Read and React #5

While attending my Organizational Leadership class, I have been introduced to various different types of leadership methods. The one I found to be the most interesting was the Toyota Production System (TPS). This leadership method originated from the Toyota car company. Each employees are empowered to stop production at any time they find a problem during production. So not only does the managers have power, but so does each employee as well. By following this method, Toyota hoped to eliminate the production of waste and to also make products just-in-time.

An article by Rooney, Michael J., who published an article called “Toyota System Production Meets Large Scale Change: A Synergy for Sustainable Improvements” during the Summer of 2005 described how he had executed the TPS on a group of students who was in the process of working on a plant production. In the beginning, none of the students felt the leadership would be effective. It was too time consuming and students didn’t think their work would be done on time. As it proceeded to the next day, the students had a change of mind and each one of them started coming up with new and brighter ideas. This type of leadership had been proven effective for them and produced great results in various categories such as leadership, communication, ownership and etc.
