Documentation hw

The video I have seen, I’ve used. It is a very helpful video and the commentary is good because the video contains jokes and give people a comfortable vibe from the narrators. They go by each step and show you a close to accurate way to complete the task. It may not explain how to use the character, but it is a video for mostly people who play the game or know about the game. Also this video can be watch more then once if you need a refresher on how to do it. Since it is a video game and a video it is easier to show a task because there will be less explanation.

Blog/Citing

Citing information is important and necessary for many reasons and one of them is acknowledgment for who wrote the book/article. To me citing makes your source relevant, and supports what ever work you are doing. People who read your work always want to know where your information came from, It validates your work. because if you do not put where it came from, people will judge your work and may not believe its factual. People also may think you plagiarized your work or copy it because it was not cited. Cite work by posting the web address or you could always use easybib.com, to cite works.

Homework #10 – Charles Baculima-Castillo

The main problem I have had with the Research Topic Proposal was finding and creating the topic question. I have had many ideas to start with but because I was trying to prevent my question from becoming too narrow, they ending up being too broad. I have always found it difficult to set the standard of a topic from being too general. The feedback from Professor. Leonard really helped me out with this problem. One strategy that I used to help deal with this, was that I choose a topic that I really liked, in this case, it’s the internet and media. I always tend to better when I write about a topic that I like rather than on something I do not. I honestly did not have any questions about the assignment since it was pretty straight forward.

Homework #9 – Charles Baculima-Castillo

The first reaction I had when I read Liddy’s article about search engines was that I was mind blown. I had an idea that how a search engine works would be complicated but I had no idea that there were so many steps revolving around this process. One aspect that I greatly wanted to touch on was the “stop words”. Stop words is a step that pretty much eliminates and negates common words like “the” and “is”. This step is really important because without this, someone can have a much harder time to search what they really want because these words would cause interference.

Notes from today, and reading and blogging assignment for Wednesday, October 17

Today we discussed metadata, controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and folksonomies. I hope you got a chance to experiment with blog post tagging using the controlled vocabulary of the LC subject headings. Slides from today are available here.

On Wednesday we’ll begin our discussion of the mechanics of searching, including how search engines works and search engine optimization. For Wednesday, 10/17 please read the following:

Your blogging assignment is one reading response blog post.

Remember to get in touch if you have any questions about the research topic proposal, due on Wednesday, October 24. I’ll make time to continue working on the topic development exercise when we meet Wednesday.

Homework #8 – Charles Baculima-Castillo

In the video “Laws that Choke Creativity” Lessig goes over history in the way that someone from the past viewed how technology would shape and change the future. For example, he discusses how John Philip Sousa used to enjoy music by hearing people actually sing and not depend on vocal machines, like auto-tune, to make music. Another example was William Blackstone’s perception of land in which he believed that no one has the right to trespass someone’s land, way above or below the ground, without the land owner’s consent. With technology growing throughout the years, the invention of planes and helicopters took place. This was problematic for several landowners since planes and helicopters would cross many pieces of land, in the sky, without their consent. As the time was evolving so has the law. The land laws were changed so that planes or any other aircraft that flew over other people’s land were not considered trespasses. This had to change because if the government would have kept the old land law. then flight trips would become impossible since they would get sued by many land owners for “trespassing”.

My thoughts on plagiarism are probably the same as everyone else. There’s no excuse for stealing someone’s ideas or words. At the beginning of every semester, we listen to professors talk about the syllabus and put extra emphasis behind the plagiarism rules but nothing ever seems to come of it. Ever since junior high school, i’ve heard students talk about copying someone’s paper or copying and pasting from the Internet but  I’ve never known a fellow student who’s gotten caught plagiarising and who has faced penalties. Part of me thinks that professors are tentative about accusing a student because there’s a fine line between blatantly copying someones work and being influenced by someone’s work.

Homework #7 – Charles Baculima-Castillo

The first thing that came to mind when reading this article was that any one can be found guilty of plagiarism if they commit it, for example in here it’s Eugene Tobin, the ex president of Hamilton College. I’ve always known about the seriousness of plagiarism throughout my life as it was always discussed in my previous classes whenever I’ve had to do a research project. I completely agree with Isserman that plagiarism is wrong and unjustified because the person is taking someone else’s words and ideas as if it were their own and not giving the original source credit. In my opinion, I see plagiarism as a form of theft in all honesty.

Exposure HW#6

“Avoiding social networking site is not, however, a guarantee of privacy. For IPSs and search engine providers can learn a good deal about customers by tracking the searches they make.” In reading both assigned articles I concluded what I had learned before in one of my classes, which is that not only do social websites expose our personal information we give but also other non social websites that use our information for contact, promotion, ads, and so on. I myself have a facebook account but I make sure I don’t provide personal information I want other to know. In the facebook article where there was an example of burglars knowing when someone would be in vacation to make there act, that actually happen to my co worker. There is no more privacy in the web so the only thing is to due is look for other alternatives or make sure a web is trust worthy, like buying a textbook online.
