Research Paper 1: Your first paper should demonstrate an understanding of the theories of semiotics, models of communication, and the early avant-garde art movements covered in the classes leading up to the Research Paper assignment. Do you plan to complete the prerequisite class work prior to researching and writing your paper?*

Research Paper 2: Your second paper will critically examine a 19th or 20th-century print advertisement using Roland Barthes’ approach to visual rhetoric with references to Saussure, Peirce, and Hall’s theories.
