Discussion 2b: What is Design?

To me, design is when you are able to communicate a message or make a connection. The goal of a designer is to make a connection between the observer and the visuals. What constitutes good design? Interesting question because not everyone has the same taste and people have various styles, I’ve always believed that excellent design is subjective. But, with time, my perspective has altered since, for example, while designing, you want to hit a few pins. Good design increases readability delivers information quickly and efficiently, and directs the viewer’s attention to the message’s most significant content. The good design utilizes color, typography, and eye-catching and visually pleasing visuals to convey a variety of core visual ideas. What constitutes bad design? To be honest, what is called bad design is when the aspects of design are not followed. However, there are many other designers and artists that did not adhere to the design essentials, and their work is fantastic. So, when it comes to this question, It’s a 50/50 chance that the final bad design might be a beautiful and outstanding design that no one ever considers.

    Hi,

I think this is a very good response. Good design follow design techniques that we can see and appreciate but bad design is tricky because it relies on the viewer and everyone can have a different interpretation and also I noticed that sometimes when designers don’t follow rules, it has a positive impact.

Hello Andrew, I agree with you very much. In today’s society, many designers follow the design rules in order to survive. Such design will be liked by the public, but it is difficult to promote the progress of the design. On the contrary, some “bad” designs may develop and innovate the design, because they do not fully follow the rules, but use some new ideas and creativity. Although people can not accept such a design in a short time, if that design is “good” enough, it may eventually become a new mainstream and a new good design.
