Homework #1

I like this photo by Adam Pretty. He successfully captured the moment of action when the swimmer spreading his arms, and the movement of his arms created an illusion of a bird spreading the wings. The splashes of water continued in a very organic way the movement of the hands and created a shape of the heart. The photographer masterfully framed the photo so nothing distracts from the strong swimmer, committed to sport and success. The viewer’s eye is caught by the contrast in color where dark is a background of water opposed to the light foreground with white splashes of water and highlights of the swimmer’s hands. The angle of the photo is very appealing and deliberate – the bird’s eye view.

HW # 1 – Jim Richardson

Thunderstorm and lightning bearing down on a ranch in the Sandhills of Nebraska

Sandhills Lightning

The photograph above was taken by National Geographic Magazine’s Jim Richardson. What attracted me most about this image were all the colors. There is a horizontal gradient happening because of the lightening. On the left is this indigo color and it gets lighter and lighter as you look to the right. You can also see some green in the grass and the color of the porch is this bright green-blue color. The best part is that you can see all these colors in the photo despite it being night time. Additionally, Richardson uses the pillars to frame the lightening and has a nice diagonal line that cuts through the image.

Homework #1

Photographer’s Website: https://thomasheaton.co.uk

I was drawn to this photo because I love the sea. I how beautiful and deadly it can be and this image captures the beauty and power of the ocean by showing the waves crashing on the rocks. The sky and water make it seem like its going to rain which elevates the mood. The mountains the back give the picture a lot of depth which I also enjoy.

Homework 1

Joey Lawrence: Unknown Subway Passenger on Halloween Weekend

I am now a Joey Lawrence fan. I appreciate how this photo seems to be frozen in time. There is a great use of framing with the window of the train. All eyes are on the skull causing the leading lines effect and setting the mood for the image. Figure to Ground gives this image a great contrast, making the skull without a doubt the subject of this photo. This photo caught my eye not only because of it’s beautiful composition but also because I personally love shooting during Halloween, it makes for some interesting photos.

Assignment #1

COMD3330 – Photo 2

  • The photographer captured movement, contrast, depth, foreground and fill the frame.

  • Symmetry from the droplets surround the swimmer, the symmetry also makes the subject show in the shape of a Y.

  • Centering of the model, drawing the eye to the subject.

  • The pointed direction of the fingers/hands creations movement for the water pushed behind the subject.

HW 1

This photo by Adam Pretty is appealing to me because it tells a story and also is interesting to look at. The contrast between light and dark and the added color of blue and red make the skier separate from the stark white in the building. The use of framing is also visually appealing. The rule of thirds makes it an interesting photo to look at instead of having the skier in the center, it is pushed to the bottom third and left of the composition.

Homework 01

Livio Lacurre (http://www.liviolacurre.it/fotografo-matrimoni-trentino-alto-adige-sposarsi-sulle-dolomiti/)

I like Livio Lacurre work, because the style of his photographs is more natural and through his photos he conveys more emotions since he captures what is happening at the moment and does not focus on having perfect poses or having the perfect angle.  Also in his photographs he is always further away from everything that makes you appreciate more what is happening.  I also see that he likes to photograph through things or behind people making the photo have more contrast between the background and the foreground.

The photo I picked was #13, Davina and Daniel’s photography. I like this photo because I am a big fan of candid photography. Capturing people when they don’t realize it gives off a more natural feeling to a photo which I like. The expressions on everyone’s faces are fascinating to take in. The three bridesmaids are showing 3 separate emotions but you can still tell all three are happy for the bride. I also find the arrangement of the photo particular interesting to look at.  The angle at which everyone is framed leads the eye to the subject of the photo which is the bride. The bride is also in focus compared to the bridesmaids who are out of focus so she stands out more.
