Poject 1

Hi my name is Obediah, I’m a freshman here at City Tech so this is as new to me as it is for any of you. I graduated from DeWitt Clinton high school in Bronx, New York.  My nickname is Obie for those of you that don’t like or have trouble pronouncing my name. I’m not that active, you may know that if you know me and if you’ve seen my physique. But I LOVE basketball and football, watching and sometimes playing. On my free time I like to play video games like NBA 2K and Call of Duty. If you get to know me you will find out I have a good sense of humor (I’d like to think so) and I can be a very fun person, but I do have my flaws (as everybody else). One out of three of my life passions is to become a sports analyst. Whenever I watch sports (basketball and football) I find myself knowing a lot about what’s going on and I feel that my insight on the game is something everybody should know. My second life passion is to become a game designer one of the reasons I came to City Tech. My other passion is to become a computer engineer and my reason for that is because my Xbox 360 broke and I’m determined to learn how to fix it.

My avatar is a quote, “Tell the truth and making someone cry is better than telling a lie and making someone smile” and I chose this for a specific reason. It caught my eye because it reminded of the moment when I told my best friend I didn’t think she was beautiful because she asked for my honest opinion. In conclusion to that LONG story, I chose that quote as my avatar because I feel the truth is always the right way to go.

Someone may interpret my avatar differently by thinking they can get anything out me. What I mean by that is people think just because I say I’m an honest person they can ask very personal or inappropriate questions and I’ll answer them. That is not true, I answer what I feel is appropriate and if I don’t answer that means your question was too personal or I just didn’t feel like revealing that truth. That is where most people get me wrong, if pleading the fifth amendment in a life or death situation will guarantee me life I will do it.

My profile will tell people that I prefer to be honest rather than dishonest. My reason behind that is because I feel that the truth always catches up to you in life. One lie can change how a people see you more importantly how you see yourself. When you lose yourself as person you start to question yourself more and that could be bad mentally. Also, that my major department is Computer Engineering Technology. At this point I don’t know what my major will be, but I thought I’d just go along with something that interest me.

Fort Greene

The passage “Fort Greene Dreams” is about the personal life and rise to success of mufti-talented Nelson George and how his moving to Fort Greene changed his life. He talks about the area he grew up in and how it began with a phone call from director Spike Lee. He talked about how growing up in Brooklyn as a kid was nothing like it was living in Fort Greene. He was even robbed while living there and that’s when he figured things would be different from where he grew up. However ironically enough he had much success after his move. He wrote five books at 19 Willoughby including his involvement in movies like “The Death of Rhythm and Blues” and “Shes gotta have it”. He is very passionate about what he loves to do and said he would “drown” in all his accomplishments of work. To Nelson, it is not about him being with all these famous people but to see the area of Brooklyn flourishing with so much success and artistic culture.  Throughout this time as well he met many famous people and got his name known quick. Slowly Nelson became a mentor to all up and coming artists, film makers etc. That were on the rise. He even wrote and produced his own screenplays. Yet as much as his career was taking off, he still kept it simple by getting takeout and going to his favorite restaurants. Due to his small mistake though to this day he still mourns the loss of his personalized soul train jacket was stolen while signing for a Fed-ex package. That was the least memorable moment of him in Fort Greene but one thing he did love was working with so many up and coming artists as well as other young talents. He believed in making an impact in the entertainment business and doing what he loved.

Fort Greene Dreams

In Fort Greene Dreams, Nelson George looks back on how his life played out. He begins his story by telling us he started living in an apartment located in Jamaica, Queens then moved to Fort Greene in 1985. He grew up around Fort Greene because of shopping with his mom and had heard about the bad areas and gangs that used to inhabit Fort Greene but he says it was easy to love. He gave a good amount of detail describing his apartment which he loved because he was tired of living in beatdown apartments. George was able to afford this because of a quick bio he wrote on the pop king Michael Jackson which became a best seller, one of his first real sucesses that gave him a great deal of money. In this apartment he wrote 5 books, including his breakthrough work, The Death of Rhythm and Blues. He also invested in movies including She’s Gotta Have It while writing and producing screenplays. Being in this new empty apartment it filled him with ambition due to all the inspiring talent that he could critique. He seemed to be living in an area surrounded by iconic people and this was all on his way to get something to eat. George worked in his apartment and dispite how bad of a reputation Fort Greene had he had never ran into any trouble except getting robbed which had been his own fault, this place had been a rebirth because he found himself in a new way. He learned what kind of writer, lover, and son he was and where mentoring, criticism, and producing overlapped in the process of living in Fort Greene.
