Due Nov 8th, 12 pm, Noon. 4 pts. A final project proposal of 300 words min plus a gallery of images for inspiration otherwise known as a mood board.

The goal of the Final Project is to create a series of 10 related images on a theme.

You may choose to do either:

A series of portraits (not 10 pictures of 1 person but 10 pictures of 10 people) OR

A portrait of a neighborhood

OR another theme that you are passionate about: dogs, skateboarders, basketball players, street fashion to name a few possibilities.

Decide which assignment(s) you most enjoyed. What are you most interested in? Then consider: do you have people to work with? What is your schedule like and what is practical?

Final Project statement: Describe your project. What is your theme? What is the story you want to tell? What is the subject matter? Where will you shoot and when will you shoot? What kinds of techniques will you use?

Find a minimum of 6 images by 6 different photographers that show what you want your project to look like. Put them in a gallery in the post with your final project statement.

Check the weather! Right now the best days to do this assignment are Thursday, Friday , Saturday, Tuesday or even Wednesday morning before class.

Working outside on a sunny day, photograph subjects and their shadows. Your subjects could be anything visually interesting: a statue, a person, a tree, a dog, a bridge. What counts is the light falling on it. Please no fire hydrants, garbage cans, street lights, etc. Make it beautiful.

Think of the sun as your main light and move so that it is a front light, a side light and a back light.

Take 10 photos of different subjects where the shadow falls away from the camera otherwise known as front light.

Take 10 photos of different subjects where the shadow falls to the side otherwise known as side light.

Take 10 photographs of different subjects where the shadow falls towards you otherwise known as back light.

Each photo should be unique.

Post to an album on Flickr and send the best examples of each type of light to the class group.

Due: November 1, 12:00 pm, Noon.

Due Oct 25, 12 pm Noon. 4 pts.

Create a series of 30 portraits of at least 3 different subjects using window light or outdoor diffused light.

For each subject, shoot some in front view, some in three quarter view and some in profile.

Try the 5 lighting styles: front light, Rembrandt light, split light for front view poses, and broad light and short light for three-quarter poses. When you are working with a window, you can’t move the light source so you and the subject must move.

You should be near or next to a window during the day. 

The window can be in the photo or you can just use the light from the window.

Pay attention what is in the frame and make sure the background adds to the photo and is not distracting.

Your photos should use light and expression to be expressive. No props. If you have curtains or venetian blinds, you may use them as elements in the photos.

Experiment with different expressions and gestures and different framing (how much of your subject is in the frame.)

Upload the 30 photos to OpenLab and put them in an album. Send your best 3 – the best of each subject- to the class group.

Due Oct 18, 12 pm. 4 pts. 30 photos including reflections.

Reflection – 1. the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it.

Working outside during the day, photograph reflections to create strong compositions that include a combination of elements that are seen directly and by reflection. Reflections can be found in water, windows, and cars among other surfaces. Do not confuse reflections with shadows. Working outside during the day, take enough photographs to end up with 30 interesting photographs with reflections. No credit will be given for improperly exposed photographs or out of focus photographs. No credit will be given for photos taken inside without sufficient light.  Upload to an album on Flickr. Send your best two to the class group.

Portrait of a place-Select a park or playground near you. You will take photographs in the same location two weeks in a row. Photograph your location at two different times of day or in two types of weather to capture the place and the people who use it in a series of 8 final photos.

Complete project and presentation due October 11. 10 pts.

Portrait of a Place-Your shots should cover a wide range of approaches: long shots to close ups, people including at least one person in motion, animals and plants. Each photo should use light and composition in compelling ways. Show the full range of the techniques that we have tried in class.

2. Second set of 40 Photos in an album labeled Shoot 2 on Flickr due October 11 at 12 noon.

3. 8 final photos adjusted in Lightroom in an album labeled Midterm on Flickr due October 11 at 12 noon.

4. A brief presentation- 3 to 5 minutes – to the class of your project on Oct 11.
