During the winter break I decided to get a head start on my search for an internship. I found a bunch of companies that seemed like they would be great to work at, but nothing really stood out to me. After looking through countless Craigslist posts, I decided to apply to Tribe Bicycle Company, a Brooklyn based bicycle manufacturer.

I learned about the company back in September when they first arrived in New York. After seeing their awesome logo, I was immediately interested in working for the company. I did some research on the company and I saw that they were accepting applications for graphic designers. I decided to wait until I worked on my portfolio before applying, and I’m really glad that I did. I figured I should contact them regarding an internship position first to get my foot in the door. After applying and touching base with one of the owners, I landed an interview.

Working in the cycling industry for the past seven years as a manager for a local bike shop gave me a great advantage. I was really excited to find out that they’re still learning the ropes of the cycling industry, and I can bring my experience to the table. They are still a relatively new company, so there are a lot of projects that need to be done. I’m really excited to work with Tribe and I can’t wait to help them grow as a company.

Last week I did not have my internship because I haven’t started yet. Not exactly sure what to post on here. Only thing I’ve done last week is go to my current job as a cashier, and actually did lots of homework. I didn’t have this class last week, but I did have my Art of Asia class so I went to that class. After class I wanted to be prepared for my first day at my internship, I decided to buy some professional clothing so I can be dressed for success.

Monday February 9 at 2 pm I start my internship with New York App Designer in Brooklyn New York, the company designs and creates mobile websites and apps for small business. Well the first week is more of an orientation, getting to meet my supervisor in person for the first. I’ll be able to sit down with Mr. Khalidi Lawson getting to know more about him and also come up with a schedule that will work well with my current job and my classes. My position will be a designer and I may code using HTML 5. I am so excited to start working at my internship, also a little nervous. Even though I’m not 100% confident in my ability in graphic design however I know I have to start somewhere. I know I can do this and expand my horizons past web design and learn new skills abilities. What I want to get out of this internship is real word experience, advance my designing skills and have a fantastic portfolio and resume.

I am currently doing my internship at a company called East Coast MMA Fight Shop. They specialize is selling outside equipment as well as creating there own martial arts themed apparel. The in-house work which includes designing tees/sweatshirts/hats are all done by the owner of the shop. He does not have much design experience so thats where I come in; I will be helping him design and will also be taking product shots of the apparel. This includes organizing shoots and reaching out to models for scheduling. I’m really excited about this internship because the company is the only one of its kind in the east coast and has so much potential to grow and develop its own graphics department in which I can possibly have the opportunity to become an art director of sorts. I can definitely see myself working there even after the internship class because the ambiance of the shop is very modern and laid back which is perfect for me. I do feel at times that I’m missing out on the work load and experience I can get from a bigger company but for now I believe this shop will do.

I started looking for internships the day after our first class, unfortunately I don’t have an internship set just yet. I’ve found many interesting places that require things I know I can provide. My only fear is that I don’t have much experience (other than my school work) in the field. Therefore I don’t have much to say about anything design related on my resume. My hopes are that they still seem interested and give me a chance to show that I can be a great help to their team. I hope to work/intern at an advertising place  because that is what I’m most interested in. I expect it to be fun and educational, I’m looking forward to it.
