Joey- Documentation

So far shown in class was a couple of how to videos and I decided to go on the same route.  The video link below is a documentation showing the viewers on how to be a ninja.  In the beginning of the video it shows why one might want to become a ninja with the boy getting bully and asking if he was tired of getting bullied.  The point of the video is clearly comical use but it does go about in steps on how to become a ninja.  The video shows step wise what needs to be done and also demonstrates the actions.  At the end of the video it also shows a demonstration on how the steps should look like.  I viewed this video almost 5 years ago and was the first thing to come to mind when asked to do this blog post. Hope you enjoy it.

In classes I have taken before writing a research paper has been hard especially when it comes to finding good quality research.  Throughout this class many techniques of finding research have been given to us in order to find it.  Some of the things I have already used in order to find different research for different classes but finding research for my topic has been very difficult.  I thought it would be a breeze because of the studies we did to find research but as I learned more the research found wasn’t good enough and I really didn’t think it would be this time consuming.

While reading Badke I gained a bettwr understanding about databases and search engines.  The most important thing I learned is when searching for research remember to be precise on what your using to search.  The more detail you are with what you search the better the answers.  Badke gives an example of “rock” the term rock could be a solid object but also be used in the sense of rocking a chair.  Being general in a search would make your life harder in finiding the perfect information needed for your research.  Badke also provided websites that are great databases but given that the cuny library also has a great collection of databases for almost every type of research I find it better.

Videos like a fairy tale use was great way to explain copy right laws.  The video is fun to watch but at times was difficult to listen, being that every word was read by different characters voices.  The video talked about that when something is copy righted we couldnt use it for our own benefit.  In the case they used disney characters to show how every movie made was copy righted and others couldnt use it to enhance or rewrite like walt disney did for most of his movies.  Something can be copy righted to death, then 70 years after.  This has become a huge problem in our culture,  this stops many new artist to be limited and not use the art that inspire them.  The law was to maintain money for the owner when in reality most used copy righted work except back then things would stop being copy righted after 25 years.  People need to realize that being greedy is affecting new artist and making it very difficult on them.

Modern social media sites are constantly changing ever since I could remember.  When MySpace was the place to be I remember people complaining about privacy, they didn’t want there comments to show or let people see their pictures.  People figured a way to do through the means of either MySpace giving them the option or just customizing their profiles.  Facebook was started for college students but it expanded and drew in a big crowd.  At first no one seem to have a problem but after a while people want new things and find things to complain about.  When using a social media site there is not much privacy and if you don’t want people to see certain things then certain things shouldn’t be posted.  Facebook is constantly changing and making it able to privatise your profile as you please giving you the option to choose who sees what.  People always seem to find something to complain to change things yet when change happens it becomes an outbreak.

In the world of today with modern technology plagiarism has become easy to do and also easy to catch.  Since I could remember when ever I had a papers due all my teachers/professors would emphasize on plagiarism.  I think its laziness that makes students plagiarize, its not difficult to quote somebody and put it in your own words.  I feel by quoting you show where the idea came from and giving it credit, I also think that quoting is a great way to expand your paper.  When I did my 10 page research paper I used quotes to help me reach 10 pages without them its safe to say I wouldn’t have finished.  Using quotes is never a bad idea especially if you could plagiarize from it, it just shows how much it talks about your topic but instead of trying to steal it use it and your paper would just be that much longer.  Always think positive and do the right thing.

Homework #5- Joey

The common crafts video on social media was a great way to explain the idea of social media through example. This video was easy to see and very short, it showed how social media has its big corporation and small markets.  It also explained how every market had there on share of distribution which is the same in social media, every blog or website gets there own share of views and people see their opinions.  Also showed how every person has a say in that they could express what they thought about while they read the blog or newspaper website. The article  “Linked Data gives people power” showed how in the internet people could help others in many ways, it could be just by comments or rating.  It told us how citizens helped make a map of dangerous bike routes just by putting in reports of where accidents have occur to help future cyclist.

While reading Pavliks “Producers of Digital Media” I learned how media had changed over time and the meanings behind it.  It helped me recognized how involved the public is in todays media.  It gave examples of how phones are were used to record some important evidence and how mostly it was random citizens.  The reading also talks about newspaper were privately owned before and now changing to be publicly owned for the sake of having business because people like having a say in todays media.  This is why most media have adopted to having online distribution and consumption, in order to let the public to have discussions by the means of blogging.

Hw 2

After reading John Pavlik “New Technology and the Media: An Uneasy Alliance” i was informed about the history of the advancements of technology.  How it helped the media change and enhanced it.  It talks about the invention of the electromagnetic telegraph developed from the daguerrotype, which was an early form of photography.  Having a newspaper with images made it easier to understand certain events it made it easier to read because you had an image to help you understand.  With the invention of the WWW it has changed the media again, now the news can be read almost anywhere from your phone or tablet to the giant screens of time square.  All news are being read before its even published on newspaper and with technology every day people could comment and share their point of views.  With the inventions of wikis like Wikipedia not only could people share their thoughts but could also correct the information.  With technology advancing its important for the media to stay on top of it and use it to their advantages.

While reading Research strategies by William Badke it has taught me about the foundation of information and the uses. In chapter one Badke discusses how throughout history information must be expressed and taught for future generation. He talked about how even a simple thing like what plants are edible could help future generation be more secure on what they could eat. Badke also disgust the transformation of the way information is processed, from simply preaching to the printing press to now the www. In chapter eight Badke explains of the pros and cons of the www and how to use it properly. He let’s us know what should be use in a research paper and how to obtain it while giving us ways to use it. Badke also explains the danger of plagiarism and how easy it is to do it and catch it with modern technology.
