80s Design is Alive, Well, and Living in 2019” by Nadja Sayej, published in PRINT, March 6, 2019

Bringing the 80′ use of collage into today’s society looks different. The principles of collage and mixed media have been used today through social media and commercials. Social media has made it easier to form colleges. With the ability to mix motion, sound, music, type and animation we have brought back to use of colleges.  The use of self-publishing photocopies/ zine aids in giving voices to communities who were not well represented in mainstream media has evolved from the new technology we have today.  With the ability to self publish, coming together allows like minded people to gather together and make a new voice for the community who are underrepresented.  For example starting a type foundry that could represent diverse experiences in typographic form.  Change happens with the start of an idea and decision to make a difference.  Being discouraged due to failure and not because it’s your “failure” but the disconformity to the controlled is no longer accepted.  Self publishing has shown we are not failures, we view and express our views differently then what they believe to be the norm.  With the resurfacing of the 80’ its influence of the new technology transcends it to a style that has feeling and emotion. When you view these artwork it seems as if it makes you want to do the call to action its displaying.  These techniques give freedom to express diversity and explore new aesthetics freely.
