- Find a Mentor Publication. So if your genre is a blog, find an example of a blog that you like and want to model your piece after, or a news article, etc. NOTE, it can be one of your sources or one of the pieces we have read/ watched this year! Write a BRIEF description of what you like about the mentor piece and what text features/ genre elements you might use from it.
- Answer the following questions about YOUR Genre! Be as specific as possible. If you can start to add examples and specifics it will help you with the drafting and writing process. That is going to be the next step.

Write a proposal that is at least 200 words. The proposal should answer the following questions in depth. That means don’t just answer the question: What is the genre. Article. But what type of article, maybe even start thinking about a specific publication for the article.
- A 1-2 sentence statement of what you want to teach your audience (the most important thing you learned in Module 2);
- The audience you are trying to reach
- Your purpose (or really how you are hoping your audience will react)
- The genre you are planning to write in and why you chose it
- The KEY Elements of the genre (what has to be included to make it an example of the genre!)
- A plan — how do you intend to get started?
- Anything you might be worried about. What are your concerns about finishing this project?

- “Popular Culture Is Killing Writing” by Bronwyn T. Williams. Answer the following questions on OpenLab.
- What did you think of this text? Explain! Be honest! Did you find any parts interesting? Did you learn something new?
- What is it mostly about? Write a 2-3 sentence summary. Be specific. Refer to the text itself. Use quotes even!
- What is the genre of the text? What is the tone?
- Who do you think is the intended audience of the piece? Who is meant to read this text?
- What do you think is the purpose of this text? Why do you think the author wrote it?
- Some people argue that popular culture is killing writing, explain their argument.
- The author disagrees with the argument that popular culture is killing writing. What proof does the author provide that in fact, popular culture is not only killing writing but helps student writing. Provide 1-2 examples.
- Do you agree or disagree with the author’s argument? Explain! Use examples of your writing to support your argument.
- Think about WHAT you are going to include in your drafts. Begin your drafts. Start to PARAPHRASE, SUMMARIZE and QUOTE from your sources!
