Week 11 Discussion

  • The designers that interests me is Keith Haring. Another design trend im interested in is graffiti.
  • What draws me to Keith Haring is the color, simplicity of designs and the different graphic styles and stories they tell. Im also interested in graffiti because of its nature of being street art. Its a creation of courageousness that has a style im a fan of.
  • Im not sure which time frame in particular but im thinking Keith Harings 1982 Andy Mouse.
  • We have discussed linguistics, systematic techniques and designing for a purpose.
  • Josef Muller Brockmann and the grid and design philosophy, Walter Gropius and designing for a purpose to sole problems and to portray the events happening within the world, and Roland Barthes Rhetoric of an image.
  • Currently I dont have a theory formulated for my choice of design.

Yes Simon, this seems like a great starting point. I like the idea of focusing on this series. However, as it is only 4 prints, you might frame your analysis by referencing one or two other projects by Haring and/or Andy Warhol.

Being that the dollar sign is so prominent in these prints, it could make sense to think about that commercial aspects of some the work that these artists were creating around that time. For example, in the same year, Haring created the Pop Shop, essentially to sell graffiti work. At the same time, he was expressing extremely anti-consumerist messages in the street art that he was still creating. Meanwhile Andy Warhol was taking many commissions for magazine work and celebrity portraits.

You should also consider the ways in which these artists’ work fit into traditional ideas of fine art vs. design. Both seem to blur the line between the two fields. I think it worth considering the ways that Haring’s approach combines art and design, while questioning the nature of both.

In addition to the theories you mentioned, you might also think about the constructivists, the underground/mainstream idea, and there is an article by Jan Van Toorn for next week that could be really interesting to consider.

As you spend more time applying these ideas to the work in question, I’m sure the theory will develop!
