Brooklyn Bridge, Study 4, New York City, USA, 2000

The Photo I choose that really spoke to me was “Brooklyn Bridge, Study 4, New York City, USA, 2000”

By Micheal Kenna. The photo is a photo taken in the year 2000 of the brooklyn bridge. it is an amazing black and white image of the iconic bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge looms majestically over New York City’s East River, linking the two boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Since 1883, its granite towers and steel cables have offered a safe and scenic passage to millions of commuters and tourists, trains and bicycles, pushcarts and cars. The mood in the Photograph by Mr Kenna to me is very mysterious with a hint of  dark feeling as if the end of the world was upon the bridge and it was falling because of the angle of the camera, But at the same time i feel the image with the white peeking through a feeling of hope and a new day and that everything is going to alright tomorrow.

Michael uses in this Photograph multiple element of photography and they are angle of view and Contrast of light and dark. Contrast in the Photography is very clear to the human eye, a high contrast image consists of mainly blacks and whites with very few grays. High contrast images such as this one michael can stark and dramatic creating the feel i was feeling as if it was the end of the world.  The Angle-of-view is the breadth of a subject as seen by a camera system. It usually is stated for the diagonal of the image, and sometimes the vertical and horizontal, but in the image we see now it definitely horizontal.  The view of angle is large which enables us see  a lot of amazing details.

As you state, Kenna uses an oblique angle here and that really adds to the drama. You also use the term “new day.” Kenna does get up very early to shoot. This is literally the beginning of a new day. How else would he get such a vacant shot?
