Journal entry 3

I used both Google Scholar and EBSCO to search my topic. Initially Google Scholar was an easier interface to understand. I could type with natural language and the search engine provided various articles that could be related to my topic. My largest issue was that there were too many articles, most of them had very little connection to my actual topic. Using EBSCO was more challenging. The database did not register natural language, my and/or search terms were generating completely off topic articles. After trying various combinations of key words I was able to find some substantial articles that directly related to me topic. While the search engine is more user friendly I found that the database had provided more relevant articles once the correct parameters were utilized

Research Journal 3

I used Google Scholar search engine and EBSCO database to find article and book for my research paper. While searching for any article or book, I didn’t find much difference between these two. When I tried to get full article, I got full pdf on EBSCO without any problem but Google Scholar was telling me to add it to your cart, purchase it, subscribe to this publication and log in first etc. At the end I find myself using EBSCO database more than Google Scholar, Because I don’t want to waste my time on doing that stuff when I can get that same article on  EBSCO without any complication.

Research journal

For my research topic, I chose EBSCO and Google. For EBSCO, I just typed in the phrase “zines”.  For Google, I typed in the phrases “zines and distribution”.  The results from EBSCO and Google were both articles.  The author or editor of the article on EBSCO is not listed. The editors of the Google article are listed. EBSCO lists the source, source type, document type, abstract and accession number of the article.  The Google article does not list as much information. Both EBSCO and Google have ads on their pages, and invitations to sharing with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, et cetera. The Google article adds on tips and warnings, unlike the EBSCO article.

What words or phrases did you use to search?

Some the keyword and phrases I used during my research are:

Abuse of USA Patriot Act, Patriot Act privacy concern, patriot act civil liberties violation, national security letter abuse or overuse, FBI monitoring of U.S Citizen, wiretapping, etc…

What are the similarities and differences between the results of your two searches?

In my opinion there aren’t that many similarities when comparing a standard search engine and a scholarly one.   Maybe it’s the fact that I’m not used to scholarly search engines but to me they are a little confusing and frustrating to navigate, especially around the pay wall. The only positive aspect is when you are fortunate enough to get a result that match what you’re looking for, there is an abundance of information compared to what a standard search engine produces. I think that the results that are produced by the standard search engine are more helpful. They are easier to navigate and produce a lot more usable links.

Research Journal Entry 3

Dear Journal,

Today, I have continued my research on my topic: copyright and fair use. When I started searching, I first type in specific keywords. Obviously, they are “copyright” and “fair use”. The databases I’ve used provided some promising results, about half of them gave me pretty much the same information. A few of the sources say that people continue to steal ideas even though they are fully aware of the consequences they would endure. Others say that remixes, mash-ups, and various versions of an original work are under fair use because the overall idea is preserved. I’m sure there is a lot more information out there just waiting for me to obtain them. However, it won’t be easy because some of my searches will not help me at all due to either lack of information or irrelevance. In the end, I must get my hands on more sources. I believe that this action will further improve my research. Looks like I must get back to work. Time is not on my side here and therefore, must make every second count.

Sincerely,

Virgilio Samo III

Notes from today (4/9) and reading/blogging homework for Thursday 4/11

Today we wrapped up the Finding Information and Media section of the course with a discussion on finding articles in library databases. Slides from today are available here. Some library databases that I recommend (some of which we searched in class) are the following:

Review the list of library databases or browse by subject area here. If you locate articles using Google Scholar or another resource check here to see if the library can provide you with full-text access. For issues with off-campus access, review the off-campus database access instructions.

On Thursday, 4/11, we’ll move into a discussion on using information and media, starting with how to evaluate information sources. For Thursday, please review the following two websites thoroughly:

UC Berkeley Library, Evaluating Web Pages:  Techniques to Apply & Questions to Ask

Florida Gulf Coast University, Quick guide to evaluating websites.

Cornell University Libraries, Critically analyzing information sources.

Your blogging assignment is one research journal blog post. Write one 100-word post in response to this prompt:

Do a search on your research topic in at least one internet search engine and one library database. What words or phrases did you use to search? What are the similarities and differences between the results of your two searches?

Research Journal 2

Whenever searching for scholarly journal articles online, often I would use Google and Google Scholar in order to look for them.  For Thursday’s class, we did experiment using the laptops to find online sources for our research papers.  I did found one interesting source that I might possibly use as one of my sources, a hearing case involving content piracy from the Library of Congress. Google would be useful for finding news, blog, magazine, and other online articles compared to Google Scholar in terms of journal articles.  Currently, my search for sources is going well since I have done research papers before, but I will probably experience a few issues when doing the annotated bibliography as I have not done one before.

Notes from today (4/4) and reading and writing assignments for Tuesday, April 9

Today we discussed how to find information in library catalogs. Your searches in class should have produced some results — be sure you document your findings somehow, in EasyBib or another citation manager, by email or text message, or by another method of your choice. Slides from today are available here. Remember that you can still get partial credit for late blog posts; submit your post within 48 hours of today’s class to get partial credit (see the research journal prompt here).

On Tuesday, April 9 we will discuss the use of library databases to find articles, images, and other information. Please read Badke, ch. 5, pp. 94-120. Your annotated bibliography is also due by the beginning of class on Tuesday, April 9. Please get in touch with any questions you have about the upcoming assignments.

~Prof. Leonard

Research Journal Blog Post 2

I used Google Scholar to start finding scholarly sources that relate to my research topic question. I did find a few scholarly sources that I will be using for my research, but compared to a regular internet search I did on Google, the scholarly articles provided more credible and in-depth information than using just Google search. Google search had shorter articles where, at the end of the article, people can comment and share their opinions related to the article. Those comments sometimes gave me a new insight on the topic that I wasn’t aware of before or even directed me to go to a website where further information can be found. Using a scholarly internet resource helps me feel more trustful in the information I’m reading, but it can be difficult at first when I’m trying to figure out what keywords or syntax I should use to find the relatable sources to my topic.

Research Journal 2

My research paper is about computer technology. I got to find so much useful information while researching about this topic. For example I got to know many websites which can be used for extra useful knowledge or can help in education. I am having little problem in writing annotated bibliography. Since it’s my first time I am writing annotated bibliography, I don’t really know how I should state how this source is helping me in my research paper. My research paper is going well so far. I am not having any problem in finding information which I need for my topic.
