Karl Gerstner, Designing Programmes pg55-61, Joseph Muller-Brockman, “Grid and Design Philosophy” pg62-63 Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong; and Margaret Rhodes, The Swiss Designers Breaking Tradition.
Prompts:
- How does each of these designers/authors think you should approach design?
- Include an example of contemporary typography/layout that embodies the two design systems or philosophies described by Karl Gerstner and Joseph Muller-Brockman. And explain why!
- How do the contemporary Swiss designers describe in Margaret Rhodes’ essay “flirt with breaking the rules of the International Typographic Style”?
Respond:
I could not tell what designers/author want from me to approach from the design, many few designer/author have their own method and understanding of approaching their own designs. However, Karl Gerstner had a different approach that is logical and mathematical. Gerstner Philosophy of finding the solution to a problem is not to make critical decisions through feelings, but logical design.
Josef Muller found a different approach that is focus on grid like structure and organized designs. Muller Philosophy is more focus on the rule of third idea that there should be order in designing your own piece for the reading comprehension. Muller had developed a system call “The Typographical Grid” it’s a evenly space square grid units that guide the design work for more affective evenly space designs
Both Karl Gerstner & Josef Muller Philosophy are more focus on mathematical and logical approach that ignores abstract and creative approach in design.
