In chapter 9 I learned that tourism is a big part of countries that are developing which helps them gain positive balance of trade with others. The benefits from tourism is that it provides governments with substantial tax revenues. From the long-term prospects international arrivals expected to reach over 1.8 billion by 2030. The historic development of tourism was divided into five distinct periods and in those five periods traveling became more influenced. Throughout these five periods traveling also helped the influenced of building towns and cities. Traveling in cars began in Germany and now it is the American way of life. Airlines are an integral factor in travel and tourism, 5,500 planes are in the air over the U.S any day. Ecotourism destinations are located in underdeveloped and developing countries.

  2. In chapter 9, I have learned that tourism represents a large percentage of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Tourism has been divided into five ages in chronological order. First it was Pre-Industrial (Prior to 1840) and during this time people traveled in the Middle Ages mostly for religious or trade reasons. Then the railway age changed the technology of travel which had widespread implications for society in the U.S. One of the reasons for getting railroads in the U.S was to move goods and people from one region of the country to another. After a while cars and buses became more convenient and that caused a decline in rail travel which pushed us to the next age the automobile age. Traveling by car began in 1895 in Germany and creates accessibility to remote locates. Traveling by bus is also convenient and economic mode of travel. The jet aircraft age is an integral factor in travel and tourism. Travelers are paying less but carriers are spending more on fuel and other costs which leads to cutbacks and layoffs. Also, airline alliances will allow them access to each other’s “feeder markets”. A feeder market is a market that provides the source which in this case is the passengers for a particular destination. Finally, the most recent is the cruise ship age. The cruise market has increased a lot in recent years. Rates vary from about $95 – $850 per person a day depending on your income. I also learned that international travelers spend $94 billion in travel in the United States and also 59.7 million international travelers visit the U.S each year.

  3. Based on chapter 9, it is about that tourism represents a large percentage of GDP and a way of gaining a positive balance of trade with other nations for many developing countries. As for the benefits of tourism is that provides governments with substantial tax revenues, and offers the greatest global employment prospects. Tourism has been divided into five ages into five distinct ages or periods: 1. Pre-Industrial (prior to 1840); 2. The railway age; 3. The automobile age; 4. The jet aircraft age; 5. The Cruise ship age. Then, that changes in the technology of travel have had widespread implications for society in the United States, one of the reasons that led to railroads in the U.S. was the need to move goods and people from one region of the country to another. In addition, traveling by Car, it began in 1895 in Germany and it is the American way of life nowadays. Types of traveling by bus service: Local, charter, tour, commuter, airport, urban, and rapid transit. Also, about the Airlines, competition between airlines to provide lower fairs has had a significant impact on increased air travel. The Economic Impact of Tourism is that international travelers spend $94 billion in travel in U.S. Generally, most ecotourism destinations are located in underdeveloped and developing countries.

  4. Tourism has become popular thanks to the development of transportation thru the years. The rail way was the beginning of the development of tourism because of the building of towns and cities. Historically, the invention of the car, the jet and cruise ships has promoted the increase of tourism. Since tourism never stops, and it is a constant of twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, all year round, the revenues are substantial. Only in the U.S, international travelers had spent $94 billion in past years. Tourism is based on an interdependency of others for business, such as travel, lodging, food service and recreation.
Thanks to organizations, agencies, corporations and bureaus, tourism can be considered a multiplier effect. Travelers spend money, eat in a restaurant and purchase goods which generate further use of money. However, tourism can have a negative impact in communities, that is why organizations like World-tourism.org enhance internationals understanding, prosperity and observance of human rights to preserve a positive tourism.

  5. In chapter 9, I have read about tourism and some new things that I have learned are very interesting. Tourism was divided in five different ages – Pre-Industrial, The railway age, the automobile, the jet aircraft and the cruise ship age. Tourism plays big role in our lives when we are traveling and visiting other cities and countries. International arrivals expected to reach over 1.8 million by 2030. First time people traveled by car was in Germany in 1895. With years tourism is improving more and more thanks to the technology that keeps on expanding. Now theres so much agencies, tour operators, travek corporations and more where travelers spend a lot of money for their own convenience.

    Chapter 9 summary

I learned that tourism is the worlds largest industry. Tourism is expected to grow in the next 15 years. Europe, East Asia, the Pacific and the Americans are considered the top receiving areas. Nowadays, people can benefit from the hub and spoke system. The Hub and Spoke system is a system of air transportation in which local airports offer air transportation to a central airport where long distant flights are available. Tourism has a lot to offer to the public and more to come with new generations.

  7. Chapter 9 is all about Tourism. Tourism is known to be the world’s largest industry. The Tourism Indusrty is open 24/7, 365 days a week employs 8.8 percent of global work force and accounts for 9.1 % of GDP Worldwide. It also provides government with substantial tax revenues and offers the best employment prospects. There are 5 sections of the development of tourism throughout the ages. Pre-industrial, the railway age, the automobile age, the jet craft age and the cruise ship age. Pre industrial goes back to religious and religious travel in the middle ages. The railway age was the first to make mass transit possible. The automobile age began in 1895 in Germany and is considered today’s way of life in the U.S. Many different companies offer rental cars to customers to make travel easy and mostly are provided by airports. Airlines are the best form of travel in my opinion. They are able to take you further than any car or train. Cruise lines are a form of luxury travel.

In chapter 9 I learned that tourism is the world largest industry. Every country gains a lot of money from the people coming in and out of the country. Tourism has the greatest global employment. It allows country’s to open up their borders so more people could take vacations. Vacations would bring more income to the country. There are five different ages of tourism, the Pr-industrial age, the railway age, automobile age, the jet aircraft age and the cruise ship age. The railway traveling way used to transport goods and people to different places. People first started traveling by cars in Germany in 1895, now its how most Americans travel and get around. Traveling by the bus was made to allow travelers to relax and enjoy the ride. The hub and spoke system lets passengers travel but aircraft from one small to another the maximized the passengers loads to save money on fuel by 20%. The cruise market has grown over the years. The carnival cruise lines make the most money. There are three different levels in the cruise market. There is a mass market where the people pay $95-$195 per day. Middle market where the people pay $175-$350 per day and a luxury market where the people pay $400 per day. Eco-tourism is mostly with the underdeveloped and developing countries. Cultural tourism is the interest in cultural events. Heritage tourism is the historic preservation; the nature tourism is motivated by nature. culinary tourism are based on adventures and volunteer tourism safe and cheap traveling experience.

  9. Daniel lopez says:

In chapter nine we cover the largest Industry in the World; Tourism, an industry that employs over 259 million people almost one tenth of the global workforce. An industry that does not sleep 365 days of the year 24/7. Tourism has evolved in the past century from rail, cruise, automobile, and aviation. What was once was a necessary means of travel for religious and trade reasons. Has flourished to an industry that generates over 100 billion in tax revenues. Many countries depend on tourism as a means for survival and their main source of GDP. Additionally Tourism provides opportunities for social and cultural interactions. According to the 2020 vision, it’s expected to generate 1.8 billion in international travel. Places like East Asia the Pacific, Europe and the Americas as the most popular destinations. Not too long ago, the cost of traveling was only affordable to few. Amazingly the cost of travel has reduced tremendously in the last few years. And tourism has grown to an industry that affords many choices, such as Culinary, Heritage and even Volunteer Tourism.

  10. Tourism is considered to be the world’s largest industry. The United Nations has a specialized agency which is tourism. Tourism has many benefits some of which include, providing governments with substantial tax revenues. The top areas people tend to visit the most are Europe, East Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas. The idea of driving cars produced motels and a network of highways. Studies show that about 9 million Americans go on a cruise ship each year. Also, international travelers spend about $94 billion traveling in the U.S. The tourism industry represents 1 in every 10 jobs.

    Chapter 9 (Summary#3)
Tourism is the main focus of chapter 9 and it seems to me that countries really depend on other countries for the money tourism brings. (As well as employment, hotels and merchandise.) More like, if every country kept to themselves never leaving their own land, the whole world would go bankrupt. Transportation also plays a really big part in tourism, as back in the days many towns were created around stations, because of the people transportation brought. In America, traveling by car is very common for tourist, they tend to rent cars at the airport, so that they can travel independently. However, In the airplane section, the competition is very high as technology progresses, now there are planes with less weight and more coverable milage, yet still remain expensive to create or buy. Airport incomes are unstable, except for the fixed cost, each flight depends highly on how many seats are used up. Meaning how many people are tourist/business people and the outcome affects the employees and owner salaries/income as well as everything needed to provide the customer a safe and comfortable flight. And with the missing airplanes in news recently, I don’t expect those airports to be doing as well as before. There are more tourist vacations in the traveling area then business travelers, due to the economic issues and they tend to be quick and short. America’s a pretty expensive place to travel to and many visitors end up using a lot of money, but most leave with sappy/happy memories!

    Chapter 9 summary

Tourism is the largest industry. The world tourism is a specialized agency of the United Nations. They play an important role such as continuation of economic development and international understanding respect for human rights and freedoms. Tourism is important due to the fact that they have a large percentage of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). It also helps gain a positive balance of trade with other nation. This is very important due to the fact that if a nation doesn’t have a certain item or product and another nation wants a certain items or product from our nation, trading each other and having a reputation is important for both nations. I also learned that the World Tourism Organization and World Travel and Tourism council declares travel and tourism to have many things such as accounts for 9.1% of the GDP, employs 259 million people and they are the leading producer of tax revenue. Today, since traveling is much easier to get places, tourism with definitely becoming much better and will become a leading factor. I feel like travel and tourism will continue to be successful for a very long time.

  13. MRamirez says:

Chapter 9 emphazied the importance and effect Tourism has around the world. It seems that the worlds largest industry is in fact Tourism as it accounts for 9.1% of the gross domestic product worldwide. As I read on, the advances in mobility in general had an obvious and very direct influence in tourism, Nowadays it seems that 75% of rental cars seem to take place in airports. When it comes to airlines, increased competition between the airlines has lead to better prices and therefore better prices for tourists. The advancements in technology will lead to this industry to thrive, such is the case with the new airplane, 787-class aircraft, as it allows for better prices and it shows that advancement in technology has and will always lead to better results in tourism. Cruise ships are a rising form of tourism, as 9 million americans cruise each year, the fact that american cruise ships cannot operate casino-type gambling leads to ships being “Non-American” to create more profit. I was also not aware that business travelers tend to be younger than the normal tourist and it would make sense that they do not stay as long as leisure travelers. Tourism also has to be careful as tourism may need to be political, environmental as well as social climate sensitive in certain places. An increase in number of tourists may effect the sociocultural degradation as well. Finally the trends in tourism seem to now be the norm such as increase in online booking, cruises as well as employment opportunities. These aspects just cement the idea that tourism will only grow and is a rapidly developing industry, which only makes me happier that I have chosen to pursue a career in hospitality management.

  14. Tourism is the world’s largest industry and it’s a specialized agency of the United Nations. Tourism takes part in the development of international understanding, peace, prosperity, and respect for human rights and freedoms. The benefits of tourism is that it provides the government with substantial tax revenues and offers the greatest global employment prospects. There has been Five ages of Tourism: Pre-industrial (prior to 1840), the railway age, the automobile age, the jet aircraft age, and the cruise ship age. All of these ages have occurred due to greater technological advancements. The economic impact of tourism: $100 billion generated in tax receipts, 1 in 10 jobs generated by tourism and international travelers spend $94 billion in travel in the U.S. This impact on the economy by Tourism is due to The Multiplier Effect which consists of having revenue obtained by the spendings of the tourist is used to purchase more goods to improve the business and thus generating more money. Also the employees of the business spend their income in other local goods and services. Some organizations that are promoters of Tourism are: National Tourism Organization (NTO), Travel Industry of America (TIA) and State Offices of Tourism. The Social and Cultural impact of tourism is that it allows social interactions to occur, in this way people can learn from different cultures and be more understanding of each other which promotes peace and prosperity. There is also Ecotourism which is more focused on individual values. Ecotourism destinations are mostly located in undeveloped countries, thus they are kept small in order to allow more in depth tours with educational opportunities. Furthermore, Sustainable tourism should use environmental resources efficiently, respect the socio cultural authenticity and contribute by being understanding and tolerant. Also, they need to ensure long term economic operations. As long as there are technological advancements, there will be significant improvement in the Tourism industry.

In chapter 9, I learned that tourism is the world’s largest industry, and is open 24/7. It is also the leading producer of tax revenue. Different segments of tourism include travel, lodging, food service, and recreation. The five ages of tourism are pre-industrial, railway, automobile, cruise, and aircraft. In one year in the US, there are 59.7 million international travelers who spend 94 billion dollars. When tourist spend money, it is recycled to buy more goods for which ever company they travel to. WTO recognizes that tourism enhances world peace, prosperity, and respect for human rights. Tourism categories are cultural, heritage, nature, culinary, and volunteer. Tourism is increasing everyday, and offers the greatest global employment prospects.

From Long-Term Prospects, there is interdependency between the various segments of tourism: Travel, lodging, foodservice, and recreation. Summary 3
    Chapter 9

In the middle ages people travel mostly for religious or trade reasons. Nowadays things changed. People travel everywhere. Tourism is one of the largest industry .
About 259 million people work in tourism industry.
Tourism is about people . People who are traveling themselves of their own free will move from one place to another (locally or internationally ) . Purposes for which they are moving may be mentioned a lot , but nevertheless I think it is simply the most common is to visit some interesting places , learn about their culture and history.

Nowadays we have a lot of opportunities .Changes in the technology help people.
We have several different kids of tranportation . Every single person can choose whatever want. Faster Trains , cars (started 1895 in Germany),rental car companies, different types of buses ,airplanes and very common cruises.

What is more ,modern tourist is an area extremely developed – in many countries around the world , it is one of the most important (or most important) source of income.

International travelers spend $94 billion in travel in U.S. This has a positive impact in US economy.

I also learned different types of tourism ,such us: Cultural tourism, Heritage tourism,Nature tourism,Culinary tourism,Volunteer tourism. This chapter helped me more understand tourism industry.

  18. Perryn G. says:

Tourism is the world’s largest industry with 24/7 service all year around. It accounts for 9.1% of the gross domestic product worldwide and employs 8.8% of the global workforce. Tourism is the leading producer of tax revenue which governments benefit from. Tourism has been around since the pre-industrial age, where people travel mainly for religious and trade reasons. Technological advancements such as rail roads, automobiles, and coach travel had a wide impact for society in the US. The rail roads influenced building of towns causing hotels to be built near rail depots thus opening the West.

  19. Tourism is basically when people travel to countries other than their own, for leisure or business for no more than one year. Tourism is used by developing countries as a way to build their GDP so the trade between other countries balances out. It is an all year economy driver and produces the most tax revenue. Traveling by car started in Germany (1895) and it allows people to access remote areas. It is also an American lifestyle since a large number of Americans main means of traveling is by car. Traveling by car led to rental car services and most cars are rented at airports by travelers. I also learned about the Hub and Spoke system, which is; A system that allows passengers to travel between smaller cities using a hub. So a person who might want to travel from Tyler to Waco would take a plane from Tyler to Dallas and then from Dallas to Waco. This benefits airlines because they service more people which means making more money and they also save on fuel.

  20. Tourism is travel for recreation, leisure, religious, family or business purposes, usually for a limited duration. Tourism is commonly associated with international travel, but may also refer to travel to another place. The world’s largest industry, tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. Tourism as an industry that is raptly going international arrivals expect to reach over 1.8 billion by 2030,Europe, east Asia, the pacific, Americas are the top receivers. Ages of tourism is very interesting, per industrial revolution travels in the middle age was mostly for religious and trade. Planes are the best way to travel in my opinion, ships or boats I would like to past on but it get you from point A to B. railroads are a great source of traveling as well. Taking the train makes good sense in densely populated areas; high speed networks are already well-developed often drawing most of the traffic that formerly went by air. Travels from different countries enjoy coming into the us, international travelers ninety four million dollars in travel expenses. New York City being one of the top if not number one most visited by tourist in the us.

  21. Chapter 9 was very interesting because I never realized how big of an industry tourism really is, although it makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. Not only does tourism literally bring cultures around the world together, it is incredibly sustainable because people will always want to travel. The mere fact that 8.8% of the global work force is employed in the tourism industry is astonishing.
The industry of tourism is a very vague term however, because tourism is made up of many other smaller industries such as food and beverage, travel agencies, and hotels. Literally any job one can have in the hospitality department has some kind of tie into tourism, whether indirectly or directly.
“The Five Ages of Tourism” is an idea that divides tourism into five periods based on means of transportation available. It includes the pre-industrial period, the railway age, the automobile age, the jet aircraft age, and the cruise ship age respectively. And it is very intriguing that each period is responsible for setting or further progressing the standard in means of transportation and tourism. For example the first transcontinental railroad was almost exclusively responsible for linking the East and the West of the US. Although that was back in the late 19th century, to this day, ways that we travel is still progressing. I find it amazing that the Boeing 787 Dreamliner can manage a flight between NY and Moscow on a single fueling. If only Phileas Fogg had such capabilities…
