“The Lottery” takes place in a small village of only about 300 living there. The day is June 27th and the lottery happens between the bank and the post office. The people in the town seem to treat the lottery as a very casual event. Most are having conversations amongst themselves while they wait for it to begin. Its clear that its treated as tradition but since its an old tradition and there is such a small amount of people it only takes about 2 hours. In some other places it was said to take up to 2 days. The calmness of all the villagers is very misleading when you finally read the ending of the story. The tradition of the lottery seems to be something that has been happening since the start of the village, the box they use is said to be stained, faded, and even some parts of it are breaking off to show the wood underneath. It’s also said the box has been used since before the oldest man in the village, Old man Warner, was born. Old man Warner hears of the people talking about how other places have abandoned the tradition, he is angered by this and says this leads to lack of order. The actual lottery happens with everyone taking a slip of paper from the box. The family who gets the correct slip of paper will then see who gets the piece of paper with a black dot. Tessie Hutchinson receives this piece of paper. Its then revealed the receiver of this paper slip is then stoned to death by the rest of the village. The title is misleading as it is a simple title that makes you think it could be about an actual lottery where something is won. I definitely did not expect the dark ending this story had when I first read the title. The title could be so simple and misleading to show how tradition is treated, to the villagers this is something plain and simple that happens every year.
