Madeleine Morley; Master László Moholy-Nagy Saw Photoshop Coming, 90 Years Ahead of Time (2019), AIGA Eye on Design, László Moholy-Nagy; Typophoto (1925): Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong on pages 32-34, Jan Tschichold, “The Principles of the New Typography” 1928: Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong on pages 35-38.

According to both authors talked about their aesthetic choices and beliefs, and they are different from the typography from the past. When László Moholy-Nagy was talking about typo-photo he was also talking about the way typography was previously used and the way that technology restricted designers but with the new advancements there were new ways to use type. The combination of printing photographs and types opened the doors for designers to express themselves visually. He believed that combining these two elements made communications clearer than typography from the past since photography enhances the message through the type.

This book cover is a good example of using type and photography to create a more expressive design. The photography in the back of the type is a sneaker of the main character of the book, it helps to give more dimension to the cover and draws the eye to really look at the type. With new typography the author also believed that the way the new typography used type was different from the past and the way type was used previously was not as objective as it should be, it used to be more concerned with how beautiful type looked. He believed in standardizing type and the use of asymmetry in design. He also rejected the way ornamental type was used and that type should be more objective. According to him the role typography should play in design is to push the boundaries of design to express the diversity of modern design while staying objective and effective in communicating with the audience.

The role that typography, photography and other forms of media should play in shaping the new kinds of design is through pushing the boundaries of how we think we are able to or can only use them.I think that by exploring the unusual ways that type and photography can be used, and the diverse ways can be made this can allow designers to experiment to find how to make type more unique to their style or uniquely for a project.

Technological advances have influenced the aesthetic forms and theories in early 20th Century design through the production of posters. Posters allowed designers to experiment with distinct colors, types and ornaments for type, illustrations, and photos. Technological advancement would eventually allow designers to have more freedom of layout and combining mediums such as photo and type to make unique designs. When the technology improves it allow designers to explore more because even though they could achieve a design choice it might not be possible to replicate that design on other posters which is one reason they could be limited, due to the labor and expense a certain design choice might be. This helps to inspire other designers to push the boundaries of what they can do with design.
