9/30 Homework

The location I chose for my second project is called Dumbo. The name of this location comes from the acronym “District Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”. On September 25th, I decided to take a well needed walk around my campus. I started by walking out of Namm Hall and started walking up Jay Street. I walked bass Tillary St and continued walking. Along the way, I saw the entrance to the Midway Building and as I continued walked I arrived in front of the Voorhees Building. Around this general area is where the Manhattan Bridge starts. I walked under the beginning of the bridge then walked under an overpass. The next thing I know, I was standing in from of a guide map that explained the area in which I just entered. It was Dumbo and it looked very interesting. It was a modern area where modern building architecture clashed with Old Brooklyn architecture. I would go more in depth but I’ll save that for the essay!

“You start building your private New York the first time you lay eyes on it”. – The Colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead
Even though I’ve been building my private New York since I arrived here back in ’00, I’ve still to explore thousands of areas around it!
Dumbo proves my case because I’ve never been to such area before. Usually, I’m use to being around houses and apt buildings but living right next to a bridge and the ocean water is something entirely new to me. This quote will be reflected in my writing in the sense that I’ll be describing some of the features that make Dumbo entirely new to me and how small windows of past Brooklyn accent the modern parts.

“Yet, as I came to understand the place where mentoring, criticism , and producing overlapped, I moved into the sphere more gracefully than I’d ever imagined”.- Fort Greene Dreams by Nelson George.
Dumbo is a mixture of a residential and commercial area. It has bars, clothing stores, an art gallery, a bank, event areas and other small stores. You can do a lot of activities in this area so it would come to no surprise that a lot of age groups over lap in this area. In my essay, I’ll be writing how this location has changed from a manufacturing district to a habitable area.

Speech Class Summary 9-25-13

In speech class on 9-25-13 we discussed chapter 5. Chapter 5 was about what things to do before your speech and why the audience should listen to you. The few things that u should do before a speech is called The Audience Factor. This includes that you should know little about the demographics, socioeconomic status, and the culture background of the audience. Also you should think why the audience should listen to you like do they want to be there, whats in it for them and how to make them listen to you. The other thing we learned was to know about the place you are going to give your speech. If you follow this and do little bit of work before your speech, than you will be ready for the speech

Walk In New York

I have been living here in New York for about 10 years now. The best walk that i have had is with my family to the amusement park at still will ave, now called the The Luna Park. We walked on the boardwalk to the park and it took us about 30 mins to get there. it was a really good summer night with family. I was about 10 at that time and it was really new for me. All the lights and all the Rides i had never seen that kind of park before anywhere in New York. The thing that stood our for me was really all the rides, the weather, the location, and the most important thing was i was with my whole family. We went there around 10 at night. Me,my siblings, and my cousins were just running around and having the fun. We than also walked on the sand and walked barefoot in the water by the beach. It was really nice to enjoy the weather and also the moon light on the water was really beautiful. That moment was really special because i was having the fun of my life. The beach, the sand, the wind and my family. We walked walk back home on the sand barefoot and than ate ice cream on the boardwalk as well. Those moments were really good and precious for me as what was really the last time that my whole family was there, my cousins and everybody else. That was the walk of my life so far for me.

A Walk in New York

I have been in New York for about three years and Brooklyn for one. I like to walk and never really had the chance because where I lived previously, you needed a car to go anywhere. Once I moved here i decided to take advantage of the opportunity. I took many walks and enjoyed them all, long and short. i walked along the Hudson River park on the westside, the entire length of Central Park, and from the South Street Seaport to Battery Park. Most recently, I walked the Brooklyn Bridge. I started in Brooklyn and went to Manhattan. The first thing I noticed is that there is very fluent traffic on the path in the center of the bridge. Both pedestrians and bikers. There were a lot of tourists, as well as people just out on their daily jog. The sun was shining and there was a delightful breeze. This moment sticks out to me especially because I was walking with my soon-to-be girlfriend. i decided to take the extra step to go up on the side of the walkway for a better view and it was worth it. You could see all the boats in the water and beautiful clouds in the sky. Even more mesmerizing was the traffic going in both directions on either side of me. This is a sight that most will never experience considering how dangerous it would be to be in the middle of opposite flowing traffic at that speed. It wasn’t until i reached the middle that I realized it wasn’t the end and that it was much longer than i anticipated, although I didn’t mind. I look forward to having many more walks in Brooklyn that impact me like this one did.

Cumulative summary for “City Limits”

In the essay “City Limits”, written by Colson Whitehead, New York is described and presented in a different way than we’re accustomed to. He explains that everyone has their own New York and it all starts with your first experience there and what you visually take in. In his opinion, being in New York makes living any other place inferior. No matter what changes and is gone, it’s still alive through what you saw New York as when it was significant to you. People’s stories entice you to make the first move to come here but once you’re here, everything’s irrelevant because you only know for sure what your own experiences are. You need to remember and cherish what you see because when it isn’t there anymore, you don’t want to forget what you learned and did in those places.

English class summery 09-15-13

Today we went over the second page of City limits by Colson Whitehead focusing on the hidden meaning of his words and which ones he chose to use. Several decisions were stated based on the responses to what was implied in the piece and why they were important. one of those was at what time did  Colson Whitehead write this piece due to his reference of the checkered cab and disposable cameras. several vocabulary words came up also such as matinee and incredulous. At the end of class we looked over the Bloomberg Years presentation and all that has changed in and around New York City.

This are images of the taxi cab in the film The Fifth Element in 1997 which stared Bruce Willis as the driver. the last image is a comparison of a real checkered cab and the futuristic move version.

A Walk in New York

“New York is the city that never sleeps” i never understood this quote until i witnessed walking NYC in daylight and night. New York is the only place where you see people walking all over the place they’re either running to work, trying to catch the bus or train before it leaves, or just trying to get home.

i remember one night i came out early out work around 1am, so i decided to go to 42nd street Times Square one of the most places that New Yorkers know. When i arrived there all i saw was the big beautiful bright lights everywhere! Times Square looks so amazing at night nothing compared in the daylight. I love going to Times Square at night now, just watching the lights glowing in the dark night sky is so incredible! I was surprised that there were still so many people walking around, running, bumping into people etc, like if it was during the day. That when i understood that NYC never sleeps because there’s always people walking around, the people is what keeps NYC so alive!

A Walk In New York

I was born in New York but I left at the age of about 5-6 to Florida so I didn’t really remember anything. A few years later I came back to visit New York and was amazed by how different a place could look. I was not used to buildings being more than 3 floors high and when I came here there were no building less than 2 levels high, it was crazy to me that I’d have to turn my head to see one whole building. It wasn’t only the buildings,  I also remember a disticnt garbage smell that I have forever associated with this city, I feel like there is no fresh air anywhere due to all the cars and factories in such a tiny area. Also the atmosphere was weird, there was so much graffiti everywhere and nothing looked clean, and the people here looked so much meaner. The streets were 10 times smaller than what I was used to and we’d hit a traffic light every 100 feet or so. However the city felt so raw and it made me feel alive in a way because of the authentic vibe that seemed to be ringing through every corner.

Walking New York

I’ve lived in Queens for pretty much my whole entire life. Out of all the long walks I’ve had, I will never forget my senior year prom night. A bunch of friends and I decided not to go to prom because we didn’t have any interest for the once in a life time special event. Since it was one of my friends birthday, we decided to go to the city that night without planning anything at all. We ended up in St. Marks entering a pizza shop called 2 bros. It was the best dollar slice pizza I’ve ate in a while. After that we just wondered around for three hours, and amazed at the amount of people out at 3am. I didn’t know why i was surprised, but I enjoyed the feeling of being outside in the city so late with my friends and these random people. Once we left Manhattan and got back to Queens, and went to Steinway in Astoria. We played pool and then ate from one of those mobile carts outside the streets. What I noticed that morning was that there was a huge difference walking in Manhattan streets versus walking in Queens streets. In Manhattan there were many stores open where you could hang out. Plus the huge amount of people in Manhattan  made me feel more alive then the streets in Queens. Queens at 4am is like a ghost town, which made the vibe dead. That’s when it came to me. The saying “New York City is the City that never sleeps”.

walking in New York City

I always think New York has many personalities, sometime he is very noisy and sometime he is so quiet. When I walking on the street in Chinatown after school, I think New York is so active. People are rushing on their ways to lunch, chatting on the street corner with their friends, gossip everything on the neighborhood and few workers are on their way to deliver the goods. Lively New York is not created by the people only; there are very important thing that make New York more like New York——-subways. Whenever I walk through, under the Manhattan Bridge, the noise produce by the trains were loud enough covers my voice, and my music in my earphone.

After the sunset, the dark came and there are less and less people walking on the street. Most of the stores are closed and the whole street became much darker. When I look up the sky, I can see the bright moon among the darkness; and sometime I was lucky, I can see the airplanes fight though the sky, with the weak, little spot light. When I was in China, my hometown calls “no night city” there are always light come from the stores and people still shopping on the streets or walking after dinner. For me, walking in Chinatown at night was so lonely.
