Response

Both of the reading Graphic Design Theory and Design as Art, although written by different artists, share a commonality within what they’re thinking. Both writings discuss and makes us theorize what and why as designers.

In our lives design and culture plays a unappreciated, overlooked role. The reasoning behind this answer is due to the fact that a majority of the world are surrounded by visuals that they’re disregarded. For instance, the packaging and design on foods we eat, most people are so focused on what they need and overlooks the efforts that was put into the visuals and logo on that packaging that draws their attention. Everywhere we look and all the visuals we see are ideas that a designers took the time to create and understand their target audience to effectively promote whats needed.

The two writers raises questions that some, if not many artist have asked ourselves when we thing of design and artistry. Simple thoughts such as “I wonder” or “why does” can spark a community of people who then shares the same “I wonder”. This then creates curiosity as to what the answer to those questions are, and we as humans like to question the unknown to find an answer that will satisfy our desire to understand. This way of thinking also can also be said about designers and why they concern themselves with unsolvable theoretical questions, but with a twist. Designers think creatively and see the world differently than others. They think in principals of visual appeal, feelings and the message being conveyed. We as designers like to understand and question unsolvable theories because we see it as an art form. Unsolvable theories raises question in our heads such as how could I express or attempt to explain what I predict into a visual to be analyzed.

As a designer we often think about what problems we have to face within the field. there are many answers to this question, but my response to this question is relevance. In this business field art is constantly changing. At one point in time paintings were seen as the most valuable works or art, until technology became more relevant within our lives, In which we now see digital art as all the rage. Staying relevant as an artist is a difficult task to adjust to. I understand that everyone has their preferred styles and wouldn’t change a thing. But for those who rely on their art to make a living, must adjust to what the market is responding to in order to stay relevant with the changing tides.
