Lost and Found: Phase 1

My first three images are respectively of broken chicken bones, ripped loose leaf, and a stem and leaf. These images all show an obvious figure/ground relationship. The stem and leaf stick out, as well as the chicken bones, and the loose leaf is very clear and distinguishable. The paper is very geometric while the chicken bones and leaf display organic shapes. My other three pictures are of chipped wood, paint splattered wood, and a tree with moss on it. These were my choices for ambiguous figure/ground relationships. They’re all mostly organic, with the exception of the chipped wood, which shows some type of geometric shaping in the literal chipped parts of it.

The chicken bones and loose leaf were found outside a school by a bus stop; I imagined both came from a student heading home who accidentally dropped some work as they were discarding their food. The leaf and stem was found on the sidewalk by someones house; It most likely fell off and out of the persons yard as a result of wind and rain. As for the wood, I discovered both in a private parking lot by people’s garages. The wood has been chipped at for years, going through many seasons; heavy rains and winds. The paint splattered wood was more fortunate not to experience as much damage over the years, could possibly be much more fresh than the other. And lastly the mossy tree is a result of the rainy weather; The day I took these photos it was raining pretty heavy actually.

I worked on this Phase for about four hours, including traveling to take pictures, choosing and editing six images from all that I took, and then finally writing about them.

COMD1100 Project #1 Amy Lai Pan

Two cracks found on the sidewalk outside the Supreme Court building. The shapes are geometric. This is an obvious figure-ground, as the concrete “supports” the cracks and split. Overall the composition in this shot remains the same throughout, which is lighted with no shadows being cast.

Multiple cracks and splitting found on a sidewalk. This is a geometric piece. Since the focus is upon the dark spot (dried gum?), this shot qualifies as an obvious figure-ground. The surrounding concrete supports this point of focus.

A wall with chipped paint, clearly done with multiple layers over the years. This piece is geometric, accompanied by an obvious figure-ground. There is an imbalance of ground (negative space) against the figure (positive space).

The remains of a plaque that was once displayed outside the Jay Street Metro-tech train station. It is a geometric shape with a unique interior (industrial glue/paste?). This shot is an ambiguous figure-ground, as there is a 50/50 balance of figure and ground. Its composition changes within the interior, as the shadows are slightly cast in between markings.

Similar to the plaque-remains-picture, this piece is placed outside the same train station. This shot is a geometric piece. Its composition changes within the interior of the design, but the outside remains the same. This piece is an ambiguous figure-ground.

This shot was taken from a column inside a train station. It is geometric with the point of focus being a circle, followed by the chipping paint. This is an obvious figure-ground, as the background supports the figure. The orb in the middle of the picture has multiple light sources pointed at it.

Project 1: Phase 1 – Caleb Boadu

This is a stained leaf found laying on little pebbles. I can be seen as an organic shape because it’s structure is not symmetrical. The figure/ground relationship is obvious because you can clearly see the background and object.

This is a Platform Edge found in the train station. It can be seen as a geometric shape because you can see shapes such as squares and circles. The figure/ground relationship is obvious because you can see that object that is being shown.

This is a Manhole Cover found on the ground. It can be seen as a geometric shape because you can see rectangles and circles. The figure/ground relationship is obvious because you can see that object what is being represented but it could probably also been seen as ambiguous because of all the details on the cover.

Not sure what this is, but it looks like a torn bicycle tire . It can be seen as a geometric shape because it’s round, but because it’s torn it could be seen as organic not having a clear shape. The figure/ground relationship is obvious because you can see the object.

This is a floor that has dark red stains on it. It can be seen as a organic shape because you can’t tell what shape is being shown. The figure/ground relationship is ambiguous because it doesn’t have a certain shape.

This is the floor in a train. It can be seen as a organic shape because you can’t cant tell what type of shape is being shown and it just looks to have a tone of colored dots everywhere. The figure/ground relationship is ambiguous because it is unclear and you are most likely trying to find a place of focus.

Weed (not that kind)

This is an uprooted weed found in the dirt. Whoever snatched it up must’ve left it. The general shape is organic since it doesn’t really form a polygon. The figure/ground is ambiguous since really any part can be considered the background.

Fine Dime

This here is a dime, some poor guy is down ten cents. The figure/ground relationship is pretty obvious here. The shape is also geometric. A dime is a circle after all. I picked it up after so I’m up ten cents.

Cared For Sidewalk

This sidewalk is a prime example of the care that goes into the streets. The shape is organic as shown by the roundness and curves. The figure/ground is also ambiguous since any part of this can be the object of focus.

Nine Inch Nails

Talk about getting hammered. This nail somehow got embedded into the sidewalk. The figure/ground relationship is obvious, I mean it’s a nail sticking out the ground. It also has a geometric shape. I just need to know how someone managed that.

Summer's End

This is a leaf. I know, very exciting. It’s shape can be considered organic and geometric with both it’s straight lines and curves. It also has an obvious figure/ground relationship. This also says Summer is ending, which is depressing.

Block Head

This piece of cement has been through a lot. The curves here give it an organic shape. The figure/ground here is also ambiguous as you can’t immediately tell if it’s buried under the dirt or sitting on the surface. Either way it took a lot of force to break it.

Obvious (stable) Figure/ Ground

A receipt that you get after you buy any type of goods like a computer or soda. This receipt may have been drop by someone by mistake, but in this photo you can clearly see that is an obvious figure because you can see clearly what is the background and object.

Obvious Figure

This is a metal cap that is use on the train to cover cables that are below, you can also see that this is a geometric shape because you can see clearly that is a shape of a circle.

Obvious Figure

This is a small pile of dead leafs that where blown away from its tree by the strong winds , this photo also shows a organic shape because you can’t determent what type of shape it is, you can also see clearly what is the background and what is not.

Ambiguous Figure

This is a heater that people use to get warm when the temperature are cold and this photo shows a ambiguous figure because you can’t really tell what is the background and what is not and is also a organic shape.

Ambiguous Figure

this is a floor that people walk on and is also organic because you can’t tell what is the shape of it.

Ambiguous Figure

This is a leg of a table on this photo you can’t tell what is the background and is also a organic shape.
