Academically speaking, I have survived from Pre-K up until now; my second semester at City Tech College. I am a quick learner and excel in math and gym whereas science, english and history come up behind. My personal strengths revolve around me being outgoing in a friendly way, starting, holding, then ending a conversation with emotional people or simply communicating by helping out everyday strangers. Blessed with the gift of creativity and imagination, which I hope to use and install into future projects, simply think up the unknown or take another person’s idea to elaborate and broaden it. Life can be easier with more thinkers!
Throughout high school, I volunteered for more than 150 hours at a school library, learning the process of shelving by the Dewy Decimal System, cataloging and checking books in and out. Shortly after, I began working as a C.I.T (Counselor In Training program) which allowed me to work with children third grade and under. I got to know the students one by one and eventually took on the role of a Library Assistant. Moreover, I read to around 25 squirming kid, constantly interacting with them by stopping to ask them questions and patiently waiting for them to answer.
One personal strength that will help in my future of Hospitality Management is language. I like learning them and in the world of tourism or Hotel management, having learned many languages and being able to speak with foreigners will be very useful.

My name is Jaz, and I am a freshman here at Citytech. This is my second semester here. I graduated high school in 2009, and decided to finally take the jump into college last semester. I am from Los Angeles, and have spent the last six years traveling. When I graduated, i wasn’t sure what I wanted to be in life. Through traveling, I found my calling and realized I love the hospitality field. My goal here at Citytech is to achieve my bachelors degree in Hospitality Management. I want to gain the knowledge and experience of every aspect there is in the field.

I currently work in the Sheraton Hotel as a server, bartender, room service, and catering employee. Before this job, I was a hostess at Guy Fieri’s restaurant in Times Square. I am slowly climbing the ladder starting from the bottom. My career goal is to be a manager at a tropical resort, or on a cruise ship. Later on in life, I would love to open up my own bar and lounge.

My personal strengths are that I am a good people person, and I am good at taking and giving direction. My weakness is that I am a hands-on learner. I also love being a leader. Personal interests that enhance my professional attributes are that I LOVE traveling and meeting new people.

I am Jazmine Mitchell and it is nice to meet you all! 🙂

  3. I’m Andrew, most people call me Dru. I feel my best strength in terms of hospitality are dealing directly with customers, and most importantly, making sure that everyone has had an enjoyable experience. I’m also a very easy person to work with, which is definitely a major advantage in the field. Although I have no academic experience in the field yet, I have been working in a restaurant and bar for three years and have been waiting tables in the dining room for two. My career aspiration is to become a restauranteur. I want to own restaurants and know all that there is to know about every aspect of the business. That being said, I want my academic career to create that possibility. A personal interest that I have that may enhance my profession is music. I love music, and I started playing guitar almost two years ago. I have a long way to be before I master it, but I see progress and that’s all that matters.

  4. I live in the United States since 2004 and when I was in High School my goal was to go into Nursing. My parents always wanted me to work in the medical field. For two years I was in Hunter College and got all my prerequisites but Nursing was never something I wanted to do. I felt it was something my parents chose for me, that’s when I decided to make my own decisions and decided to get into Hospitality Management field. This is my first semester at NYCCT. I am not sure where exactly I want to be in this field but most likely it will be working with restaurants and culinary.
My personal strengths probably would be having patience and good communication with people since I work with Western Union. I have to deal sometimes with the hardest people but I still manage to smile and speak calmly with them. I like to keep things organized and always finish what I start.
As of right now, I want to explore more about Hospitality Management and get more into it and one day open my own restaurant or hotel.

  6. Hello, my name is Marjorie Silva. I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Caracas, Venezuela. As a youth I always loved food so I attended culinary school which made me love food more. I moved to the United States almost ten years ago. Since moving here, I learned the language, achieved an Associated in Sciences Degree at LaGuardia Community college in the Dietetic Technician program. While pursuing my Associates, I worked at the Russian Tea Room as a prep cook while my English was improving. My career experience also includes catering corporate chef, seasonal cook at the 2013 US Open, and Cook at the 2012 Food and Wine festival. I am also a freelance production assistant for a corporate event company. All of these opportunities have opened my interests to other areas in hospitality, such as consultant, recipe tester, marketing and communications, and food magazines. I feel like a have endless doors that I want to open and experience in the hospitality/ food service world.
Some of my career goals include working in a test kitchen, a food magazine or a food set prep for cooking shows. But the list can go on, so I am open to new opportunities. Long term goals include teaching children to cook, writing a recipe book for children, and/or writing a bilingual column about food in a newspaper or magazine
Some of my personal strengths are that I am a fast learner and a curious one, I am goal oriented, detailed oriented, and I have the ability to adapt.
I love to travel, I try to do it a couple of times a year. In every trip I incorporate food of course, mostly the typical cuisine, markets and traditional things. Street food is a must. After every trip I make at least one dish or drink or dessert at home that I discover on that trip.
I also read every possible recipe that crosses my path. If I have the time I pick one and test it at home. If I see a new food or fruit I buy it and try it, so I keep enhancing my culinary attributes.

  7. SaarrahRahim says:

I like trying new things. My interests are broad and I enjoy trying things outside of my comfort zone. I discovered this when I signed up for my Automotive/Collision Repair class High School on a whim of pursuing something new. I ended up loving the class, especially the professional work environment and the enjoyment of working as a technician in the shop. Not only did I end up enjoying this new field of interest I ended up being really good at it. I love to learn new things and overall I’d say I’m a well rounded individual. In the past I’ve worked in many different fields and environments. I began my first job as a receptionist at a medical office, which is where I learned my first concepts of communicating with others, I then transitioned to a clerk position at a grocery store which fit right into my schedule. I worked there for about a year and now I am currently working at IHOP where I’m a hostess. This new environment is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I enjoy communicating with others and providing customers with service, I plan on staying and hopefully promoting to different positions so I can learn the different responsibilities in the restaurant. Other than work and school I am also an active member at my local mosque where we are always hosting and attending events. I love my religion and I enjoy meeting new people at the events. We travel a lot and I look forward to somehow combining my love for my religion & travel along with my major. If I could choose one word to describe myself it would be optimistic. I look forward to all the things I wish to try and complete in life.

  8. My name is Mengmeng Zhou, and this is my second semester. When I was in high school, I decided my major for college is Nursing. My parents are very supported to me. After that, I went to college and I changed my mind. I thought for long time, and felt nursing is not what I wanted to do. Then I choose hospitality management because I like eat and cook. I don’t have any academic experience, but my academic goal is get more and more knowledge and experiences of hospitality management. In order to easy to find a job. In addition, I have never worked in hotel, restaurant, and also I am not sure what I want to do yet. But I just want to work in hotel or restaurant. About my personal strengths, I don’t think I have any strengths. If must say: I think maybe friendly and patience. I like try new things in cooking, although I am not a good chef. The personal interests that enhance my professional attributes that I make my own different kind of food from cooking.

  9. I was born and raised in the heart of New York City, in a place called Brooklyn, and even though I’ve been here all my life, there are a lot of places in New York City that I have never visited. I hope to learn the roles and responsibilities of managing my own business so I am excited to see what HMGT 1101 has to offer. This is my second semester at City Tech. When I was younger, I always thought that when I got to college I was going to major in Elementary Childhood Education because I love teaching and helping kids. Also because my sister wanted to be a teacher and I wanted to be like my sister but when I was exiting high school I decided to major in Hospitality Management because of the various paths it would allow me to choose from. I don’t have any experience in the field of Hospitality Management but I am willing to learn all this major has to offer. This program has a lot to give and I am going to take full advantage of it.

When I first got to City Tech, I planned to take this program for Culinary Arts. I don’t know how to cook and although I want to learn how to execute a couple of dishes for the mere fact that I love to eat, but now I’m beginning to lean more towards Event Planning. I think Event Planning might be a better fit for me because I have an “Eye for Fashion”, I love socializing and most importantly I love to shop (for me or other people). I am the “go-to” person when my friends want to go out, be it to a restaurant for dinner or even something simple like game-night in the house. They will come to me with an idea and I am usually the one that makes it all happen.

I like to think that I am an amazing human being and although I’m not perfect, I try very hard to be. I am very confident and have high self-esteem. I do not let anyone “rain on my parade” or try to bring me down. I am a “people person”. I hate staying home, not having anything to do. I would rather be socializing with my peers or doing something productive with my time. I’m so understanding that I never hold grudges or stay angry because life is precious and holding on to build up anger inside will only destroy your happiness and you as a person. I also realized, from experience, that you are much more joyous if you let certain things go. That is why out of all my friends I am considered to be the funny on. I’m the silly one who makes everyone laugh and makes light out of dark situations. I’m not the confrontational type but if I have to go there I will. I usually take the role of peacemaker and evaluator. Sometimes life tries to bring us down but the key is to get back up and never give up.

  10. I am 19 years old. I was born in the Bronx but raised in Puerto Rico until I was 9. I attended NYC iSchool in Soho, I graduated in 2013. I decided to take a year off of school and now I am here aiming for a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management. I am most interested in the traveling and culinary part of hospitality. I currently work in a food truck called Made. We travel around the city and cater to private companies. My personal strength is writing; I enjoy writing about anything. Since I already have culinary and guest service experience I hope that these next four years are not as hard as everyone says it is.

  11. Hi Everyone,

I am 18 years old. I was born in Mexico City, but I have lived half and half of my life here in the United States and Mexico. I graduated high school in June 2014 from The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria, which is an all women school. I am planning to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management here in City Tech.

My father has a Mexican restaurant and a food marketing company. Therefore, I have worked with him in both businesses since I was 14 years old. I used to be his assistant in the marketing company by filing invoices and monthly statements from the restaurants he sells to every week, I used to check what the expenses were being made by the company and many other things. In the restaurant I was a waitress and cashier. I then stopped working with him for a while and decided to work somewhere else to obtain different experiences. Now I have been a hostess in an American restaurant for seven months. My long term goals are to have experience as an event planner, restaurant manager and eventually open my own restaurant.

  12. My name is Evan Sorongon. I am 24 years old and have decided now to change my major in Hospitality. I studied at Kingsborough CC where I received an AAS in Physical Education. I then decided to go to Florida Atlantic University to try their Hospitality program. Things didn’t seem to work out due to the fact that I wasn’t actually using the University because I was assigned all online class and was paying an arm and a leg to be there. I then went back to Physical Education this past semester at Brooklyn College but truly decided it wasn’t for me. I now am attending City Tech to pursue a degree in Hospitality.
I currently work in an Italian Restaurant called Pizza D’Amore in Mill Basin. I have been working here for almost five years now. I started off as a delivery driver and since then I have worked in almost every position from counter man, to waiter, barista, kitchen, and even part time manager.
When working I see myself as being able to accomplish the task at hand. I am very confident and am able to communicate well with customers. I am very calm and I work well with my fellow employees. Multi-tasking is something I enjoy while working. I also understand the balance of having fun and working at the same time.
What I would like to improve in the work place is learning how to be a little more professional in dealing with customers. I would like to improve my grammar and my knowledge in food preparation and ingredients. I would also like to learn more about the expensive put into running a restaurant. Through this program I hope to gain this experience and some more to better my future in hospitality.

  13. Kevin Chen says:

    Hello everyone!!!

My name is Kevin Chen. I was born in the United States but my parents were born in Guangzhou China. Growing up, my parents were taught that education is highly important. Without an education, you could not get a high paying job. So my parents taught me to work hard in the profession I wanted to do. While I was growing up, I looked up to my sister and followed what she did during high school. Since my sister major during high school was Accounting, I decided Why not. Until now, I have taken many accounting courses but recently I felt like I should expand more. So I decided to try the hospitality program. So far, I feel nervous and somewhat excited about doing this and I hope Professor Akana and the rest of the program’s professors will help me through these 2 years.

My name is Xiaocui Wang, but I’d like to be called Vivian. I am a full time student in New York City College of Technology, majoring in Hospitality Management. My academic goal is to graduate with Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality management. I remember when I was in high school, I heard this major from my friend. She told me that this major refer to management of hotels, restaurants and travel agencies. It is really attracted to me when I heard her talking about all the fun stuff that will be learning in this program. So I am here to find out where exactly I want to be in this field. My personal strengths probably would be caring and patience since I work in the clinic. I have to deal with a lot patient and have good manner while talking to them. I hope I can improve my communicate skill, so I won’t be shy talk in front of a lot people.

  15. My name is Adriana Diyarza-Osorio. I’m a 20 year old “chicana” – born in the United States, carrying Mexican heritage.

Ever since kindergarten, I followed art. I painted and drew for hours. Art was my favorite class and hobby and it remained that way until high school. I attended Thomas A. Edison Vocalization and Technical High School. This high school required every student to follow a major of their choice and required them to maintain high standing grades in order to continue being a part of the program. On our senior year, we would be required to take an exam to certify us in our major. This gave us an advantage to every other high school graduate. The program would assist us in obtaining a job or an internship in our career right after high school. This seemed to be the perfect opportunity for me. I choose “Graphics Art and Design” as my major. After 4 years of the program and graduating with my diploma along with my Adobe Certification, I came to the conclusion that this wasn’t it. This wasn’t my career.

I was disappointed as a high school graduate because F.I.T. (Fashion Institute of Technology) was no longer my destination. As confused as I was, I decided to continue my education and hoped to discover my dream career at Queensborough Community College. However, little did I know that it wasn’t only in campus where you discover your dreams.

At the age of 4, I remember my mother burning her right hand; leaving her incapable of following her daily routine. As only daughter in the household, my mother decided to teach me how to cook. And it all began with sunny side up eggs. At first I thought of it as a punishment – a chore. I didn’t like it one bit. My mother eventually recuperated yet, I was still cooking. As I got older, I began editing my mother’s recipes. And one night while making dinner, I realized it was this that I wanted to pursue – Hospitality Management.

I graduated from QCC with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. This is my first semester in City Tech as a Hospitality Management student and I look forward to moving onto from being a hostess of a restaurant to becoming owner of a restaurant.

  16. MRamirez says:

My name is Martin Ramirez, I am a transfer student from Hostos Community College. I am a full time student and intend to graduate NYC College of Technology with a bachelors degree in Hospitality Management. Before Hostos community college I actually attended Baruch College and intended to get a bachelors degree for Accounting. This was short-lived as my interest was not there, also within one semester I was pledging a fraternity, taking five courses and working 45 hours a week. I had a significant drop in my GPA after that semester as my priorities were not set in the best order. Ultimately it was well below a 2.0. I took some time off and when I returned, I focused on my grades more and maintained a 3.8 GPA. I never really knew what I wanted to do until one day when I was working in my last job as a concierge at a condominium and a tenant mentioned that I should look into becoming a hotel manager, I researched it and realized that was the direction for me.
Ultimately I intend to be a Hotel manager, just working within the hotel industry seems amazing to me so I am actually very happy about going to college now since my classes actually are hotel related. I feel as if I always have high standards and maintain a positive attitude in any challenge that I encounter, I know these strengths will help me within my career path.

  17. My name is Stefania. I moved to New York about 3 years ago. I’m from Poland. This is my third semester at City Tech. I just changed my major from Fashion Marketing. From the beginning I was not really sure what I want to study over here. However, now I’m 100% sure ,that Hospitality Menagment is good choice for me.

I’m working in catering company mainly as a waitress since 2012. I like it . I love to prepare decorations, flowers ,set up everything nicely or help in the kitchen. I learned a lot over this 3 years.
So far I don’t know if I will work in hotel or maybe as a party planner but I believe that this course or other major classes help me.

I think that my personal strengths are hard working and patience. It helps me a lot in my job and in my life as well.

  18. V.Reid says:

If I don’t remember anything from growing up which I do. What has stood out so vividly was at such a young age I knew what I wanted to already be when I grew up, was a chef. I grew up in Brooklyn and still reside in Brooklyn, living across the street from a supermarket was a blessing that was my second home. I stayed in the kitchen wanting to learn how to cook as I watched my mom. This passion has been in me since a young one. My interest grew as I got older because my mom went to school for hospitality. I realized culinary was tied into hospitality, of course I’d love to work in a hotel doing what I love as well as traveling and expand my knowledge on food. I went to High school of Hospitality Management, there is where I went into cooking class my first year and did it my whole high school career, I loved it. I practically did every event my school hosted. I wouldn’t say it was hard work because I enjoyed it to the fullest extent, it was a lot of fun. Being able to cook, eat, and serve gave me some experience which is one of my personal strengths.

  19. Perryn G. says:

My name is Perryn Garrett. Growing up I have always toggled with either becoming a chef or becoming a game developer/designer. When I enrolled in City tech I had no idea they had a culinary department so I majored in computer science. I have been a CST major four semesters and I am currently contemplating on switching majors to have a degree in culinary arts. I love playing games since I was a kid so I thought it would be the best choice to get into the industry so that’s why I applied to city tech. Once I saw they had a culinary department I decided to start taking classes to further develop my cooking skills. I have no career experience in both fields and I haven’t really done much in developing games yet, although I have a book where I write down many of my ideas, and as for cooking, I tend to buy some ingredients and try to come up with meals to make for my family. My strength is my passion. I love the different adventures when you play a game and the smell of different herbs and spices while cooking. There is no better smell than bacon wrapped steak coming out of the oven.

  20. My name is Mohammad Shehadeh I prefer being called Moe since I was little. I am 19 years old and this is my fourth semester in college and of course in citytech. I was a liberal arts major my first two semester in college because I didn’t know what I wanted to do yet and then I figure out by the end of my second semester that I wanted to be in hospitality management so I have taken courses towards HM before during my second semester and so on in my third semester. Why I wanted to major in HM because of the interaction with one person to another and having the opportunities to learn different types of values from working in a hotel to working at a restaurant and to becoming a manager in them and also owning your own restaurant and knowing about how to start off the right path to having a successful business. My strength are interacting with people and helping them with there need however my weakness would be cooking but that’s why I am here to learn different aspects in hospitality so I can achieve in many things because I know it can help throughout my career. Some day I would like to own my own business wouldn’t want to say what it is yet but I have a great idea.

  21. Daniel Lopez says:

    Hello Classmate’s,

I am still trying to figure out what I really want to do. After 34 years in the military and 31 years in the Airline industry, I can truly say I’ve been bless; with a wonderful family and the great opportunity to travel. I am a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA) and hold a degree in AAS and BS in Liberal Arts. For me education is an everyday lifetime of opportunity.

My strengths as a leader is helping others to be more resilient. I enjoy being an entrepreneur this gives me the opportunity/flexibility to be adventurist. Our family culture as many is eating together and enjoying great food. Unfortunately most of the restaurants are either ok or just above par and I find that my wife’s (also a pastry chef) cooking far exceeds most of them. As a family we love to cook and enjoy entertaining. Therefore my intent is to learn as much as I can in the Hospitality Management Program in order to assist her with the family business (DeAzúcar Bakery).

My hope and dream is that one day we can open a resort like none other…. That would be awesome! And I can’t think of a better place to learn about the Hospitality and Tourism Industry than in the heart of New York City.
