   The image that I choose was “The Lams of Ludlow Street” “Drying laundry” image as it really stood out to me with all the colors and the sky with the background of New York City. The image shows clothes being hung on a rope getting air dried with a view of the city, the hangers are only red and pink, this could be the owners favorite colors. The purpose of this photograph could be that drying your laundry doesn’t always have to be in the machine, but it could be with a cool view of New York City on your roof. The image also feels like that New York City is his background and that air drying his clothes on his roof is something that he has always been doing and nobody can tell him anything. The mood/ feeling of this image is giving chill vibes, once you put the clothes to air dry you can sit back crack a cold one and admire the city view as your waiting for the clothes to dry, you could even fold the clothes up there too! The first formal element that I choose to describe this image is “Rule of Thirds” because when you put the lines in the image it points on the rope being used to hang the clothes and the buildings in the background. The second formal element I choose was “leading lines” as it can be seen in the rope that is holding the laundry in a straight line from left to right in the image. The third formal element I choose was “symmetry”, the hangers were all lined up and it looked satisfying to the colors of the hangers all going down in a line. Another element that can be seen in the photograph is “pattern” with the hangers that go from pink to red hung on the rope.

   HIP HOP

   The photograph in question, titled ‘Eric B & Rakim NYC 1987’ and captured by Janette Beckman, is part of her Hip Hop collection. It features the rap duo, Eric B and Rakim, situated against the backdrop of a graffiti-covered wall in New York City.Janette Beckman’s primary intention with this photograph was to encapsulate Eric and Rakim’s essence, as portrayed through their clothing, jewelry, overall look, and the overall vibe they exuded. This image effectively focuses on the image they projected through their music, demonstrating that they were “flossing,” a word used in the 90s to speak that you were dressed well and displayed wealth.The mood conveyed in the photograph simply reflects how they presented themselves in their city, showcasing their style and success.

   2.The photo with Rakim and Eric B against a graffiti wall uses photography composition elements . It keeps the background, which is the wall and graffiti, from distracting from Rakim and Eric B, following the “Figure to Ground” idea. By not placing the subjects in the center but using the “Rule of Thirds,” it creates a visually pleasing and balanced look. Additionally, the photo feels balanced on both sides, showing “Symmetry” in the framing and spacing. These choices show the photographer’s skill in highlighting Rakim and Eric B while blending them well with the graffiti backdrop.

   1. The photographer that I chose is Thomas Holton, his photo collection The Lams of Ludlow Street IV, “Sleeping in the kitchen”. This subject matter is a young Asian female, laying down on a sofa bed in her small sized new york city apartment. The space inside the apartment is tight, so the refrigerator is right besides her and it’s very close to the entrance doors. I think that the photographer intention of capturing this moment was to share the human life experience which could be struggling for some people who grew up with limited resources, finances and other factors. There is a sense that the young girl accepts the living conditions she’s in and although it may be a difficult to live in tight spaces, you can see that she’s making the best out of her situation. She has a roof over her head, she is living comfortably in the environment that feels safe, there’s a feeling of excitement, youthfulness, adventure and a carefree spirit in the way the person is living there life. We get to see this through the photo, as it captures the story of the girl living in the sofa bed in her kitchen style apartment. I resonated with the image because I have also experienced a similar time in my life, during college years where I had to adapt to my environment by living uncomfortably but still being grateful to have the a living space and a home where I could be myself and have the space I need.
   2. The rule of thirds, is applied in this photograph, keeping the composition aligned with the three grids when capturing the photograph. The second element that is used is symmetry, since the image was captured you can see the young women almost centered and her face and body composition does appear symmetrical with the rest of the photo. Lastly, there is also leading lines when capturing the photo.
