The Undergraduate Research Mixer brings together students interested in conducting research and faculty mentors interested mentoring student researchers. Save the date to join the mixer, meet others and talk about undergraduate research, and learn more about research opportunities at City Tech and beyond.

The New York City Nature Challenge, hosted by Macaulay Honors College and sponsored by ConEd, is part of a global campaign to bring together nature lovers of all ages in the greenspaces of their communities to record examples of urban wildlife with smartphones.
Throughout April 26-29, public parks, preservation societies, gardens and other natural organizations around New York City’s five boroughs will host City Nature Challenge events that are open to all. Participants will be guided by Macaulay student volunteers to catalog their images using the iNaturalist smartphone app.
After observation days have ended, the iNaturalist community will help properly identify and catalog the species in a marathon tech session. and results will be publicly available.
Citizen science demonstrates that science is for everyone and can be done by anyone. Participating in scientific efforts helps to improve science literacy for all. City Nature Challenge contributes to our understanding of urban wildlife in New York City and the planet as a whole.

12/5 7-9p – Existential Medicine #2: Augmented Humanity – Free – New Lab, Brooklyn Navy Yard
“In part two [of Existential Medicine], we unpack Augmented Humanity and the human body as a connected device. Underscoring the importance of emotional intelligence, we ask: how can this technology build upon the most powerful humanistic attributes that differentiate us from machines? The evening will explore the future of surgical robotics, connected implants, and what augmentations mean for human performance, the body, and medicine.”
SUBMERGE’s mission is to inspire audiences of all ages by educating them on marine science and ecosystem health. Volunteers will help run the Welcome Tent, Discovery Lab, Photo Booth, Information Tent and other activities going on throughout the day. Other activities for children include experiments, live scuba dive shows, catch & release fishing and many other sources of entertainment. This is a great opportunity for you to help your community and help the public learn more about New York City’s coastal waters.
Over 18 years old, at least a 3 hour time commitment.
There are two volunteer sessions available. The morning session will run from 10:00am-1:30pm, the afternoon session will go from 1:30pm-5:00pm.
T-shirt, Morning snacks, and coffee will be provided, along with a lunch for all volunteers.
Please submit a request through NYC Service to attend and we will follow up wtih more details if space is available.

Many members of the City Tech community haven’t been on campus since the end of the Spring 2018 semester. If that includes you, that means you have yet to see the Undergraduate Research exhibit at the library. Be sure to stop and learn more about undergraduate research at City Tech at the exhibit on the 4th floor of the Library building (formerly the Atrium building).
The exhibit is the work of several inspiring City Tech students, as well as faculty and staff from the Library, the Honors and Undergraduate Research Scholars Poster Presentation Session, the Faculty Commons, the Office of the Provost, the Director of Undergraduate Research, and the Undergraduate Research Committee.

In both the paved and green spaces of our city, many species survive and thrive. We’re asking all New Yorkers – residents, visitors, commuters, students, teachers, pedestrians, park lovers, parents, children, EVERYONE – to become citizen scientists and help us make as many iNaturalist observations as we can. Will you join us in this citizen science quest to catalog our city’s great biodiversity?

How can you get started? It’s easy! Download the iNaturalist app to your mobile device. During the time from April 27-30, use the app to upload photos of organisms to the iNaturalist and the iNaturalist community will help you identify them. It’s as simple as that!
The OpenLab is an open-source, digital platform designed to support teaching and learning at City Tech (New York City College of Technology), and to promote student and faculty engagement in the intellectual and social life of the college community.
