Esteemed Students!

Exercise your right to VOTE!  New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is a statewide not-for-profit organization that does important work on higher education, the environment, voting access, and other social justice issues.  It has a chapter here at City Tech!  Like many not-for-profit organizations, NYPIRG has a Board of Directors that governs it.  What makes NYPIRG’s Board unique is that it is comprised entirely of STUDENTS!!  Directors are elected from each of our campus chapters.

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT!!  The deadline to vote is 9pm TONIGHT (Thurs. Sept. 24).  Here’s how to Vote:

If you’d like more information on City Tech’s chapter of NYPIRG, contact Abigail Thomas (athomas@mail.citytech.cuny.edu) or Juvanie Piquant (jpiquant@mail.citytech.cuny.edu) or me!

QUIZ tomorrow! 11:30am-12 noon on Blackboard

Lovely Students,

DON’T FORGET!  Tomorrow (Monday, Sept. 21) you will take QUIZ #1 in our 1101/Intro class from 11:30am-12 noon!  We will not meet on Zoom at 11:30am—instead, you will go to our course Blackboard site, look under “Content,” where you will find and complete the quiz.  When you finish, or at 12 noon at the latest, you’ll join our class at the regular Zoom link where we’ll have class till our regular 12:45pm.

If you have questions during the quiz, you may ask me by joining the regular class Zoom link (which I’ll have open) or by calling me at 718.260.4939.  If you get my voicemail, leave a message with your number and I’ll call you back promptly.  Do not email or text me because I may not see it in time to send you a response!  The quiz should be available by 11:15am and you’ll have until 12 noon to complete it.  If you studied, it will not take you more than 30 minutes to complete.

THANK YOU to those of you who posted reflections on Justice Ginsburg’s life!  You’re still welcome and encouraged to do that for extra credit–see my post below (category: Announcements).  THANK YOU also to those who posted the law offices where you’d like to work!   If you didn’t, there’s still time, they’re due by 11am tomorrow (Monday).  I look forward to reviewing them with you!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, good luck on the quiz tomorrow, I look forward to seeing you 12 noon on Zoom!

Sad news – but extra credit & Law in Culture opportunities!

Esteemed Students,

You may have learned that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died yesterday (Friday, September 18).  In my view, this is a tremendous loss to the legal community, of which you are now a part, and to our nation.  Justice Ginsburg was known as “the face of the Trump resistance” and the “Notorious RBG.”  She was a trailblazer in the field of civil rights, particularly for women’s rights, for which she fought tirelessly as an attorney and as a judge.

RBG would want you to earn extra credit as a result of her passing.  If you would like to earn up to four extra points on your midterm exam in either Intro (1101) or Civil Procedure (1103), please read this or another article about Justice Ginsburg and post a reflection on it and Justice Ginsburg’s life here on OpenLab.  Please write at least 150 words and should identify the article or other source you read including its title, author, and publication where you read it (such as New York Times).  You may write positive or negative things about RBG–though I am a tremendous fan, you don’t need to be in order to earn extra credit.  Please check “RBG” as the category.

She would also want to be the subject of your “Law in Culture” review.   Tonight (Saturday, Sept. 19) at 10pm, CNN is showing “RBG,” an excellent documentary on Justice Ginsburg’s life, for free.  I saw it, and it’s excellent!  Here is a link to information about it, including clips and where to find it.  (For whatever it helps, CNN is channel 78 on my television, in Brooklyn with Spectrum cable.)  In the link, scroll down for other interesting tidbits like RBG’s workout routine, her “#MeToo” moment, and why some people have tattoed her picture on their bodies.  If you watch the documentary and would like to write your Law in Culture review on it instead of something you named previously, that’s totally fine, just let me know.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, see you Monday,

Prof. C.
