Title: Race: The Power of an Illusion
What is race? Is it being brown, white, yellow, black or is race a virtual concept we have adopted throughout the centuries as the film “Race: The Power of an Illusion” suggests. According to the video race is nothing more than an illusion we have of ourselves or how we want to perceive people that share similar physical characteristics. Many people will agree that being in a group with similar characteristics such as skin, hair or eye color would make them feel more comfortable and believe that their similarities go deeper than just skin deep, but there are all kinds of variation among people not necessarily between two different races. For example, two random Mexicans can be just as different as a Mexican and a Korean. The film makes good use of DNA sampling to illustrate this concept. It also shows the close similarities that two persons may have in common even when these two persons are on opposite sides of the world. The main message which the video tries to deliver is how the superficial characteristics on a person are what the naked eye uses to classify people into race categories; but essentially there’s only one race and that’s the human race.
