    chapter 10 summary

Recreation and tourist attractions are the two main topics of chapter 10. Recreation is defined as a new start to an old life. But I simply know it from Parks and Recreation, so when I think of the word I think about playground workers. Anyways, recreation is actually places (parks) made for “bonding” in the outdoors for relaxation and leisure and most are funded by the government, and money that is taken out of the citizen’s and transportation TOT taxes. The recreation management started in the early 1900s, due to the FDR deals that helped recover from the American great depression, which makes sense for the word recreation, because everyone was building new lives from poverty. Recreation works with attraction spots and national parks are very popular as city tourist attractions, most are visited for the view and wild animals. Other smaller parks are more community based, used for the playgrounds.

(P.s. I grew up going to one main park, I love flying on the swings, the water sprinklers, the green grass and huge trunky trees. It’s just to bad that now they’re renevating the park. But well, you’re only a “true” New Yorker if you’ve been here long enough to know a place that used to be something else, because NY sure is indecisive.)

  3. Chapter 10. Recreations, Attractions, and Clubs.

Another revenue generator in the hospitality field is recreation that can include attractions, parks, clubs and others. National parks are included as a Government sponsor recreation. National parks are protected by The National Parks Service since 1916 and its 397 national parks around the country are visited by 300 million visitors. Recreation Management was offered as a community service in the 1920s and 1930s.
Another area that is really big as an attraction is theme parks. Theme parks can focus on one or multiples themes. Examples of some themes parks that have only one theme are The Knott’s Berry farm in California which opened in 1920 or The Hershey’s park which initially was opened for its employees in 1907 but it got expanded and was open to general public in 1971 as a large theme park, specifically “Chocolate”.
However the royalty of themes parks is Disney, which is not just one of the biggest themes parks but also one of the most diverse. Since 1923 Disney has offered parks with unique dining facilities, shops and hotels. Some of Disney’s themes parks are Epcot Center with two major themes Future World and World Show Case, Magic Kingdom, Disney Hollywood studios (MGM), and Universal studios which includes movies studios. Also, Sea World, which is dedicated to the conservation, education and preservation of marine life. But under its wing it also has: Bush Gardens, Adventure Island, Water Country, Sesame Place and Discovery Cove.
A smaller theme park but not less important is the regional park such as Dollywood. This is a civil war theme park located in Tennessee since 1961 and was named Dollywood after Dolly Parton became a co-owner in 1986. In this category we can also add LEGOLAND (various locations), Gatorland in Florida which is an alligator pill and Wet n’Wild in Florida.
Zoos, botanical gardens and aquariums also fall in the attractions category, having around 150 million of visitors a year. We also cannot forget Historic places, Museums, Theaters and clubs which attract many visitors.

Within chapter 10, we focus on recreations, attractions and clubs. There were certain aspects of each that I found interesting, mostly due to personal reasons. With the attractions, museums have always been interesting to me as me and my fiancé love to just walk around and see the exhibits. I’ve always wanted to go and see the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C and I was always curious in what the “Seven wonders of the Ancient world” actually consisted of. When I was younger everyone on T.V would refer to themselves as the “8th wonder of the world” so it’s nice to actually have the list presented to me. When it comes to the Recreations, Disney is always going to have a soft spot in my heart seeing as how I just recently went to Disney World for the first time last summer and I proposed there. The nightly fireworks were amazing and the resort as a whole really showed their appreciation to the guests, in my eyes at least. Lastly with the clubs I did mostly picture older men playing golf and oddly enough, golf seemed to be a huge part of the clubs. But the one thing that kept coming to me was my fraternity Alpha Phi Delta, which I joined in spring ’08. When the mention of the different roles within clubs came up, I remembered what it was like to be a treasurer and how different I viewed what a fraternity was after I joined. These were just some things that I remembered as I read the chapter, also Wet and Wild being the 1st major water park in the U.S is kind of cool, just that I can’t swim so I never liked water parks. Also, Zoo’s. I love zoo’s, so knowing that the first zoo opened in 1950 in Philadelphia was a fun fact for me.

  5. When Walt Disney turned twenty-one he left his home in Kansas and move to Los Angeles to start a new business that eventually changed the world. Mickey and Minnie Mouse were the first of Disney’s characters and were debuted in “Steamboat Willie” ON November 18th, 1928. As the years went on Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney made many more Mickey Mouse which led to them creating new ideas and characters and motion pictures in Technicolor. Walt Disneys films and images turned into much more over the years. His vision created two parks, Disney World in Orlando, Florida and Disney Land in Los Angeles, California. Disney World is the bigger of the two and is a magical place. Magic Kingdom and Epcot are just two attractions at Disney. They also offer resort stays, cruises, live performances and anything else you can imagine. They also offer a college program which I am highly interested in pursuing and I am set up to go in the semester of Fall 2016.

  6. Based on chapter 10, we focus on Recreation, Attractions, and Clubs. The word recreation is defined as activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be fun. Also, allows people to have fun together and form lasting relationships built on the experiences they have enjoyed together. About The National Parks Service was founded in 1916 by Congress to conserve park resources and to provide for their use by the public in a way that leaves them unimpaired; and more than 300 million visitors go to the parks each year. As for the Theme parks and attractions vary according to theme—which might be historical, cultural, geographical, and so on. Some parks and attractions focus on a single theme; others focus on multiple themes. In addition, the heart of Walt Disney World and its first famous theme park is the Magic Kingdom. There are many types of museums, including general, art, science and technology, natural history, history, and military. The club management is similar to hotel management that the main difference between club management and hotel management is that with clubs the guests feel as if they are the owners. However, there have all sorts of clubs.

In chapter 10, Recreation and tourist attractions are the main topics of this chapter. Recreation Management was a community service in the 1920s and 1930s. Recreation is defined as the use of time for therapeutic refreshment of someone’s body or mind. This chapter also talks about National parks. They are included as a Government sponsor recreation. National parks are protected by The National Parks Service since 1916. Its 397 national parks around the country, they have around 300 million visitors every year. Walt Disney is the most popular public attraction destination in the world since opening its doors for the first time in 1971. I thought that was really cool. Wait Disney parks offers unique dining facilities, shops and hotels. Some of Disney’s themes parks are Epcot Center with two major themes Future World and World Show Case. Disney also has Magic Kingdom, Disney Hollywood studios, and Universal studios which includes movies studios. Zoos, botanical gardens and aquariums are also in the attractions category, having around 150 million visitors a year. The first zoo opened in 1950 in Philadelphia. They talked about the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C that has almost 140 million artifacts, works of art and specimen. This chapter talks about a lot of different clubs, there are city clubs, professional clubs , social clubs, athletic clubs, dining clubs university clubs. This chapter had a lot of fun facts and I enjoyed it.

  8. Chapter 10 is about Recreation, Attractions, and Clubs.
Recreation is something people do to relax or have fun : activities done for enjoyment .Recreation allows people to have fun together . On the other hand, the word leisure is best described as time free from work, or discretionary time.Leisure and recreation are as old as human beings. Nowadays we have different types of recreations such us : museums, national parks, zoo, historic sites etc.
Nowadays there are so many choices on how people spend their leisure time .Theme parks and Leisure parks attract a lot of visitors every year. People who are on holiday with children often go to zoo. What I found interesting in chapter 10 is that, the first zoo in the United States was the Philadelphia Zoo, built in 1859. I also learnt that,Founded in 1916 by Dr. Henry Wegeworth, the zoo’s original collection totaled 50 animals. Zoo are very popular in the United States and Canada, about 150 million people visit a U.S. zoo every year.Almost every major city has one zoo. However ,The most world-famous is the one located in historic Balboa Park ( San Diego,California). These facts were really interesting for me.

  9. In chapter 10, they speak about the different theme parks that were built. They tell us how individuals started with just a small idea and later expanded to provide something fun and adventurous for people to do with their family and friends. This chapter also shows how dedicated individuals were and how they made their dreams come true. I learned that theme park managers use the same main management functions which are planning, organizing, decision making and controlling. I also learned that in the early years, Milton Hershey opened Hershey Park for the employees of Hershey’s Company then later on extended the park to the public after adding more rides and attractions. Back in the day theaters were very important because people did not have access to modern inventions such as radio, television, book, etc. In today’s time the theater is not that popular because of the technology we have.

  10. Perryn G. says:

Recreation is the use of time for therapeutic refreshment of one’s body and mind. It allows people to have fun with one another and build relationships also known as bonding. Leisure is time free from work. The National Parks Service was founded by congress in 1916 to conserve park resources and to be used by the public in a way that leaves them undamaged. Recreation management was created in the 1920s and 1930s, when recreation and social programs were offered as community service.

  11. Chapter 10 is about all the good stuff: recreational destinations such as theme parks, national parks, museums, etc. It was particularly interesting to me to learn about how some of these theme parks became the recreational giants they have become. Disney and Universal Studios are similar in the aspect that people enjoy going to these places to “get closer” and have fun around the characters they have grown accustomed to. Disney World is the most popular destination resort in the WORLD! Hershey Park on the other hand, began solely because Milton Hershey knew what she was doing with that milk chocolate. I never would have thought that Hershey Park was originally a leisure park only for employees of the Hershey Company.
I also found it interesting that national parks are created by the government from tax dollars among other sources of revenue. Although it seems pretty obvious, I just never really thought about it. It’s funny that you hear people complaining about the government using tax dollars for prisons and public schools, but you never hear them praising the government for giving them a giant park to go have a blast in.

  12. In this Chapter I learned about the different types of attractions around the U.S. I learned about recreation management which started in the 1920s, recreation programs were being offered to the public as a community service. Also Commercial recreation which provides access to residents and visitors to the wilderness of an area through a guided variety of outdoor activities. In this chapter it was also mentioned some of the theme parks and attractions which vary according to their theme which could be historical, cultural, etc. The Magic Kingdom was Disney’s first famous theme park. Universal Studios is Disney’s big competitor due to its successful adaptation of movies into thrill rides. Also,Epcot is the world’s fair and it has two themes which are future World and World Showcase. To manage attractions and theme parks, similar functions are needed such as planning, organizing, deicision making and controlling. I also learned about the first sites visited in recorded history which are the Seven Wonders. There is also heritage tourism which historic places, sites and museums now take part of it. Some of the historical places in the U.S are The French Quarter in New Orleans, The Martin Luther King Jr National Historic site and The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. There are also destinations that are considered to be major attractions such as Athens which is the capital of Greece and is best known for being one of the oldest cities. Another one is Paris which has beautiful buildings, boulevards, parks, markets, restaurants and cafes.

  13. Daniel Lopez says:

Our greatest moments are best defined with family and friends. Building relationships and spending time together leisurely, recreationally or as chapter 10 stated bonding. An industry that involves tourism by visiting National Parks, theme parks and even historical places. The first sites recorded in history are known as the Seven Wonders of the World e.g. the great pyramids of Egypt and the hanging gardens of Babylon. Today we have museums, National Parks and great theme parks being visited daily by millions of visitors. Our National Registar of Historic Places has over 85,000 listing’s. National Parks cover over 80 million acres with 397 in seven regions. Most of these parks started with a vision; someone had a dream to create something special. Like Mr. Walt Disney, who at age 21 started his first theme park known as Magic Kingdom and introduced the world to the likes of Mikey Mouse, Peter Pan, Snow white and many more characters, parks and adventure, all for the pleasure of recreation, leisure and family wellness.

    Chapter 10

In this chapter I learned about the varieties of recreations, parks, and clubs. In hospitality management, is very important to know about all of these recreations, parks and clubs. Recreation allows people to have fun together and form lasting relationships. I learned that the word recreation has a very unique definition; its defined as the use of time for therapeutic refreshment of ones body or mind. One the first theme park was named Knott’s Berry Farms. It all started during the 1920s in Buena Park, California as a berry farm and tearoom. Chapter 10 gave me a clear understanding about the importance of knowing about other people needs. Most people in their free time in other words leisure, they want to relax, enjoy, and make unremarkable memories alone or with others. We must take in consideration their likes or dislikes in order to full-fill their personal desires. One of the parks that have been inspiration to many themes parks, recreations and clubs is Walt Disney. Walt Disney is known as the place of HAPPINESS. Walt Disney has made their way from bottom to the top; they have put time, dedication, passion, and love in what they do.

  15. Recreation and tourist attractions and clubs are being discussed in this chapter. The National Parks Service was founded in 1916 by Congress. Due to their changes more than 300 million visitors go to parks each year. What I found interesting is that the park service employs 21,501 staff members and that’s not a small number. I like going to these types of attractions, its fun and people who work there try to make it very memorable. With years these parks expand more and more.
