Read and React#5-safety and health

In my Human Resource Management class, one of our topic is safety and health. We learn a law which is called Occupational Safety and Health Act, the main function of this act is to set standards to ensure safe and healthful working conditions and provide stiff penalties for violators. While I read the article “Questions and Answers about Health Care Workers and the Americans with Disabilities Act”, I realize that health and safety is a very big and important part for employment. This article talks about both health care and ADA law, discuss when health care workers are employees under the ADA and give some examples to demonstrate the topics, such as reasonable accommodations, workers’ compensation, direct threat to safety and legal enforcement, etc.

I know Disney has health plan and employees get paid just because they are health. That means company would like to see their employees’ health, it is very important for them to work. However, I also know several people can’t work because of health. I have two roommates who leave because of health issue. Betty’s foot got hurt before she came to Disney. Her role is a housekeeper but she can’t stand more than an hour. So she stops her training as a housekeeper and waits Disney to offer her another job. However, she gets terminated after a month waiting because Disney can’t find any good job for her! She leaves the next day and we all feel sorry to her. My roommate Myra who fell down during her work hurts her back. Her spine is painful and she needs surgery, therefore she decides to self-terminated and go home 20 days earlier than her expire day.

As a housekeeper, one of my co-worker, Ping, he hurts his right hand by using the housekeeping car. The car loses the control and moves fast, his hand is big so he can’t pull out his hand immediately from the car. After this accident, he can’t work as a housekeeper for two weeks, and I feel so sorry to him. Different from the injuried, I know some people who work with disabilities. I meet an AM housekeeper she can’t talk and listen and she communicate with people by sign language. She is a kind of employee with disability, but she still works hard and perfectly, I was shocked when the first I saw her, and I can’t believe she works in housekeeping such a long time! But right now I understand her and admire her.

Nothing is impossible, but we still need to keep ourselves health and safety. From these experiences, I notice that health is the key and base part in our life. We should keep us healthy to work, to study, to take care of family and even to travel around the world.

I totally agree with your response. I also took the human resources class and became inform on so many laws, rules and clause that protect the employees. That being said being healthy make the world go around. I came here feeling great and with in the first weeks of my program I began to experience the worst pain that I have felt in years. I found out my wisdom teeth were coming out and had a severe infection that if left untreated was going to cause damage to the rest of my mouth and body. This infection gave me fevers, headaches, body aches and so much more. It made it so hard to progress or do anything at times. This company takes care of its employees because the believe that the people are what makes the park what they are. They invest millions in training to ensure that the job is being done right. That’s why we have safety messages of the weeks in all breakouts thought the roles. Safe D begins with me and in truth it does. I feel for your friends because I have seen it and is so unfortunate. In reality any job cause an injury but its up to us to do it right and report anything
    unsafe.
