Weekly Journal #14

Personally, these last few weeks were not all that great but I’m doing much better now. I don’t think I’ve ever been this homesick and tired of mundane, stressful work but that is apart of the rollercoaster that has been this program. So a personal challenge has been keeping the magic alive and staying determined to not call out from work.

On the flipside, I’ve been feeling a lot more confident with my abilities at work, especially on cash register. I definitely enjoy it more than working in the shops. I’ve also gotten close to two leaders and a few coworkers and hopefully plan on staying connected with them.

I’m really glad there are nice, down to earth guests who stay at my resort location. I’ve had really good conversations and learned a lot about the places they’re from.

We’re getting a lot of first time guests and their big families for the holiday season. We’re also getting new CPs and part-timers.

Today I finally met up with Sam, Brittany and Gabby from City Tech. We’ve all been so busy so it was nice to hang with them again. 🙂

Hungry college students at Pollo Tropical

I’ve also been networking a lot more with hospitality majors. One of my leaders informed me that Jet Blue has their Flight Attendant training in Orlando and a coworker told me about a cruise line that seemed interesting.

I was not able to see every pavilion at Epcot for the Food and Wine Festival but I was surprised that they have a Festival of the Holidays. It’s really enjoyable. 🙂

Journal #7

This week has honestly been a great challenge for me. So many things have happened in the last week. One of our leaders named Cara has officially moved to Disney’s Hawaii location. I did not get to know her for very long but she was really sweet and helpful. Because our resort location has been low on staff, we have had a couple of EHH cp’s pick up shifts at our location and because we haven’t had enough trainers and leaders at our location, they haven’t been properly trained in closing. I have been working mornings all of this week which has been pleasant because i’ve had the rest of my days off; however, switching back to nights has posed a challenge in closing because there are so many things to do that you eventually forget something.

On Tuesday night, I had one of the toughest nights of all. The circumstances were: we had a shortage of CP’s, we had 4 Typhoon Lagoon recruits that were not trained in any of the stations, and we had a leader who mostly worked mornings doing a closing shift. Honestly, Tuesday night was a nightmare. Closing the bakery station takes a lot of effort and time as it is and should normally get done in the expand of three hours, but because I was alone on this station, I had to handle orders and clean up all at the same time. This posed as a major challenge especially because even though I have been working for two months now, I still struggle to get everything done on time even with the added help. On this particular night I felt so overwhelmed by the idea of closing this station by myself which made everything a lot more daunting. At about 15 minutes before closing, one of my coordinators comes up to me and asks me to help the people on Beverage Island close. I made her aware of the fact that I may not be able to considering I was already behind on my station but that I would try to help out as best as I could. It was 15 minutes after closing and I was washing down some my shoes when I watched my coordinator leave.

Since she asked me to help, I went to check up on Beverage Island and when I got there it was a complete disaster. Beverage Island has a lot tasks that need to get done. We have to stock everything, clean 8 soda machines, 2 cream machines, 4 coffee machines, 2 hot chocolate machines and deep clean the drainage. For this reason we are given 3- 4 hours to clean everything. When I got there, the EHH cps had barely started cleaning the soda machines. At this point in the night I wanted to just walk out and leave it to my leaders; unfortunately, I couldn’t do that. It was 12:50 am, I was supposed to clock out at 12:30; with no leaders or managers in sight, I had to take on the task of helping these cps close. It was honestly crazy. We ended up finishing at 1:30 am. Our bus did not show up at all. All in all, I got home at 2:40 in the morning. After this day it felt like I could do anything in the world. Honestly this scares me for the cp gap but im sure that I can get through it.

In the hospitality field, employee turnover is extremely high for many reasons, especially in food and beverage. Employee turnover can be a major challenge for the hospitality industry and therefore it’s significant for companies to reduce their turnover rate. In the article, Walsh and Taylor stated that “turnover was one of the main challenges to the hospitality industry and reported that turnover caused a significant loss in productivity due to the drain of experienced employees (Self and Dewald).”

There are many reasons people choose to self-term due to them at first having a positive mindset in the beginning and then once they encounter negative experiences with guests, their coworkers and leaders then they start to second guess everything. Before starting my Disney College Program, I already came in with a strong positive mindset and I was thrilled to work for a company that dreams really do become true and it’s one of the happiest places in the world. Within already having three months into my program I still attempt to keep a positive mindset no matter what negative experiences I have encountered. In my location, Port Orleans Riverside has been very interesting and challenging at the same time and still to this day it keeps me going with a smile on my face. Everyone I work within the mornings and at night treats me the same and I get along with everyone. They treat me with respect and I work well with everyone so far. When I first started CP’s, part-timers and full-timers that been in my location longer than I have told me, this job can be difficult and stressful at times, the people you work with make it more entertaining and worth it to be here. Although, they may encounter rude guests I’ve noticed everyone doesn’t allow that situation to affect their whole day or even their position. I was originally supposed to finish my program in January, but I decided to extend my program until July. Personally, I am over food and beverage and this experience has proved to me this will be the last time I encounter dealing with a food and beverage position. I am beyond grateful for this experience, but I rather experience a newer position with Disney instead which is merchandise. When the fall program is over I will miss the people, I gained my experience with, but I know I can’t stay in a position that my mind is already done with for a long period of time. I love to gain many new experiences with different people and learning about it.

Disney keeps the magic alive by having their cast members feel special by providing tremendous benefits for them and their families as well. Cast members can elevate and progress within the Disney company. Disney now helps cast members pay for their college tuition while working at the same time. Cast members who have stayed with the Disney company for many years appreciate everything they provide for them, even us CP’s that stay for a short period of time.

Staying positive and having high moral daily at any job can be a true struggle. I myself however have found so many ways with the Walt Disney Company in keeping it fun, and I find myself enjoying each and everyday I come to work. Being a part and employed by the Walt Disney Company is truly an amazing reward in its self. To have the ability to say to others that I work for “the Walt Disney Company” and have such a positive reaction, just shows the true high standards and reputation of the Company.

The Walt Disney Company has many repetitive roles that are performed by Cast Members. Wether it is working the same attraction each day, or preparing the same type of food each day, these roles are extremely vital to the success of the company. As Disney Management it is a major responsible to create a safe and positive work environment that allows their full time Cast Members to work their forty plus hours a week. A major way that Disney accomplishes this task is by making guests compliments a special and monotones occasion. Hearing positive feedback about job performance is a huge moral buster and encouragement tactic. Explored in the article “Why do employees stay? A Qualitative Exploration of Employee Tenure” by John T. Self and Ben Dewald, they heavily stress on the fact of giving employees incentive to stay as a huge turnover reducer for employers. Disney has many offers that continue to encourage Cast Members to strive and remain with the Company. These include monthly drawings for “4 Keys Cards” to win prizes, placing all guest compliments on a Cast Members “Record Card” for employment long documentation, and posting recognition in common areas for other Cast Members to see.

The Walt Disney Company is a very large and respected company that truly strives to make a difference all the way down to its front line employees. The dedication to that, is a clear example of The Walt Disney Company values. These values are a staple for its employees to continue employment and be a part of this prestigious company.

The article “Why do employees stay? A Qualitative Exploration of Employee Tenure” by John T. Self and Ben Dewald explore the various reasons for why employee turnover is so high in the hospitality management specifically in food and beverage. They wanted to explore and issue that is important in the industry and decided that the best way to draw conclusions would be to interview people who have managed to stay in a job for longer than a year. The different arguments for lowering the employee turnover include making job descriptions more realistic, hiring more mature people, and hiring people who have responsibilities, and or friends that work. The best way to lower employee turnover is by giving employees an incentive to stay and most of the times they come from external factors. The authors explain that if an employee has bills it pay, they are more likely to stay in the job in comparison to someone who has a job for fun. The argument that I agree with the most is that most of the times employees leave a job because they are “dissatisfaction with the job and relationships with supervisors.” For the most part, people are less likely to want to be in a place of hostility, therefore if they don’t get along with their coworkers, or they don’t feel a line of connection with their superiors, they are less likely to want to be in the job in the first place.

My initial Disney College Program was only supposed to last until January but I ended up extending my program until July. The reason why I was so keen on staying for a longer program was because of the work environment. While working at my location can tend to be difficult, because we are either closing or opening a shift which tends to be stressful, but the one thing that makes it all worth it is the people. When it comes to getting through a shift, I don’t think I would be able to if it weren’t for my coworkers. Whether it is having a casual conversation in the workroom, making plans outside of work, or making sure a station is cleaned up on time for closing, having people next to you going through the same thing is comforting. At the same time, having leaders who are understanding, are willing to help, and are easy to talk to makes everything more doable. It seems that the reason why people have stayed in Port Orleans French Quarters is because of the people. For the most part, everyone gets along pretty well, and because people work better with each other, they are more likely to get things done in an efficient manner. Personally, I prefer working at night because there are more CP’s and because we all want to get done at the same time, we constantly push to help each other out. That work dynamic is enjoyable. In my program, about half of the CP’s have extended which comes to show that something is being done well.

In terms of keeping the magic alive, I’ve noticed that disney makes a point of making cast members feel special. For part time workers, there are parties held that celebrate the amount of times cast workers have worked. They also make a point of celebrating birthdays and overall making people feel like individuals rather than just workers. Lastly, to add to the arguments made, financial responsibility is a huge reason for people staying in the company. When I speak to cast members who have been with the company for a while, they have mentioned wanting to buy a house or paying for college. This is one of the major reasons for people staying with disney. This is especially true now that the company is making a point of paying for college tuition for full time workers. Now cast members are willing to stay in the company and earn a degree at the same time. All in all, disney does a great job of keeping their cast members because they seem to care about their progression not only in the company but as individuals.

Why Do Employees Stay? Read and React 4

“Walsh and Taylor (2007) noted that turnover was one of the main challenges to the hospitality industry and reported that turnover caused a significant loss in productivity due to the drain of experienced employees (Self and Dewald).”

We had at least two CPs self term within a month at my location (rumor is going around that a third one is quitting) so I understand the messages this article was trying to convey. And after working here for four months, I can understand why CPs would self term.

I think reminding myself that at the end of the day this is still a job and I don’t want to give up inspires me to keep the magic alive. Before arriving to Disney World, I was under the impression that guests would be crazy and racist and rude but that hasn’t really been the case. A lot of guests at my resort are real down to earth and understanding and I’ve shared lots of laugh with some of them and that definitely helps keep the magic alive. Going to the parks as a guest and refreshing also helps keep my “magic” alive too. I think we have more CPs than full time permanent employees so I’m not sure how they feel about working here but I’m guessing most of them stay for the benefits and the relationships they have developed and even for financial reasons.

I do notice that leaders/coordinators will play music for CPs so that they can dance and relieve stress. Sometimes, culinary will leave out food for us at the end of the day. There are also housing events for CPSs and cast members get to take backstage tours of the parks. November 29th is our tour of the Festival of the Lion King at Animal Kingdom. And of course we’ll have cast appreciation efforts.

On page 69 of the article, it mentions how unrealistic job descriptions can cause harm to the employee-employer relationship (Self and Dewald). It took us CPs a while to accept that just because our schedule reads that we end work at 1:30am, it does not mean that we will actually go home at 1:30am.

I think working in Food and Beverage in general is not the most exciting but a Disney quick service restaurant definitely has something extra to it that is contagious.

Weekly Journal #13

I’m very happy that I’m leaving in two more months. Apart of me is surprised I made it this far but I’m definitely happy I did not give up. It’s not as busy as October but it’s still pretty busy at work.

I was finally able to make time to visit the parks again. It’s always nice to be at Epcot!

Germany at Epcot

Classes are going well. I’m almost done with a group project and classes end the beginning of next month. I am currently making plans to explore the city of Orlando and ride the hot air balloon at Disney Springs.

A recent challenge has been interacting with coworkers who might not always be on the same page. A lot of us are so tired and it’s definitely a challenge to keep up sometimes. I am not friends with everyone at work but I do work well with them. Honestly, right now I’m just excited to learn more about the Disney Cruise Line.

Here’s to another week ~

Week 10 was great! Nothing too interesting happened at work this week, but I can’t complain. We have been having roughly 800 check-ins per day, and at 99% occupancy, but it hasn’t been crazy busy. We have just been at a steady pace. Luckily, there are no conventions or sport tournaments this week, so we haven’t had to check in any groups either. It has been a very relaxing week at Pop Century!

Hollywood Studios with Gehang

Hollywood Studios with Gehang

This week, a fellow colleague from CityTech, Gehang came to visit! Although I was working at pretty inconvenient times, we made time to see each other anytime I was available. My work schedule was very inconvenient this week. Gabby & I took Gehang to Hollywood Studios, before I went to work, and Gabby took her to Epcot after I left. I’m glad she really got to experience everything.

The following day, Brittany and I took Gehang to “Ohana” for breakfast at the Polynesian Resort. It was SO DELICIOUS. There was unlimited mickey waffles, eggs, potato’s, ham, sausage, fruit, etc. I would DEFENITYELY come back to “Ohana” for breakfast. I have tried their dinner before, but the breakfast menu really blew my mind. Everything was delicious. Another great perk, is that we got to meet Mickey,  Pluto, Stitch, and Lilo at breakfast!

After “Ohana”, we gave Gehang a tour of the 7 Seas Lagoon on the monorail line. We explored the Polynesian Resort, Contemporary Resort, and the Grand Floridian Resort. She loved every bit of it! After giving her a tour, I had to head to work. So I dropped Gehang and Brittany off at Magic Kingdom for them play in the parks.
All in all, I had an amazing week! It was so nice seeing Gehang and spending time with her!

Weekly Journal #9

Week 9 was amazing! Working was quite rewarding this week. I had some pretty great guests, I can’t really complain.

One guest in particular stood out to me though. She was an older woman in her 60’s who was traveling with her husband, and their grandson. She looked like she was having trouble walking/standing on line so I took her aside and I checked her on an iPad so she can sit on the couch. Once sitting she somewhat broke down. I felt horrible and tried consoling her to see what the problem was. She then proceeded to tell me that her daughter recently passed from a drug overdose, so they decided to take their grandson on vacation to keep his mind off of things. She also told me that the father was never in his life, so they assumed they would be taking full custody of the little boy. They are from Canada, but the father is from America. When crossing the border into America, border control took all of their grandson’s papers and passport. Apparently his father requested custody and until it is all figured out, their grandson is now not allowed to go back to Canada with them after this trip. I felt SO BAD.

Disneyworld is a place to escape your troubles, not to add anymore. The woman was just so afraid what was going to happen after their vacation. Although there was nothing I can do about their situation, I could however ensure that they have an amazing start to their vacation. I surprised her with a specialized “Cars” magicband for the grandson, gave them fastpasses for the following day, and sent a big mickey plush to their room as a surprise later on in the day. I did not see the guest after that interaction, but I hope those extra little perks really helped jump-start their Disney vacation!

Besides working, I also had a great time in the parks this week!  Some friend from my last College Program came to visit, so we went to Epcot’s “Food and Wine Festival” so catch up! It was so nice seeing them!  I think they are planning to come visit again soon, so I’m going to try to give them my discount next time on their Disney resort.

Weekly Journal #8

Week 8 has been great! I finally got a few more “runner” shifts… which I was nervous about, but glad I had them.  I haven’t done any “running” since my training weeks ago, so I forgot a few things, but it wasn’t too bad.  Luckily there was always another castmember there to assist me if I had any questions.

This week I had a really sweet guest that stopped by the front desk every night, just say Hi and stop for a quick chat.  She would tell me about her day, show me pictures of her kids meeting their favorite characters, and ask to look at our pin board.  This guest truly touched my heart.  I loved seeing her come into the lobby at night with a big smile on her face ready to tell me about her amazing day at the parks.  On the last day, she send a long letter to the GM of my resort about me.  I wasn’t looking for any recognition, but after reading what she said it felt great! We had a real connection and I miss her dearly.  I hope her family got back to Chicago safely!

Besides working, I also made time to go the waterparks for little while it is still super warm out!  I went to Typhoon Lagoon.  There are two waterparks on Disney property: Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.  They are both open during the summer, but from fall to spring only one waterpark is open at a time so they the other can go down for refurbishment for the season. Typhoon Lagoon was so fun! I love it there.  It’s never too busy, and there is always more than enough chairs, so I never feel like I’m sitting right on top of strangers.

All in all, week 8 has been great! Looking forward to week 9!
