Natalie Soto: The Final Project

For the final project my topic will be street photography. Street photography interests me and I will focus on various neighborhoods within the city including mine. I won’t just be focused on people but on the backgrounds and architecture that surround the subject itself. The purpose of this project will show how far I’ve come in the topic of photography. I want to be able to highlight my conceptual thinking and design sense for this final project. I will shoot both people in different locations and various subjects such as trains, shops and buildings. It will look instantaneous. I will shoot in an instant any kind of subject in any kind of setting. I won’t pick and choose and stick to a certain theme. It will appear to be without notice, just as it looks like in the example below:

Street Photography

In the example this looks like it was taken in an instant rather than set up beforehand like a scene. Since I will be shooting outside I will not be using any kind of background lighting or flash. I will shoot in the daytime and at different times of the day and at different locations as well.

Lab: Week 12-On-camera fill flash

Use the on-camera flash in three ways to take portraits:

  1. In diffused light, use it at a low power directly at the subject.
  2. In diffused light, use it straight up with the catch light flap up to create a catch light.
  3. In diffused light, bounce it off a reflector to add soft but directional light to the face.

Remember to:

  1. Consider the background!
  2. Use shallow depth of field to separate the subject from the background
  3. Select a flattering focal length – about 65 mm for our class cameras, 85 mm for full-frame cameras
  4. Focus on the eyes

Put your best 20 in an album on Flickr and send the best two to the class group.

Final Project Statement – Guen Fung

Topic: What is it about? What genre of photography interests you and would you like to explore: street photography, food photography, portrait photography

What purpose will it serve in your portfolio? Do you want to highlight your

conceptual thinking, your design sense, your lighting skills

I am interested in street photography, but I want to explore it in the area that I am familiar with since I was young, and this would be Chinatown in Manhattan. How this can serve in my portfolio is getting a feel of photography in my motion graphics. This helps me to highlight my conceptual thinking skills of when to put in a footage or not and how to edit it to look good / feels right in After Effects or Premiere Pro.

Subject Matter: Literally what will you shoot?

Street photography, stores such as a fish market.

Style: What will it look like? How will you use photographic style to communicate

emotion and point of view? Find at least one example and include at least one

image with your description.

I want the mood to be uplifting, so the point of view should be open minded and showing community. The photo below shows how it is home as Chinatown for many people, it has both English and Chinese signs which brings it to life.

Lighting: how will you light your project? This may be daylight.

I would be using daylight for my photography.

Week 12 – On-camera flash

Flash Basics

Ambient Light-the existing light that you cannot control

Fill Flash-brightens shadows

Built-in flash-part of the camera and throws light about 6 to 10 feet

External flash-added to the camera on the hot shoe and can throw light 15 to 20 feet

ETTL (Evaluative-Through The Lens) is a Canon EOS flash exposure system that uses a brief pre-flash before the main flash in order to obtain a more correct exposure.

Fill Flash

Use M or manual.

1/1 is full power. Full stops are 1/2, 1/4, 1/8/ 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128.

Use Zoom to spread or focus the light. Wide angle numbers (smaller numbers) spread the light as for a wider shot with a wide angle lens. Higher numbers focus the light for a telephoto shot.

High speed sync-allows the camera to be set at shutter speeds higher than the camera sync speed

The Final Project Statement_Giulia

Topic: The photography that I will try to reproduce is food/product photography. I will try to create contexts and interesting background (that we usually modify or add in Photoshop using exiting pictures) for the product advertised with real props, or picturing the product in a real context such as a restaurant countertop or a kitchen table.

The purpose of those pictures will be to explore stop motion to create gifts and short videos for social media. I would like to focus on lighting and composition to create better food photography which is already in my portfolio and show my skills in stop motion.

Subject Matter: I will shoot the NAKED juice or smoothie

Style: The pictures will be colourful, playful and I will use different props to make the picture interesting.

The short videos from Huddlstudio captured my attention (which I discovered scrolling Instagram) and they are my first inspiration. They create stop motion videos for different brands. I will try to recreate exotic or daily contexts like the one in the pictures attached.

Lighting: I will use daily light and spot lights to enhance the product and the scene. Lighting will be the biggest challenge in this project since I don’t have professional lights, but I will do my best
