First thing in the class was asked was that you don’t know about graphic design. The only thing I could up with was a new perspective on design with each new projects. This is the only thing I still wouldn’t know how design changes with new projects. We discussed about Art Design History, which were Industrial Revolution which gave new machines, new products. A lot of topics were discussed like Swiss International Style came in 1950 and Helvetica came in and took over. Contemporary typeface were sans serifs. Commercials came in 40s that means selling became popular through products, ideas, and propaganda. Designers use very critical thinking to design products and to come up with headlines.

We discussed what time period what style were invented. Dada in 1920s art nouveau, Bauhaus in 1900-1910 and organic shapes. Graphic design invented when Gutenberg bible was printed. Russian came up with a typeface which looked like tough and blocky looking because they wanted show they were tough. Contemporary style was getting popular Paul Rand, Milton Glaser, and Massimo Vignelli. Massimo came up with subway. We discussed employment and professor gave example of this girl who really to work for this company. She gave her portfolio and told the director to look at it. He loved the portfolio of the girl but he had no position for and next they called her in. So there are ways to get job.

At last we watched ted talk of Chip Kidd, he talked about how designs book covers. He uses clarity or mystery to get to the audiences. He said charity is blunt, honest, and sincere. It’s clear you don’t have to think so much. With mystery, it demands to be decoded. He talked about visual vernacular and how you can apply it to your work. For example, he talked about the book he designed for David Sedaris and the title was “all you need is ever beauty” and it had nothing to with the story. He used to fortune cookie to design the cover. He designed a book by David Rafoff and he read it and said he is fraud and out of frustration it took out the marker and wrote fraud on it and that’s everyone liked it and it sent out to the world like that.

He like to create emotional impression through design. He use visual vernacular to solve design problems. Gulp is another book that he designed the cover of it. He explained how did the design so he had selfie of his mouth tongue out. He basically used that for the cover of the book. The design of the mouth really helped to understand. The book talked about digestive system so opened mouth did justice to the cover. It creates a emotional impact on audience to pick up the book and read it. He also talked about coke your on and it’s headline. We students had great laugh on it. He said even big companies fail on there biggest project. It makes no sense at all but people still like coke because it’s so famous.

All this discussion in the class was very helpful on the first day of the class. The ted talk gave me new perspective on design. I always learn something new from design. It was refreshing to know everything after the summer. One of the student asked how do we charge for a project. That really mad think I should have asked that question as well. It depends on the project that you are on basically. Selling projects and designing has emerged so much from where it started. Previously explained about Russian used used blocky and red color to really signify what they are.
