Guneet Kaur – Food and Coffee during the Civil War

The most fascinating thing about Civil War Soldier’s diet was the hardtack. It was a large thick cracker which had a lot of nutrients. There were a lot of things that made it unique. First of all, it can be preserved for more than 150 years. It was very simple and inexpensive. It was only made up of flour salt and water. Hardtack was served with coffee and it had a lot of advantages. If hardtack have bacteria in it hot coffee kills it and soldiers were able to eat healthy hardtack. Another advantage was that coffee softens the bread.

During the war, it was hard to get the proper diet because of the conditions but hardtack was considered as an important source of nutrition.

The food item that I cannot live without is rice. I think it is an important source of energy.
