Final Statement & Moodboard

The place I have decided to do my photo shoots/final project is called Caesar’s Bay. There are a couple of reasons I decided to go with this place, because not only is it next to a shopping center but an arrangement of activates next to it. For instance there is a sports center and a park within the bay. Although I like this final assignment to mainly focus on the bay and its people who come look across the ocean. People can be seen fishing, playing in the park, jogging along side the bay and some even riding family bikes or petal-powered go-karts. Overall just having a good time taking in the view and relaxing on the benches. Strangely a calm environment. Another key point of using this area is the view of the Verrazano Bridge connecting Brooklyn to Staten Island. Its a great spot for people to take pictures and hangout.

So since this is mainly focused on a bay, it would be a good idea to take morning picture when the sun is rising or midday as it casts the shadows across the bay. Similar to the Exposure lab in a sense and a good place to capture freezing motion which I was able to get for the assignment back then. I might even be lucky to capture a picture of the Verrazano Bridge during the night where the light cast into the water. Which would silhouette the people within the shot as its night. As well as focusing on light directions from that assignment, since the sun basically shoots its rays on the bay at all times. Showing of the environment which is like it’s own wholesome area where people gather to chill and watch the scenery.

Final Project Proposal

The Many Faces Of Central Park

For my final project I want to go to Central Park. This place is very unique and tells a story like no other. On the surface you may be wondering what could central park offer? “I’ve been there a billion times”. Central park has 2 faces one in the day and one in the night. This idea got inspired from our midterm project. The concept of showing the same place but in a different prospective would work so well in a place like central park. In the day time it’s populated with people doing unique things such as walking their dog, street preforming, dancing classes, festivals/ meetups, people playing sports, going on dates, enjoying the scenery and many more. In the night however its the complete opposite, it starts to look more bleak and dark almost all the people are gone and it starts to look like something out of a slasher film. I want to take photos in the day, night and evening to show the evolution of central park. I really want to show people why I Love this place so much, and even though you’ve been there a 1000 + you haven’t seen the true face of this park yet.

For my final project I would like to take portraits of a neighborhood. The neighborhood I would like to use for this assignment is the Upper East Side.  The reason for this is because that is where I am originally from and there are a lot of people who have a “old money” look to them that I would love to capture as well as I believe that the rest of the class will pick something different and I want to stand out. The Upper East Side has some amazing locations that I feel are overlooked by people that do not live there . Some locations I would like to take pictures in are Carl Schurz park, Lexington Candy Shop and along Central Park east among other locations. I am planning to take pictures of places  and people that make me feel back at my old home. Some of the assignments that I really enjoyed are the second week’s assignment where the class had to take pictures in their room/house and find objects to take pictures and use the definitions of what makes a great picture, frame within a frame and rule of thirds ect. This assignment was great because it made me think like a photographer for the first time. It really made me fall in love with the process of taking pictures and never really putting much thought into it before I was surprised how much I enjoyed the process. Another assignment that I enjoyed was the one where we had to take pictures and then a few days later take the same pictures. It really made me think about perspective and how pictures will change over time. It made me think of the impressionist painters and how they would create paintings at different times to get different results.

Final Project + Mood Board

Thinking back on the assignments we have completed over the last ten weeks, my favorite one was taking portraits. For my final project, I will compile ten people, varying from young to old. I will be using lighting and expression to convey a variety of moods.

The rawness of human faces is something that I have always found so beautiful to photograph, so I decided to combine that with some of the people I hold close to my heart. Using a blank white background, colored lights, natural lighting, and bright lamps, I want to convey many moods by having my models make different facial expressions. I want to use little to no props, making their facial features the main subject. Adding a hand or two can enhance the emotion I want to represent. The models will have free reign to do their hair and makeup however they want (if desired) but are told to wear a black T-shirt with no print.

I took into consideration my schedule and the access I have, which led me to decide to take the pictures in my house and use my family and friends as my models. I want to use a combination of different lighting, so I plan on shooting during the day while the sun is out and while the sun is setting to get warm-toned natural lighting. I also plan on shooting at night while using LED lights to make the room a different color and bright lamps to create a shadow.

For the shoot, I plan on using a DSLR camera and my phone to see which gives the best results. When using the camera, I will experiment with the ISO, the shutter speed, and the aperture to play with the lighting. The models will have their faces at different angles, such as front, 3/4, and side profiles, and I will also be moving around. Going closer to fill the frame, shooting right below the chest

Chelsea Neighborhood

For my final project I decided to photograph the neighborhood “Chelsea” in Manhattan, during the day and night scenes. I find this small neighborhood to be an interesting place to explore. You have the beautiful architecture in the little island by the pier, and it’s one of the most popular places to visit, walk around and be surrounded by different types of people. It’s a nature oasis mixed with a touch of innovative architecture designed by  Heatherwick Studio and the New York-based landscape architecture firm MNLA, led by Signe Nielsen, the park’s imaginative design offers all New Yorkers and visitors a new public space that is whimsical, captivating, and restorative. I’ve visited the little island, during summer and fall seasons and it’s one of my favorite places to hangout and relax while being in the city. Just around the corner, you’ll find Chelsea Market, a hub filled with diverse cuisines to try, from Italian to Asian foods. It’s one of the most popular places to visit for people who are foodies. I find Chelsea Market to be a historical neighborhood filled with beautiful classical architecture, and every single corner you walk through, you’ll find inspiration and beauty. I want to capture the beauty of the architecture in this neighborhood from the newest buildings that were recently constructed, to the oldest historical building in the neighborhood and showcase the culture and history of this neighborhood. The people that visit this neighborhood also add life to this place, because it’s one of the busiest places to be, you’ll find tourist visiting the neighborhood, to locals walking their dogs and Google employees walking to the offices in the neighborhood It is truly a fantastic place to visit because you’ll find all kinds of people here doing different things during the day and night. I would like to capture this as well in my photographs for my project as I explore this neighborhood and learn more from it.
