On September 25, I emailed my available days to Mey. I have figured that Mondays and Fridays are good days for me because it doesn’t collide with my other activities. So I am hoping I will be working those days at WSM. Quite a few days had passed since I emailed Mey, and I haven’t had a reply yet. I was a bit worried because the next day I had my internship class.

During the class, I become aware that most of my classmates have already found an internship. Half of them talked about their experience at their internship. I felt pleased to hear their anecdotes, however the more I hear them, the more concerned I became. I wasn’t sure what to respond if I was asked about my internship. At the end of the class I was overwhelm with many thoughts. I found myself asking many questions. Do I still have time to complete my hours? If I did have time how much time will it take to go for a different internship? Is it better to drop this class and take it the next semester? Should I wait for Mey’s reply? On my way home, I begin to discard negative thoughts. Instead, a powerful thought grew inside me. It was too late to quit now, if I was to quit, I should have done a long time ago. I have continued; I don’t have to be great to start, but I have to start to be great.

Thursday September 24 was the day of my interview. I woke up early to go over some articles that have good tips when presenting my work to someone. My interview was planned to be at 6pm, however Mey contact me to change the time to 5pm. Although I didn’t have any inconvenience changing my interview time, I was somewhat worry if I could make it on time, since I had a meeting with my senior project professor at 3:30 pm. Therefore I decided that if I arrive early at my first meeting I wouldn’t have any problem with time, and that’s exactly what I did. I arrived 10 minutes early to my 3:30 meeting. I didn’t wait much since my professor was available at the moment. He went over my progress on my senior project and also my print portfolio that I was holding. He told that my portfolio was clean and presentable. He concluded the meeting by saying to continue advancing with my project and he wishes me good luck at my interview.

At the end of my meeting I notice that professor Mason was at his office, thus I decided to tell to him. It was a great decision that I made. Professor Mason gave me good ideas in how to improve my portfolio; he corrected me in some spelling errors and the layout of my portfolio. He also stated that I had a clean portfolio. After hearing this I felt less nervous and more confident.

With no delays, I arrived at my interview on time, and soon I was introduction myself to Mey. She looked at my portfolio and told me “this is what we are looking for.” She later adds, that the job was more about creating layout and typography work. Later she asked me what days I am available. I couldn’t answer at the time but I suggested that I would email her those days I am available, and she agreed with me. I conclude the meeting by saying thank you for your time. I got to say it was somewhat easy, but I don’t regret reading those articles or talking with my professors. It was a good idea in preparing for this interview.

I couple of days passed, and I received an email from Christian. He briefly said hi, and asked me to send him my resume and my work sample. Without no delayed, I replied him with my documents attached in an email. The next day he was able to connect me with a company called Walter Schupfer Management. I was very excited to hear from them. Christian has told me to send my work, and my interest to Brittany who works at WSM. After I emailed her my resume and portfolio, she looped me with Mey Bulucek who runs the art department. Soon I was setting up an interview with her inn the next few days.

During this time I started to do some research about how to prepare me for an interview. I read couple of articles that provide with great tips for design interview success. In one of their tips they says to present your work with a great passion. In other words, we shouldn’t be modest when showing our work, if we have spent weeks on a project, we must present it in a confident and a positive way. Since this is my first interview, reading this article has help me get an idea how to prepare myself before meeting with Mey.

During my second week I took some time to fix my resume and set up my sample portfolio for a specific job description I was aiming for. I wanted to intern in a place that does editorial work. Therefore, in my digital portfolio I included couple of my magazine covers and layouts that I have done in the past. Once I finish this step, I showed it to some of my designer friends for feedback. I was able to obtain great information in how to improve my presentation; also they told me some good tips when sending my work through email.

I felt motivated and confident about my work; however, I have never applied for an intern job before. I felt somewhat lost when I was scanning the list of internship, professor Mason have provided me. A few days passed without looking at this sheet again, yet I knew that I have to act fast and take advantage for this opportunity.

One day at work, I meet an interesting guy whose mane was Christian and established an exiting conversation with him. As we were exchange Ideas he asked me what do I do. I confidently told him about my passion of becoming a graphic designer, and my aspiration I getting a job as an intern. We share common interest as he turns out to be an owner of a leather company where they design handmade bags. At the end of our conversation he asked for an email, because he knew some people who might be looking for interns. I gratefully hand him my business card, and said to him it was nice meeting you.

Last Friday, I met scott who is my supervisor. I showed basic structure of “big production” web-site. Even though I have basic structure of website, he really liked it. However I have some issues. First of all, home page image which is given by scott is not enough big to use home page image. If it is showed in big monitor, it’s gonna be pixelated. Second he didn’t give me any information about the company and client list. I can’t fill out the sections. Last, he didn’t send me advertising, e-commerce,product shots, editorial and events pictures. Pictures are really important because it is production company. It is based on photograph. I asked that again. After we had meeting, I asked evaluation of internship. I am finished 120 hours but I will finish this web-site. Unfortunately, I couldn’t have any experience of culture or environment of office, but I learn a lot such as working with someone who is higher position and responsibility.

Fifteenth Entry: December 8th Nearing my final hours in my internship and it’s quite exciting. I’m happy to have been a part of a wonderful and committed group of people looking to really help a company move forward and get better everyday. It’s no surprise that they’ve chosen that as the tagline on Twitter or even their e-mail accounts, because it’s so fitting. I had to ask for approval to use certain Flyers and Ads for my presentation tomorrow. They’ve wanted me to be fairly quiet with company details as it can lead to unwanted misinformation. Most of my Power-Point will consist of my experience working there and detailing the Creative and Economical process that occurs in the office. I’ve learned that a lot of design must meet certain requirements when being showcased to the public. I have just about 3 more meeting left to complete the amount of hours needed for class, however I may be continuing my partnership with Marketing team into February since we’ve made so much progress and I’d hate to not be apart of it. After checking in with Mr. Mcphoy, I’m currently at 111 Hours. I always talk to him about schoolwork, so he’s rooting for me to come out on top. Kevin had been extremely supportive in giving me ideas on my Senior Project and Interactive Advertising class. Although he claims he isn’t that artistic, he makes very good judgment call when it comes to design.

December 2, Today I will be working on making a logo spread the for the logos I did for Lisa a few weeks back. It is a mind numbing task that is not easy to do when you are lacking sleep. At first I bunch up the logos too much. About twenty per page, to many to be viewed by themselves so I decreased the number of logos per page by ten. I had some difficulty putting the longer worded logos on the same page so I had to decreased the size of most of the logos by ten or twenty percent. Within a few hours I was done and there wasn’t much left to do. While grouping the college’s logos it made me realize how subconsciously I really do dislike working with logos. Whether it comes to designing them or dealing with them as a whole. I just can not wrap my head around it. It is a weakness that I must get over even if I am only interested in web design and web development. I have three more days left until my internship is done and I can honestly say that I am still not to keen on the design field and if you are not happy doing a job then most likely it is going to suck. But, hey, I am simply going by what a co-worker continually mentions when he comes into a work. Then again it might just be the fact that he’s working with C.U.N.Y., who knows.

One more week, and the semester will be over.  I was happy to take this class and to get an internship.  It will be a precious experience what I learned from this internship.

I was happy to work with Maggie@MPGraphic Design. I learned a lot of things from her.  One thing that I want to mention is how to deal with clients.  She showed me step by step to how to deal with the client before she designs a logo.  She gave me some questions to ask about the clients.  For example, what is the favor color that the client like?  What is favor typeface the client prefer? Etc… I know it is very important to communicate with the clients.

The first thing, I need to do is sketch.  Sketching is very helpful.  The more sketching I do, the more ideas will come out.  Sketching can help me to come up with new ideas and concepts so that I can solve design problems.  I have learned a lot of things, except how to create a logo and to deal with the clients.  She also gave me the opportunity to learn and improve my skill with Photoshop.  After these on hundred and twenty hours, I feel that I have improved with this software.

This is my first time I got experience working with a co-worker.  This internship was the right place for me to gain experience and to have confidence in getting a job in the future.  Overall, this internship was helpful and improved my skills and I will be keep sketching in my work.

Usually, people say that if you are happy you feel time passing very quickly and want to keep that happy time as long as possible. If not, then the time passes very slowly.I have that same feeling at this moment. I really feel this semester is difficult for me the go through. It seems every minute and every second is even longer.

It is because this semester is not going smooth. Every project that I try to do the best, the result is the same as I thought. It seems my mind stops and I do not have a good ideas. Maybe, I am too tired. Studying and working this semester is too much for me.

I have a two day part time job at an accounting field. My friends told me that I should resign my current job and focus on my studies. It is better for me, I can spend more time on my classes, and I can graduate early. Then, I can find a full time job after graduation. However, it is not what I want. I want to keep my job, even though I am working two days. I still get some money. Therefore, I can pay the tuition by myself and have some money to spend on my daily activities.

No matter how hard it is, I cannot give up.  Sometimes, I feel frustrated with my studies. Then, I tell myself I would be good. In addition, when I wake up next day, I feel better. I can continue to go on with my journey.

Huseyin Akis – Blog Entry # 15 (Self-Evaluation)

I’ve fulfilled my hours at City Tech Image & Visual Communications. It was my last day today. City Tech Image & Visual Communications was the right place for me to intern. It’s great my supervisor Mr. Vargas took me as an intern. He gave me the opportunity to learn, and to improve my skills in logo design, camera raw, masking and Photoshop. This was my first time to experience, working in an office with co-workers.

Working here has taught me, how to interact and communicate with co-workers. As an adult with special needs, it’s very important to communicate with people. There are times I need help from my co-workers. They helped me unpack and put on my jacket. My time here has motivated me to be less afraid of trying different things.

When a project took a while to complete. I happily continued working and figuring out ways to make my designs better. Timing is everything… I mean everything. Creating logos usually takes time. There is a lot of figuring out to do, which means constantly sketching and making comps. I constantly kept sketching, even during the comp stage. We sometimes take sketching for granted, but sketching happens to be more flexible, compared to working in Illustrator. Sketching allows us to try new things and let’s us conceptualize and solve problems.

If somebody offered me a job, I would take it because working here has boasted up my confidence. This internship was the right door I took to gain experience.
