The first reaction I had when I read Liddy’s article about search engines was that I was mind blown. I had an idea that how a search engine works would be complicated but I had no idea that there were so many steps revolving around this process. One aspect that I greatly wanted to touch on was the “stop words”. Stop words is a step that pretty much eliminates and negates common words like “the” and “is”. This step is really important because without this, someone can have a much harder time to search what they really want because these words would cause interference.

I agree with you Charles. I could not believe how many steps are involved in a simple search. I had no idea how complex it is. In seconds search engine pick the important words to provide pages of different websites related to the search. When it comes to stop words, I normally try the leave those words out. But, there are times when I do add them I find what I’m looking for at ease.
I also agree with you charles, the search engine seems so basic but really there is so much more to it. So many steps are involved in getting us to the best search when half the time it does not even bring us to the right material. Stop words are what I found most interesting within this topic. Before reading the article I also did not know that there is such a thing as stop words. I previously thought search engines take every word into account. The article was also a bit confusing considering how many steps are involved in finding a search. This also left me realizing that, doing research is not simple. It is probably best to specify what your looking for and it has deffinitely taught me to eliminate stop words when doing a search to result in a more, simplified accurate search
Hey Charles, remember in our IMT1101 class where doctor Choi made us do the Google assignment? Remember where she vaguely touched upon what builds a search engine with terms like crawler and what not? This reading reminds me of that but only it had way more depth except it neglects to explain the page rank and crawler. The stop word concept is a relatively new concept for me also actually I didn’t know about any of those kinds of things you can pull off in search engines so donβt beat yourself up about it too much. Itβs something I myself will be using like starting today.
