Activist

Activist: (noun) a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/activism

” Examples of his work would be his history of being an attorney and later following his brotherā€™s footsteps and becoming a president. He deserves to be memorialized because he was an activist, often called a carpetbagger.”

Although this isn’t my first time encountering this word I still don’t fully know the definition. This time I encountered the word while reading a fellow college post on part one of the second project. I think it’s important to know what this word means because it can be a person who can have a huge impact not only in the U.S but the entire world. Not to be confused with the adjective version of there word there are 2 definitions or the word activist. There’s an adjective definition which is campaigning to bring about political or social change. In this context the word was used to describe a person. Understanding a word means knowing the different ways it can be used. An example of how it an be used as an adjective would be, “activists groups around the world are coming together to organize certain events.” After learning the definition I understand that my colleague was using the noun version of the word and not the adjective.

Atrocities

Atrocities: (Noun) an extremely wicked or cruel act, typically one involving physical violence or injury.

“In a sense this project is also a history lesson in of itself and bringing the actions of these people to light is what society should do to show that people should be remembered for the good things they have brought to the future rather that of just a man who found someplace just to commit atrocities to a group of people and ruin their daily lives.”

I came across the word “atrocities” while reading one of my colleagues posts on their reflection on project 2. I read the sentence carefully and gained an understanding from the context clues. The person was speaking on how people brought good things to the future, and the key word that helped me was “rather”. Once the word rather was stated I knew a statement would be opposite of someone doing good. Before looking up the actual definition I looked up synonyms relating to the word atrocities and words such as “cruelty, abuse, horror, and abomination” came up. This word can be used to describe a terrible act committed by someone. For example, ” The penalty is only given to a criminal who committed several atrocities.” Remember an atrocity is a noun so you can use it to describe a person place or thing.

Project 2 Refelction

I enjoy the fact that we are getting into groups for this project. I feel like it will break everybody out of their shell and have everyone get to know one another. The only thing that might cause a problem is if somebody doesn’t do their part and have the other group members do the work. Finding the monuments is a good addition to this project to because it will help be get to know the school better and how it came about. For a project like this I think it would be best for the group members to have contact outside of school in case we need help, communication is key especially if we’re working on this as a team. I like to get things done as soon as possible instead of waiting last minute and I hope my group members will possess the same mindset.

The life of Brandon

To introduce myself I am a freshman at New York City College of Technology pursuing a bachelorā€™s degree in Computer Systems Technology. Since young I had a robust passion for computers, I would always tinker with my old PC which was considered a relic to all the other ones out at the time. Since then I wanted to learn more on how computers work both hardware and software. I have a very strict mindset when it comes to school and social life. Basically, I feel free to do whatever I want if I have good report card at the end of each semester. I’m not like everybody else who has that set goal in life. I do look forward on becoming an IT Specialist for a high-end tech company such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc.Ā  You could call that a goal if you want, I see it more as a plan.Ā  One of many plans I have for myself, another plan I have is to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. If Iā€™m really motivated this semester I know it’s something I can achieve. I also plan on taking summer classes next year so that I can reach the achievement of an early graduation. Thus, taking me a step closer to living a rich and opulent lifestyle in the “Golden State”, also known as California. I want to move to the west coast because I feel as if thatā€™s where all the opportunities are for me, career wise. California is well known for having its vast number of technologically-based cities. Also, because I have dreams of living on Rodeo Drive in a big mansion.

Enough about my academic life and onward to the communal aspect of my life. I live in a full house which consists of 3 brothers and both my male and female progenitors. Living in Mill Basin has its pros and cons. I live near many buses so public transportation isn’t a hindrance. I graduated from John Jay Secondary School of Law, which is in Park Slope. But I feel as if Iā€™m far from everything. I have strong passion for music as well with some of my favorite rappers being A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Max B, Don Q, and many more the list can go on. I also enjoy listening to old 80’s rock and soul music, only when Iā€™m with my dad though. Iā€™m heavily inspired by music because I feel like itā€™s more than just song lyrics and a produced beat. Itā€™s a way of art and thatā€™s how some artists portray their lives, through music. Thereā€™s underground rappers that I listen to daily such as ThouxanbanFauni, UnoTHeActivist, SkiMaskTHeSlumpGod, etc. I would consider working in the music industry if the IT field fails to comply with me thatā€™s the backup plan. Probably become a studio engineer or music producer.

In my profile picture, thereā€™s several high-end tech companies that are well known throughout the world. My intention is to get my degree in computer technology and work for one of these companies. I know I must work hard in college to complete this quest especially if I want to be a computer technician for a brand like Apple. I feel as if Apple doesnā€™t want to hire just any computer nerd, they want people willing to make change to the world, same goes for the other companies.

Some people may get a false idea and think that these are the only tech companies that I would want to work for in the future. There are over 100ā€™s of tech companies I would like to take my experiences to after I graduate college, some not even in the U.S. I just want to expand my horizons and make the world more technologically advanced.

I hope that after reading this you will gain a better understanding of who I am as a person and what I intend on becoming in the distant future. Overall, I am an easy person to get along with and Iā€™ve been told countless times that Iā€™m good at keeping conversations interesting. Throughout my years of college, I hope to meet tons of good people that can benefit me in the long run. I wish to just enjoy myself and have fun all the while working hard and staying focused.

Pragmatic

Pragmatic: (adjective) dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considers.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pragmatic

I first encountered the word pragmatic while doing psychology homework. It was inside of a question and in order for me to answer the question I would need to understand the word. Before looking up the actual definition I looked for synonyms so I could get a general understanding of the word by finding a word that I do know that is connected to pragmatic. I saw words such as “practical”, “logical”, “realistic”, etc. After looking at the synonyms I understood that it was a way of doing things with common sense or the logical way of doing things in a certain situation. An example would be , ” Imagine you applied for a job, but instead of offering the job you wanted, they offered you a lower position.” The pragmatic decision would be to accept the job with the mindset of it’s better than nothing and you might get promoted or transferred to the job you really want instead of not taking the job at all.

Cognition

Cognition: (noun) The mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cognition

“What does the term confirmation bias refer to in the study of cognition? Give an example of a confirmation bias that you have encountered, observed or heard about, either in yourself or in someone else.”

I encountered this word while doing my psychology homework. This isn’t the first time I encountered this word but I had to know what it meant in order to answer the question. Before I looked up what it meant I tried to use context clues to get a better understanding. The question had stated ” …refer to in the study of cognition?” so I knew that cognition had to do with the brain and a humans intellect. Also because the question was under the category “FunctionsĀ of brain and Intellect”. It’s a word that definitely ties with psychology which is the study of behavior and the mind. Now that I gained an understanding of the word I will give an example of how to use it in a sentence. The thought process you undergo when trying to solve a math process is an example of cognition.
