerence street was quite smaller than Jay street and its quieter and dark.

Surprisingly, I did encounter better energy taking this route. With my regular route I would feel very rushed to get to class. After getting off a busy and crowded train and heading towards Jay street one does feel overwhelmed. However, the detour I took allowed me to breathe, relax, and enjoy the morning. In a place like New York enjoying the morning is hard because we are all very busy getting to where we need to go. I definitely recommend this walk for city-each walkers because on Fulton you find many shops. In addition, this alley is calm, less crowded, and this alley takes you to many cute little shops. For a college student this could definitely be a enjoyable detour during any time of the day.

Taking walks are very beneficial to many aspects of our lives. According, to healthnbodytips.com, “One prominent benefit of early morning walk is that it can help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol, both of which contribute to heart disease.” When we take a detour we are adding time to get to the new location which counts as an early walk. This walk can benefit the health of our heart because morning walks help reduce stress. In addition, stylecraze.com states, ” Morning walks do more than just rejuvenating the body. They have the same positive effect on the mind as well. When you walk, the oxygen and blood supply to the brain are accelerated, and this, in turn, leads to an enhancement in mental alertness, brain function, and memory (23). Moreover, walking helps increase the brain volume and improves brain function in aged individual.” This reference helps us see that morning walks help improve our mental health. With a better mental health we are without a doubt going to have a more productive day.

As I had previously stated, change can sometimes bring a hazel because it brings us out of comfort zone and brings stress. However, Coaching Positive Performance claims, “The clearer you are about what you want, the easier it is for you to find what you are looking for.” Change can sometimes be in our control and when we have control its recommended we analyze it. With an analysis of the change we can fix possible things we may not like or even improve new changes. Change doesn’t always have to be negative as this article has shown it depends on the mindset we have going into changes. However, there are times where change is out of our control and we can face serious stress. The American Psychlogical association states, “But when you give yourself permission to step away from it, you let yourself have time to do something else, which can help you have a new perspective or practice techniques to feel less overwhelmed.” This article states the importance of removing ourselves from stressful situations temporarily. The detour we take offers us a short period of an “escape” from directly heading towards our daily activities.

In conclusion, when one is in a stress state one must remain calm and avoid additional stress. As New Yorkers and college students we can apply this by avoid taking a busy route to school after a hectic ride on public transportation. The MTA encounters many delays in the mornings which irritates commuters because it delays our activities. As college students we work very hard to achieve good academic grades which is very challenging as we juggle other responsibilities as well. The Univeristy of Michigan claims, “Many students find that they can reduce their level of academic stress by improving skills such as time management, stress management, and relaxation.” This claim emphases how important some relaxation during stress is vital. The detour in our busy lives will help us appreacite positive things like a beautiful morning. Focusing on natures beauty before a long day at school will help us relax. As we have learned a quiet place is recommendable to release stress. Reflecting on the morning is also very healthy for our minds which help improve our productivity.

Devoid

Adjective

being without a usual, typical, or expected attribute or accompaniment

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/devoid

“We want privacy, but cant stop sharing”

“imagine a world suddenly devoid of doors.”

when I first read this sentence I initially thought it meant the oppositee of void. Turns out i was Rome. The definition explains that devoid means something that is not normal. Having doors is normal but with devoid in the sentence it is letting us know that the author wants us to envision a world without doors. A world without doors would be very odd as doors are a way of privacy.

Transplant

Verb

to remove from one place or context and settle or introduce elsewhere

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/transplant

“City Limits” The Colossus of New York

“For that new transplant from Des Moines, who is starting her first week of work at a Park Avenue South Insurance firm.”

When i first read this and saw transplant i automically thought of something related to the medical field. However, the definition shows me there is more than one context that the word can be used in. The definition states an object including a person can be removed to one place to another. This is what the sentence was referring to, that Moines had been relocated.

Glorious

Adjective

possessing or deserving glory

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/glorious

“City Limits” from The Colossus of New York

“There’s the empire state building, over there are the twin towers. Somewhere in that fantastic, glorious mess was the address” (3rd paragraph)

With the definition given, I can understand that the author was trying to say that even in a mess which could be undesirable to look at possesses some beauty because of the environment it is in. This helps create a better imagination of how much glory this area has.

Technology and Society (draft)

Imagine yourself getting off the train at Jay and Metrotech. Once you get off the trains there are many exits but you must take the easiest exit which is Jay street and Wilghony street. You take the elevator up and make a left and walk down that street. You will see a couple of buildings like the Credit Union, a sunglasses store and across from you will pass the NYU building and Starbucks. As you keep walking down you will come across Kings County Family Court. You continue to walk straight but now you are crossing the street. Now you are on the campus of City Tech and across the street you will find City Tech’s new building under construction. Both of these buildings belong to City Tech however both of them are very different when it comes to their exterior. This is a clear representation of juxtaposition, which can be defined as, the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect. These two buildings have the same purpose to educate but their design is so different. The modern look of the new building is a representation as how our society is evolving with technology.

The building across the street is very modern. The exterior itself is all glass which gives it a very modern taste. A glass building gives a reputation of being sophisticated which is the contrary to the building we are in now. The building we are in has a old design but not antique. Many educational buildings have smart boards but our school has chalkboards. The truth is before I came to City Tech the last time I had a chalkboard when I was in 6 grade. Our hallways are also kinda bland they lack that modern touch the building across the street has. Getting to this location was not very long but very hectic because Jay street is very busy in general. The area that has most traffic is usually outside the train station because everyone is rushing to get to work.

I decided to chose these building because I really like to see the huge difference of buildings in New York. I like to see the change of designs architects apply to our buildings nowadays. These new buildings really help us see the change in the world we live because we have modernized. The new design of buildings help testify how much as a nation we have industrialized and how we continue to grow. The buildings that are yet to be remodeled help us see how our New York was before. These buildings have history and culture tied within them so they still have relevant value. In the reading “City Limits” written by Colson Whitehead helps support my statement multiple times. On page 3 paragraph 2 we read that Whitehead also witnessed change in his neighborhood. On the same page but 1 paragraph, Whitehead goes on to further state that he was close to the buildings but to those who an business in them. He states, “if you had known, perhaps you would have stepped behind the counter and shaken everyone’s hand, pulled out the disposable camera and insured posing instructions”. A final supportive part of the passage can be found on page 3 paragraph 3 Whitehead states that he wished his part buildings could piece his life together to show his evolution as a person.

Personally, I have mixed feeling about juxtaposition because of the effects it brings to many neighborhoods. Many neighborhoods are made by immigrants and they integrate their culture within them allowing this mixture of culture make them feel closer to home. However, this modernization takes away with this sense of home. Although, this is a downfall, our neighborhoods are becoming a more representation as a society. This is a perk because as a nation we seem more industrialized and wealthy. Unfortunately, to achieve this representation many of our beloved neighborhoods have to be sacrificed. In conclusion, juxtaposition has a beauty to it but it overshadowed other beauties within our home.

Why City Tech’s buildings?

I have chosen these building because I really like to see the huge difference of buildings in New York. I like to see the change of designs architects apply to our buildings nowadays. These new buildings really help us see the change in the world we live because we have modernized tremendously. The new design of buildings help testify how much as a industrialized nation we have grown and continue to grow. The buildings that are yet to be remodeled help us see how our New York was before. These buildings have history nad culture tied within them so they still have relevant value. A final supportative part of the passage can be found on page 3 paragraph 3 Whitehead states that he wished his part buildings could piece his life together to show his evolution as a person. This supports my idea that buildings carry history with them.

Juxtaposition in Brooklyn

Imagine yourself getting off the train at Jay and Metrotech. Once you get off the trains there are many exits you can take but you must take the easiest exit which is Jay street and Wilghony street. You take the elevator up and make a left and walk downt that tight street. You will a couple of buildings like the Credit Union, a sunglasses store and across from you will pass the NYU building and Starbucks. Bill de Blasio Here is your criteria

Monuments have been put up for many years and its purpose is to explicitly commemorate a person or event. Many figures in history have had monuments dedicated to them however, many controversial figures such as Christopher Columbus and Robert E. Lee have sparked protests. Although these men were known for their leadership they were also known to represent oppression and hate to minorities. Many Americans believe figures who represent hate and murder should not be given a monument. Nevertheless, we cannot take down a monument simply because we hate it there needs to be a non biases criteria that has a more concrete justification to remove it. The objective of this criteria is maintain stability and safety in the community if a monument fails to do so it must be taken down and moved to a local museum.
A monument cannot be taken down because we don’t like it there has to solid justification for its removal. The criteria I have created is meant to be non biases, fair, and promote safety. My the first part of my criteria involves investigating “who” this individual is. A monument cannot just go up because he was a nice guy. This monument has to have relevance to the community and its local history. Research of the foundation of this persons empowerment or historical significance is important in order to promote safety. Regardless, if the person has negative or positive background this investigation would allow us to see how the community may react and their reaction will allow to know if this monument would negatively affect safety.
The second part of my criteria refers to the safety and stability of the community because there are many lives involved. In a neighborhood, there should be no need for those who pay rent and live there have an additional burden. Controversial monuments such as the confederate statue of Robert E. Lee has spiked a lot of violence and even death. The people of Charlottesville had to have their daily routines interrupted because of police patrol and media coverage. This affects the traveling to work, school and simple daily activities therefore, this monument should not be put up. An additional, part of this criteria involves the proper maintenance of these monuments. If the statue is making the neighborhood look bad it should be removed.
The last part of my criteria helps prevent biases opinions. Everyone is entitled to look up to any individual they wish to. We cannot change people’s beliefs and opinions which is why we have so much conflict. For example, there are white supremacists in America and they look up to those who the confederate states. On the other hand, there are people that are liberals and believe these monuments of confederate leaders glorify hate and racism. To create a peace of opinions, monuments that are controversial will have a plaque that states the good as well as the bad they did. This is what makes this criteria very efficient because this criteria takes in consideration everyone’s opinion. We acknowledge the good and bad these individuals did which helps take away some of that glory they would have if the bad wasn’t stated.
During our presentations, a lot of my classmates had interesting points in their criteria. Some interesting points included how much was the cost to maintain a monument because the weather affected it.I think this is a good point because it would be a burden to continuously have to repair a monument. After evaluating the statues and one fails to meet then requirements it should be taken to a local museum. The statue would be better there because a museum acknowledges history and its place we cant condemn displays. These displays represent our history and deserve to be held there so future generations can learn from them.
In conclusion, this criteria will allow a fair display of monuments in New York. This criteria will allow there to be equal representation of opinions. I believe this is important because it will allow many New Yorkers to be tolerant of the many options that exist. If another criteria was used there will be biases. Old and modern history have taught us that when this type of criteria is utilized violence arises. We don’t need more violence we need pease but we don’t want to ignore humanities problems such as racism. This criteria covers what’s the most important thing the safety in a community while we spread awareness and tolerance. I believe if Bill de Blasio uses my criteria the people of the state of New York and himself will benefit tremendously.
