Reflection #1 First day of class

After the first day of class, I’ve learned a few things. First, when interacting with clients you can explain design principles if it helps you explain why you made certain design decisions for a project. Second, when showing your portfolio for an interview, make sure they see your best work first, and your second best work last. This is one of many things we discussed and learned on the first day of class. I think having these discussions are incredibly helpful because it allows us to learn from others who may have more experience in things we may or may have gone through.

Another thing we discussed is the importance of doodling, and how doodling helps with thinking, and how doodling should be accepted in schools because its schools that are often against the idea of doodling. Though I do agree that doodling help with thinking, there are many examples in my life where doodling has helped with many projects.

Aside from doodling, we were talking about the many art movements throughout the 19th and 20th century and how it not only influence the graphic design, it influences many advertisements and companies. For example, companies like Apple are using the style “Swiss international” in their advertising to this very day.

Having these discussions are great because not only do you learn things that you may or may not have known but they can definitely make you start thinking about things that you have not taken into consideration. Someone asked the question; is it better to work as a freelance graphic designer, or to work for a design agency? This is a question that has been on my mind for quite a while mainly because I’m not opposed to doing both. Unfortunately, this question was not answered but when it comes up again, I’m sure the discussion will be very interesting.

Lastly, the reason why these discussions are important because they give students the opportunity to asked questions, and it’s something that students don’t get the opportunity to do because we have to focus on the project and/or assignment. Getting the opportunity to ask questions and to hear from others is great and it will assist us in being better graphic designers.

Illustration Project: The Story

700473

The story I will be using for the illustration project is “A Scandal in Bohemia” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is part of his Sherlock Holmes series. The things I will change is the title, setting, time period and characters. My version of the story will be called “A Scandal in Bulgaria”, It will take place in 1980s New York City, and instead of  Sherlock Holmes being an English man, he will be an African american and instead of Irene Adler being an american, she will be Russian, and the prince instead of being German, he will be Bulgarian.

Working Process for Illustration Project

I’m also working on getting better at drawing the female anatomy by looking at references and also looking at art books that specify that area.

My experience at the Cooper Hewitt Museum

My visit at the Cooper Hewitt museum was an exciting and unexpected experience. I was excited to see a museum solely based on design and not fine art, unexpected because when I walked through the door they gave a wand and told me that I can save the work I like and look at them through the museum website. I’ve never heard of anything like this and while going around the museum looking at the illustrations, graphic designs, and industrial designs, it was amazing. I enjoyed being there and a lot of work I liked there were propaganda illustrations and minimalist graphic designs.93568_d12e5c52530304f6_b 90437_486ea1a7ba7d294a_b 80942_a148c80f44b7fbf5_b 94784_960c86f9bfbd4c2d_b 93581_3171be0da5ea544a_b Poster, Ayunda! Thoughts on “La Vie en Rose” U supermarket

After watching this commercial I have to say that it was brilliant to use the sound of babies to recreate the song “La vie on rose” and it was effective because throughout the commercial there were moments where you feel as though you’re listening to the song just in the sound of babies and it was also effective because they used the different type of cries to fit the keys of instruments and it worked well. Another thing, it was effective because it went with the flow/transition of the song and it didn’t sound broken at all. It was a smooth transition.

Field Trip Thoughts

While I did not have the opportunity to go to the Ralph Steadman  exhibition a the society of illustrators but I have to say looking at  his work through the website makes me upset that I did not have the chance. His line work and his use of ink is truly eye catching I would say what caught my attention was his illustration of the movie fear and loathing in Las Vegas because I loved watching that movie when I was younger even though I did not know what was going on at the time.
