A Musician from the 369th Regiment Marching Band, 1977

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 2.59.24 PM
“A Musician from the 369th Regiment Marching Band, 1977,” was taken by Dawoud Bey, which is part of the Harlem, USA collection.  When I first came across this image, it gave me a hint of sublime. I’ve traveled many times, and it automatically reminded me of New Orleans.  The man in this image may not have the same background story as the people I met at New Orleans, but this image was taken in the late 70’s, only a decade after segregation was over.  The was a marching band playing, “When The Saint Go Marching In,” and I went up to talk to him, and we talked about the amount of devastation there were and how playing music for the people is what most do because it helps them escape from what they’re going through at the moment.
Dawoud Bey’s use of line really helps the viewer’s concentration be on the man’s face. This image contains a line gesture, in which the  eye is mainly attracted to the trumpet, it is at a slight angle that allows the eye to move upward toward the musician’s face. This photograph doesn’t have much of a frame, but rather a setting that hints at urban area in New York due to the graffiti on his left side.  The only patterns in this photograph, again are in the background, created by the bricks of the building and the blinds in the window of the building behind the elderly man. Everything In the image is in focus, meaning the photograph is composed with a deep depth of field; personally I feel it benefits us because it informs us of the setting the musician is in, which adds to his story. The lights in the photograph are mostly in his face, creating highlights on his nose and cheeks, which allow a glowing feel to his mood. The photograph is taken almost at a eye level, rather than a worm’s point of view and bird’s eye view. This allows the viewer to feel as if they’re in the particular setting with the subject of the photograph, almost like you are part of the story.

Boardwalk on Mini Cooper, Oct 2013

Looking at this photo of Far Rockaway,Queens boardwalk on a mini cooper is devastating. One of the reasons why I chose this photo is because I’m from the Rockaways so this photo impacts me a lot. This image shows how severe hurricane sandy impacted the Rockaways whereas the hurricane demolished the boardwalk and many homes. I will consider the mood of this photo as sad and tragic because it’s heart-breaking to see how a hurricane destroyed part of our city. I know a few friends who lost their loved ones and are now homeless. Luckily my mom has an apartment in a building where the water didn’t go up so high. Far Rockaways is currently using generators until everything is fully recovered. I guess being surrounding by water has its pros and cons.

Referring to the term line and pattern the photographer use line and pattern in the houses captured in this photo as well as the lines in the boardwalk. The color (Red) of the mini cooper makes viewers focus on it more than anything else in this photo at first. Having houses on both sides of the photo resembles framing because it centers the boardwalk on the cooper as well. Other objects are brighter with color such as tan, white and light grey. From the sand leading to underneath the boardwalk I was able to identify the contrast from light to dark. The Angle of view from this photo show that this was captured from eye-level and from personal experience and knowledge, I was able to determine that the photographer Susannah Ray took this photo with her back towards the beach where the boardwalk originally was and she was standing in the middle of the street. All of these elements show that the mood of this photograph is terrifying and sad due to the destruction shown in this photo and also the boardwalk being on top of the mini cooper  symbolizes how strong the hurricane was.

Cours la Reine, Michael Kenna

The local photographer I choose is Michael Kenna. Michael Kenna was born in Widnes, England in 1953, his passion for the arts led him to study painting and then photography. Kenna often photographs at dawn or in the dark hours of night.  Kenna’s prints have been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout the world (Joseph Bellows Gallery – Michael Kenna – Biography). This photograph is called Cours la Reine, Paris, France, 1987 from the Paris, France 1984-2011 Collection. Cours la Reine is a public park and garden promenade located along the River Seine and it’s one of the oldest parks in Paris, created in 1616 by Queen Marie de Medicis in Paris (Cours-la-Reine). The mood of the photograph is vibrant and illuminating like the dawn of a new day or light at the end of a tunnel.

In this stunning photograph depth of field is in deep focus. The black and white contrast seems to cover the entire grey scale from all the shades of light to dark. Also, the vantage point in this photograph seems to be from what appears to have been taken from a low centered position. Lines that are present are that of the trees which are vertical, meanwhile the paths short wall  creates a thick line, that guides our eyes as it recedes into to distant vanishing point. The trees do a wonderful job of framing the pathway making the path in the distance the primary focus. It manages to make this open-space feel optimistic all while it appears inviting. Although the picture is in black-and-white it has a feel of vibrancy. Its mysteriousness appears to draw you in with curiosity and hope.

I enjoyed looking through Michael Kenna’s site and found his work very impressive. It was difficult to narrow down to which photograph that I liked the best.

Safdar Jang, Study 1 Delhi, India 2006

f473406

The title of the photograph is “Safdar Jang, Study 1 Delhi, India 2006”.  It taken by Michael Kenna in India.  Delhi is a metropolitan region in India.  It is the world’s second most populous city and the largest city in India.  It is a very beautiful black and white image.  The mood of this photograph convey a feeling to me is calm and peaceful.  When I see this photograph, I really want to take a trip to go there to take a look.

In the photograph, we can see the building of Delhi.  Kenna uses the technique of line, pattern, shadow, contrast of light and dark, and balance in this photograph.  He uses two diagonal lines that get closer together.  These two lines create a sense of depth and distance.  These two diagonal lines lead my eye into the photograph.  Line is one of the most important photographic elements.  It draws the viewer’s eye into the image and gives a photograph a sense of depth and distance.  We also see the technique of repetition in this photo.  The entrances of the building which repeat and create a pattern.  The pattern creates a horizontal line on the bottom and it creates the illusion that the repetition is infinite.  Patterns bring a sense of visual rhythm and harmony to photographs.  In this image, we see the shadow of the building.  It is a very clear and a sharp shadow.  The shadows also guided the viewer’s attention.  In my opinion, shadow is the most powerful when used in black and white photograph.  The contrast of the light and dark is in this image can also gives viewer’s attention.  The visual elements show in this image evenly.  It is a symmetrical balance.

This is a very beautiful photograph and the objects which appears most clearly focused in a photograph.  I really like it.

Emire State Building by Michael Kenna.

Empire State Building, Study 1, New York City, USA, 1978. By Michael Kenna.

Michael Kenna, a black and white landscape photographer, caught my attention with his minimalistic and mystical style. This particular image is one of my favorites. He has captured one of New York’s most famous landmarks, the Empire State Building in all its pride and glory. Kenna makes me feel small and he makes me experience the pulse of the city with this photograph.

This image is photographed from a low angle looking up on the building, I think, from this angle, he captures its greatness, and makes the viewer feel small in comparison. The framing of this photograph seem to be well thought through, he decided to crop the two darker buildings on either side to create a focal point – it forces you to look towards the middle. Kenna also decided to flip the picture so that the buildings are in a diagonal direction instead of vertical. To me, this seem to create a sense of upward striving and movement. In a way, he is grouping these objects together and this is creating a sense of proximity, the choice of doing so leads to a creation of line. Architecture design are often examples of patterns and lines, but Kenna is using the lines in between the buildings, the negative space, to enhance the lines of the Empire State Building and the movement in the image. However, from what I can see, there is no clear pattern on this image, except for the repetition on the buildings. Kenna is working with high contrast on many of his photographs, the buildings on the sides are very dark in comparison to the Empire State Building which is light grey. This too makes your eye go more towards the middle, the lighter part of the image. Depth of field is irrelevant in this image, the whole image is in focus.

Overall, I like Kenna’s style because I think that sometimes less is more and he seems to keep it simple. I also like his way of making landscape photography interesting in a minimalistic way.

Brooklyn Bridge, Study 4, New York City, USA, 2000

Brooklyn Bridge, Study 4, New York City, USA, 2000

The Photo I choose that really spoke to me was “Brooklyn Bridge, Study 4, New York City, USA, 2000”

By Micheal Kenna. The photo is a photo taken in the year 2000 of the brooklyn bridge. it is an amazing black and white image of the iconic bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge looms majestically over New York City’s East River, linking the two boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Since 1883, its granite towers and steel cables have offered a safe and scenic passage to millions of commuters and tourists, trains and bicycles, pushcarts and cars. The mood in the Photograph by Mr Kenna to me is very mysterious with a hint of  dark feeling as if the end of the world was upon the bridge and it was falling because of the angle of the camera, But at the same time i feel the image with the white peeking through a feeling of hope and a new day and that everything is going to alright tomorrow.

Michael uses in this Photograph multiple element of photography and they are angle of view and Contrast of light and dark. Contrast in the Photography is very clear to the human eye, a high contrast image consists of mainly blacks and whites with very few grays. High contrast images such as this one michael can stark and dramatic creating the feel i was feeling as if it was the end of the world.  The Angle-of-view is the breadth of a subject as seen by a camera system. It usually is stated for the diagonal of the image, and sometimes the vertical and horizontal, but in the image we see now it definitely horizontal.  The view of angle is large which enables us see  a lot of amazing details.

Central Park Bench

1e94d54

Michael Kenna’s photograph”Central Park Bench”is one of my favorites among his New York City photogragh collection. When you first look at it you think its nothing more than a bench, but if you take a closer look at it again you’ll see that the photo is very detailed in certain areas. Its a simple approach , but very eye catching. When I look at this photo I feel very calm. The mood is set by the black and white tones and the lights that look like twinkling stars.Almost like a dream, which is why I find it to be such an interesting piece of art.The photographer only focuses on the front part of the bench and as it gets farther away from him its blurred along with the tree and lights. From the cameras vantage point I see that Michael was squatting next to the bench to get that straight line structure because the camera is aligned with the bench. He framed the bench just right only get a clear shot of the bench and the floor in front of him instead of the whole scenery.

There are uses of horizontal and vertical lines mainly from the bench and cemented pathway. The photo was taken at night time and contrast with the white of the street light and lightbulbs on the tree. The tree with light farthest from the camera seems to have no shadow, while the on a little past the camera seems to make a shadow on the floor. There also seems to be some light that touches the bench softly making me think that there is another tree with lights on it placed in front of the bench.Which could mean theres some sort of pattern with the trees being aligned in the park. Only certain trees seem to have lights not all. The cemented stones could also be a continuous pattern.

Michael’s other photo “fifth Avenue” caught my attention right away. It made me remember why people refer to New york city as the the city of lights. The photo displayed big skyscrapers and lots of lights. Thus showing the busy and energetic lifestyle of New york city.

Northeast Snow

preview

Here cars are buried in snow near Connecticut, where a storm hit in february 2013. The cars are parked in vertical lines, this fact, together with the massive amount of vehicles, creates a strong visual pattern.
