As a freshmen coming into City tech, I was nervous but soon that nervousness turned into excitement when I got my syllabus of my ENG 1101 class. The reason for my excitement was when I saw all the things we were going to do where going to be fun because the class was going to work on a course that was fun and interesting. The course was called “Being in Brooklyn”. Now I was in Learning community which meant that my ENG 1101 and SPE 1130’s class work will over lap. This added to the fun even more and life easier. This ENG 1101 class will help us enhance you skills of writing long essay to short summaries and also reading. This class also helps you in doing your research more easily and also how to research in more credible ways. In this course called being in Brooklyn you guys will learn about the neighborhood of city tech and also learn a lot about rest of the Brooklyn. This course will cover some interesting sorties of past so be ready to learn some amusing facts. In this class we used one word almost everyday,”Location”. Since this course requires you to do a lot of research on various locations so be ready to be picking a good location on which you will have to do a speech and also write an essay. This class also requires you to go on a few walking tours, some with class and some by yourself. These walking tours make the class very interesting and fun so be ready for a lot of walking. This class might get little challenging but than if you have professors like Professor Steve Davis and Professor Jody Rose than you will be fine. They will help you anytime and in anyway possible. Another advice will be to ask them whenever you need help and also don’t leave your until the last day. It won’t be your best work since you won’t put our full effort to the work.

Brooklyn bridge Summary
Brooklyn Bridge, This Bridge represents New York and when people think of New York, they think of the Brooklyn Bridge. This Bridge was planned and masterminded by A German born Immigrant named John A. Roebling. However before John A. Roebling could start the construction, he died when he was inspecting the site and got injured and died few days later from an infection, his son Washington Roebling took over since he had helped his dad with the maps of the bridge. When the construction was started the hardest part was the digging the foundations. This problem was solved wit the idea of casssions where a enormous wood box with air compressed into them with no bottom would be sunk into bottom an d workers would dig the foundation and this was dangerous work that caused a lot of illness also to Washington A Roebling leaving him paralyzed for life and his wife Emily had to take over. In this bridge the most interesting part are the 276 long towers. Adopted from the gothic architecture and made of limestone’s they add to the beauty of the Bridge. The Bridge also connects Brooklyn and Manhattan making life easier for thousand of people and helped New York to be what it is today.
The Lank Mark Of New York
The Brooklyn Bridge, One of the most famous landmarks of New York. It extends for 5,989 feet and it is one of the best things in New York. It was the reason why New York became what it is today. The Bridges construction started in 1869 by the man called John Augustus Roebling. It was completed on May 24 1883 and the first day estimate of 250,000 people walked across on the bridge promenade. The bridge connected the two major boroughs of New York City today, the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Bridge was completed but do people today wonder how the construction must have felt like or the how John Augustus Roebling managed to do this. Well that is what I will tell you guys today how the Brooklyn Bridge was built, who built it and how it has helped New York City.
The man who thought of he Bridge is John Augustus Roebling. He was a great pioneer in the design of steel suspension bridges. He was born in Germany in 1806 and migrated to Pennsylvania and tried to be a farmer but could not be successful so he moved to the capital Harrisburg, where he found work as a civil engineer. He promoted the use of wire cable and established a successful wire-cable factory. While working he earned a reputation as a designer of suspension bridges, which at the time were widely used but known to fail under strong winds or heavy loads. However Roebling found a solution, a web truss added to either side of the bridge roadway that greatly stabilized the structure. Roebling slowly made his name and with help of this technology he successfully bridged the Niagara Gorge at Niagara Falls, New York, and the Ohio River in Cincinnati, Ohio. Than in 1867 the legislature approved to of a bridge over the east river of Manhattan and Brooklyn that was proposed to them by Roebling who was popular at that time due to his achievements in making bridges. However when John was inspecting the site he hurt himself and 17 days later he passed away. Than his son Washington A. Roebling, took over as chief engineer. Roebling had worked with his father on several bridges and had helped design the Brooklyn Bridge.
The master mind was not there but his plans were there through his son Washington A. Roebling. He took over and started the construction of the bridge which was going to create history. The biggest challenge of the construction was how it will be held together? How will it be strong enough to hold a bridge that big? Well the answer was the inventive idea of John Roebling to use steel instead of iron. The other problem was digging of the foundation but the idea of caisson work solved the problem. Caissons, enormous wooden boxes with no bottoms, were sunk in the river. Compressed air was pumped into them, and men inside would dig away at the sand and rock on the river bottom. The stone towers were built atop the caissons, which sank deeper into the river bottom. Now the caissons work was tough and risky and the people that took this risk were called the”sandhogs”. These workers were mostly immigrants that earned abut $2 a day. They used shovels and dynamite to clear away the mud and boulders at the bottom of the river. Each week, the caissons inched closer to the bedrock. When they reached a sufficient depth of44 feet on the Brooklyn side and 78 feet on the Manhattan side they began laying granite, working their way back up to the surface. How ever the conditions in the caissons were not good and it led to illness and this also affected the brain of this bridge, Washington A. Roebling. He was paralyzed and his wife Emily Roebling took over and helped her husband complete the bride.
When the foundation was completed the other big task was the cables. Spinning the cables was as a big thing since I was no easy thing to cover the whole bridge with cables. The spinning cable began in the summer of 1877 and was finished after a year and four months. However it took another five years to suspend the roadway from the cables and have the bridge ready for traffic. Finally after all the hard work the bridge was completed in 14 years and on May 24, 1883 the bridge was opened to the public. The Bridge cost $15 million double than what John A .Roebling had expected.
The Bridge took a lot of money and man power to build it but how did the bridge help New York? Well it basically turned New York City into what is it is today. It turned New York City into the most important commercial metropolis in the United States. It connected the boroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The bridge increased the population of Brooklyn from 580,000 to one million in the first 15 years opened and solved the problem of lack of house on the small island of Manhattan. The bridge also helped it economically. The Brooklyn Bridge created one of the largest economic centers in the world by facilitating the safe transportation of goods and labor between these two metropolitan areas. Now people can easily live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan. At 276.5 feet over high water, the bridge also allows the large commercial ships underneath the bridge.
The Brooklyn Bridge is the symbol of New York City. It is a national monument of New York and it has helped make this city what it is today. The idea of John A. Roebling and the hard work put in from his son and daughter in law Washington a. Roebling and Emily Roebling connected Brooklyn and Manhattan and changed the course of history of New York City. Imagine what the bridge was not built than we would have never experienced the success New York has seen. It helped us in many ways and we should remember all the hard work, the mind used for this and all the money used to build this great landmark, The Brooklyn Bridge.

View of the world from the 9th Avenue
On this map we can see how the author feels that how NYC city is different from all of the other states or cities. He views this map from the vintage point of 9th avenue and he covers the 10ths avenue. The two avenues are filled with traffics, people, and buildings. Than the map shows the Hudson river and than few other states such as Jersey, Las Vegas, Nebraska and also includes some cities. The area that covers these sates or cities is a plain area. Than he jus has the border line of Mexico ,Canada and he also includes the countries such as Russian, Japan and china. All of these areas are just there nothing really to look at. this tells the message that the author is to show you here. New York is more attractive, fun or busy than all the states or cities together. He shows how the other cities or states are not busy like New York is. He shows the difference of the Live New York compared to dull other cities or sates. He means that new York is more busier and it is fun.
The happiest and the saddest place in New York
The happiest place? well the first thing that comes to mind when I think the happiest place is Times Square. I think it is the happiest place for me because that is the main attraction of New York City. No matter what the time is that place will be live and it is always fun going there. On Christmas there is also a Christmas tree there and that whole area just looks amazing. I always have fun and just enjoy my time while I am there and it makes me happy. Than there are all the stores to shop at. It is just an amazing place and it always makes me happy when I go there.
The saddest place in New York for me would be the walking place near sears bay in Brooklyn. It is a walking place right next to the ocean and I think it is sad because that is a place where somebody will go to when they are sad or stressed about something. I use to work around there and would go there when I was stressed or any kind of tension in my mind.

Today we had another joint session to visit the city tech college library. It was really nice to see how big our library was and also the resources the library provides us to work with for our studies. We learned how to search for information online and using the books to search for information to help us with our research. We learned how to use search engines like Google and find information. We should use important key words so we will find more narrowed results and also more credible. We should avoid Wikipedia since many people use that and it is also editable by anybody. Than we learned how to use the library catalog to find books that an help us with our research. We should use the authors name or search more specifically by using the key words from the title of the book. Than we also learned about he citation of work we do. We learned about the different styles that are used while citing work and why it is important to cite our work.
Walt Whitman Park
I have been living here in Brooklyn for 10 years now. In this 10 years I have seen most of the New York. However I had not seen the Down Town area of Brooklyn until I came to see my college “The New York City College Of Technology”. I really liked this area, all the shopping places, the courts, the food courts and colleges around. However I never really explored this area. Than one day me and my friend decided to go walk around and go sit in some park or a good place to sit and do our work. We came across the park”Walt Whitman Park”.
The park is located on Cadman Plaza East. It was easy for me to get there since it was close to my college. I took walked out of the main building on jay street and walked north to Tillary street. I took a left on the Tillary street and walked two blocks. I was amazed to see that how my college buildings cover the whole block. Than I got to Cadman Plaza and took a left and walked like a half a block and I was there. The park is on the right side of the cadman plaza East street.
The park is just an amazing place to go to. This park is made to Honor a famous poet named Walt Whitman. He was a famous poet, journalist and a native New Yorker. He was really a role model for free thinkers and his poetry was really known all over. As I was sitting in the park I noticed a really nice looking building across from the area I was walking. The building is Called the New York Office Of Emergency Management also known as the NYS OEM. It was really interesting for me to see the Juxtaposition between the park and the building of NYS OEM.
The two places show a lot of Juxtaposition. The park is a quiet place where people come to jog, walk, family time or to do their school work. It has benched made of stones, tracks to run on and a nice grassed place for people to spend quality time. On the other NYS OEM buliding is really different from the park. It is built with a lot of the modern technology as it IS the first “Green” building. It has efficient mechanical systems, recycled materials and locally manufactured materials and it is also certificated by the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating System. The NYS OEM building is responsible for coordinating the activities of all State agencies to protect New York’s communities and the environment from natural and man-made disasters and emergencies. The building also has nice looking mirror windows, marble made walls, and fire exits. The NYS OEM building is very crowded with its employees, computers, and all technical things. Compared to the park the building is much more crowded, noisy, different structure and there is more activity in the NYS OEM building compared to the park. This shows the juxtaposition and also shows how tow complete different environments are so close by.
The Walt Whitman Park is very significant since it pays tribute to a true native New Yorker. It honors Walt Whitman and all the work of his. His really influenced the free thinks and was really good journalist as well. This park also provides a great place for families to come and have a good time. It shows the respect the city has for its important people of New York in the history.
I also took a picture to show the juxtaposition between the two locations. The picture captures the structure difference. It shows how one location is natural and how a man made location is different from each other. However it does not show the juxtaposition such as the peace of the park and the noisiness of the building, the computers inside and the benches outside.
I think this park is very important for this location in many different ways. However some people might not agree with me but I feel every person has their own way of looking at things. “There are eight million naked cities in this naked city”. This was said by Colson Whitehead in his work called the “City Limits”. This means that everybody living in New York view New York in a different way. They all have their own version of New York. I feel that in my version n this park means a lot. It is a great place for the student s to come here study, families to have fun, people to exercise and for kids to play. This park brings more people to this area and people like coming here.
Colson White head in his “City Limits” also says “you start building your private New York the first time you lay your eyes on it”. This means that the first time you come to New York and see this great place you start to remember in a certain way, your version of New York. When I saw the park I thought it was really nice, peaceful, and it is great that this park is here. I feel in my version of New York this park means a lot to the people that live around here and also adds a lot to this area.
We know that this park is made to honor Walt Whitman but I still have few Questions. Why was this park made here like why this location? When was this park made? Does the government plan on adding any new things to the park? How this park can be made better? These are the things that I really want to know about this park. Down Town Brooklyn is really an amazing place. It has many places to visit and to explore and Walt Whitman Park is one of them.

For project 2 the location i have chosen is The Brooklyn Bridge.Brooklyn bridge is about 15 mins away from our college City Tech. This Bridge was opened on May 24, 1883. This Bridge I feel connects it all. It has a really Nice view too and a very long and interesting history.
“There are Eight Million naked cities in this naked city” said by Colson Whitehead in his work”City Limits”. This quote means that everybody that lives in New York has their own version of New York. They have seen it in a way different than ours and still remember it that way. That’s why i feel that Brooklyn bridge connects it all.
The other quote i choose is “You start Building your private New York the time first time you lay your eyes on it” by Colson White head in City Limits. This means that the first time you see New York, at that moment you start to build your version of new York. The first time i saw Brooklyn bridge i was was excited and saw it as a connecting bridge for many things.
