The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen

For my interpretation of “The Little Mermaid” as a vampire, I’m blending the classic fairy tale with elements of Gothic horror and dark fantasy. Instead of a mermaid, the protagonist is a vampire princess who longs to experience human life and love. The underwater kingdom becomes a haunting, gothic underwater castle, and the prince she falls in love with is a mortal with a fascination for the supernatural.

In this retelling, the vampire princess, Ligeia, is drawn to the surface world by the allure of human emotions and experiences. She saves the prince from a shipwreck and bargains with a sea witch to become human, but the transformation comes with a terrible price. As she navigates the complexities of human life, she must also confront the darkness within herself and the dangers that come with her newfound mortality.

The characters include Ligeia, the vampire princess, who is both alluring and haunting, the mortal prince who is both fascinated and fearful of the supernatural, and the sea witch, a sinister figure who grants Ligeia’s wish at a great cost. The setting is a blend of the eerie underwater castle and the mysterious, fog-shrouded human world. This proposed book would appeal to fans of dark fantasy, gothic romance, and paranormal fiction, targeting a young adult and adult demographic.
