This is photograph is by Micheal Kenna ā€œCentral Park Reservoir, New York City, USA, 1998ā€. I picked this image because Iā€™m a fan of the frame within a frame rule. The image has you looking through a fence where in the distance there is a city with a symmetrical building in the middle. I think the intent of this photograph might have been to show the viewer this quiet serene scene. The city that is usually so loud and chaotic looks so simple and silent being so far away. The feeling I get from this photograph is peace. Micheal Kenna work is done in black and white with a minimal style to capture images. So I think his work have that same peaceful feeling to them.

In this image I instantly noticed the frame within a frame element which in this case is a wire fence. The fence frame is very thin and has some plants as a silhouette at the bottom. Another element that I noticed after looking through the fence is the symmetrical building. The buildings have spiky cone shaped roofs that stand tall above the rest. The third element that I think works in this image is figure to foreground. We just have to look through the fence to see the subject is the buildings. The dark buildings contrast with the bright white background. I think with all these elements combined make for an interesting image.

HW 1 Composition ā€“ Terence JohnsonĀ

The photo I selected was B-BOYS, 1981 by Janette Beckman. The picture depicts three African American youths striking a group dance pose. The subject matter is the three men striking similar poses, they are located at a hotel lobby. Based on the description this photo depicts B-Boy dancers in the early 80s. The intention of the photographer is to show African American youth culture in the 80’s. The boys are dressed in eccentric clothing and seem to have a positive attitude. I get the feeling of fun, excitement, and a cool atmosphere.

The three elements that stood out in this photo are Repetition, Diagonals, and leading lines. I see repetition in the 3 B-Boys because they are in similar poses and dressed very similarly. The staircase highlights a diagonal in the photo making it more interesting. Finally, the 3 B-Boys are a good example of leading line because they are aligned in a straight line, forcing your eyes to view them one after the other.

Homework 1- Photo Description (By: Julian F. Georgi)

The photo I choose for this assignment was from Suzanne Stein. The image in question was a lady posing with a cigarette in her mouth, a pack of cigarettes in her left bra, and her left hand holding her wrist. This photo was visually engaging to me because it feels like Stein went out to the city and took a photo of a stranger without any prep time. Stein also captures the photo in portrait mode instead of landscape. I think this also helps the photo convey more emotion because instead of focusing on what’s around her it’s instead focusing only on her.

For the formal elements I have chose symmetry, patterns and repetition, and dominant eye. For symmetry if you slice/fold the photo down the middle it makes 2 perfect half’s. For patterns and repetition the figure is posing behind a gate that has a black diamond pattern. Finally for dominant eye her left eye the lady is showing her left eye more than the right.

Kensington – Suzanne Stein Photography

The image and photographer I chose to write about is Suzanne Stein’s ā€œKensington: Chelsey Allegheny Ave”. Along with all of Steinā€™s photographs being disturbing it holds the real and raw truth of people’s lives. Her work makes you step back and think about how there are people around the world who are suffering this way, she gives us a front-row seat to reality. Stein’s image ā€œKensington: Chelsey Allegheny Aveā€ is a close-up of narcotics in a woman’s hands being ready to be used at that same moment; it made me feel uncomfortable but realize how real the world is. In this world there are two types of people; people who want to make something out of themselves and people who just gave up on life. I believe that Stein’s intent was not to capture these people in mockery but to document the human condition of people who are suffering.

Based on the Steve McCurry video, McCurry used the most important elements of design which were Frame within the Frame, Leading lines, and Patterns. The image I chose from the video is the timestamp of 1:17-1:20, the photo of two people in the middle of a circular door frame with square windows on each side. The square windows depict a pattern of small diamond-shaped holes that reflect its shadow on the floor also causing leading lines. The overall image was taken from the point of view of the frame within a frame, I chose this image because it almost makes you feel like you are inside the same room the photo was taken in.

Suzanne Stein, ā€œNew York Street Twoā€. The picture looks like it was taken outside, most likely on the sidewalk of the city, as in the background you see rods that are placed for construction. The image showcases a person up close to the camera, where the person has piercings all over his face, and tats all over his upper body. Piercing can be viewed as a style such as a nose rings or earrings, and the person may have these piercings to show his style and from my perspective, it is very unique  from most, as not a lot of people tend to have more than five piercings on their face. The feeling I get when I look at the picture is uncomfortable or unsettling because I wouldnā€™t like to have that much piercing on my face and it looks very painful to have.

The moment you look at the picture, you see a figure up close which shows one of the Photographic compositions known as ā€œFill the Frame.ā€ The person is very close to the camera, and you can see all the details on the person’s face, such as the wrinkles, eye color, and the piercings. Another Photographic composition that you notice is the, ā€œDominant Eye.ā€ You can see the dominant eye on the left side of the picture as itā€™s bright and you can see the being very clear with a lot of detail such as the reflection from the eye. With lots of piercing on the face we see another Photographic Composition known as, ā€œPatterns and Repetition.ā€ The piercings are shown at nose, lips, cheeks, forehead and eyebrows, and the color of the piercing is silver, which is one of the colors that we see the most. These elements can help you analyze the picture and can help you understand the image better, such as lots of silver piercings that showcase the use of patterns, which lead to show the person love having piercings, and it could be him showing off his style.
