Whiskey Wars

As I was reading the article “Whiskey Wars”, I could just imagine “Vinegar Hill” resembling that of the Wild West; minus the cobblestone, cacti and thimbleweeds . I think the Wild West is a rather perfect example considering that in the Wild West there are nothing but saloons’ and barrels of beer all over the place. I thought this article was rather interesting because some of what was mention can easily relate to the things that go on in our economy, such as corruption and taxation. The politicians are corrupted while the government continues to not only raise taxes on alcohol but on all our necessities.

Reflection of Brooklyn

since i am from queens i didn’t know much about brooklyn. after reading this article i got to know there are so many historical place in brooklyn. one of the most unknown place was to me vinegar hills. Even though i went to this neighborhood few times while i was visiting Dumbo, i still had no idea about the name of the place. i also found out in these article Dumbo was an acronym for “Down under the Manhattan bridge overpass”.its  amazing how a neighborhood in this city can have such history behind it.

Brooklyn is an interesting place, with a rich history a stunning locale. I learned that Brooklyn has gone through some dramatic changes throughout the years.  I am interested to learn about different indicators of change in Brooklyn, and too see if there are relationships between them. I am new to the Brooklyn area, so most of the information I learn is very new.   I didn’t even know that a place like “Vinegar Hill” even existed.

Reflection: Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn, Downtown Brooklyn & Dumbo

When “Vinegar Hill” was first mentioned I honestly had no clue as to what or where. However after reading the article do I now know that “Vinegar Hill” and “Brooklyn Heights” are practically neighbors. Although this was my first time ever hearing about “Vinegar Hill”, I actually thought it was quite interesting for two reasons; the first being that it’s literally within walking distant from the college and the second being that “Vinegar Hill” was rather an affordable place to live back then. Vinegar hill just like in any other of the five boroughs has in more ways then one gone under huge mass construction.  Mass construction has forced modernization into neighborhoods therefore causing the price level of housing to increase. Brooklyn as well as the other 4 boroughs are very much diverse. However Brooklyn houses the most diverse; set of people. In all four boroughs mentioned modernization has greatly affected our neighborhoods in a positive as well as negative aspect. Through modernization jobs are created; however due to modernization we are in many ways forced to forget what once was and move on to something new.  In today society high rises are being built left and right and in the process it blocks our sunlight from shining through, could you imagine high rises in place of house; one word darkness.

Brooklyn Wikipedia Reflection

While reading the wikipedia articles I found many interesting facts. One thing that really stood out to me was that Brooklyn is the most populated borough. You would think Manhattan would be but Brooklyn consists of about 2,621,793 people while Manhattan consists of about 1,636,268. I also loved reading about Vinegar Hill and finding the different boundaries that were sold to different settlers. It was very interesting to read due to the familiarity of the boundaries. It was also interesting to learn the previous names of the now familiar places such as Rinnegokonk is now the Wallabout Bay. I also found that DUMBO is “Brooklyn’s most expensive neighborhood, as well as New York City’s fourth richest community overall.” The wikipedia articles were well written and understood but definitely still need to be fact checked.
