Reading Response 1 – OSB

After reading Armstrong Helen, I do notice similarities between Avant-Garde movements of the past and today. I would also say there has to be a correlation because today’s Avant-Garde needs the past for reference. I believe in everything being nuanced and reference points. Without Avant-Garde breaking the barriers of what is and becoming an innovative way to express art, then there would be many other artists that we see today. Avant Garde experimented with art and design which progressed over time into pioneers of the movement. It brings about new notions of thought, structure, form and unorthodox design that separates the idea from society. One similarity of Avant Garde that first comes to mind is designer Colm Dillane aka KidSuper. Recently, KidSuper was appointed to collaborate with High Fashion brand Louis Vuitton to design their FW 2023 collection.

Colm Dillane aka KidSuper is a streetwear designer and owner of the brand KidSuper. For him to be brought into a LVMH scene and bring his taste to the High Fashion world is nothing but inspiring. For a very long time people like Colm and others have been fighting to get respected in the High Fashion world. As a result, it wasn’t until this day and age where those streetwear pioneers have gotten a seat at the table. Designers like Colm are the culture. He is the NYC kid who chilled in Soho and linked up with other kids like him. He was the kid who used recycled and sustainable fabric to make clothing. He was that kid who’s shop started in a little garage on Canal. Colm Dillane emphasizes those key things in his designs. Color, curiosity, pattern and more importantly in my opinion, new age contemporary art.

Throughout the book, there were 3 terms that have been stated the most; Authorship, Universality and Social Responsibility. Authorship is letting it be known that you are the creator behind the art. Social Responsibility is taking initiative and action in a particular situation that benefits society. Lastly, Universality is being true to a community and sharing to people in the world.

For Avant Garde, the future of this movement will continue to flourish and evolve. As years go by, more and more artists present different forms of individuality. Seeing yourself through the art that you make. My only concern about the future of Avant Garde is the people who are in these corporations and higher places not giving Avant Garde artists the opportunities. Sometimes it has to take one person to become courageous and expose the truths for others to change. Avant Garde will always stand out and be ingrained into art and there is no going away from it.
