” In Defense Of The Classroom”

In Hellman’s article, ” In Defense Of The Classroom”, she discusses her feelings toward the virtual learning and the memories she had within a classroom before the pandemic, Hellman speaks about the change and issues faced due to virtual learning. In the article, she describes the comfort of physically being able to stay in a classroom with a teacher as wonderful. As stated, “The physical classroom, shared with a spectrum of folks with disparate nationalities, ethnicities, religions, gender identities, and perspectives, offers an important education beyond mere curriculum”. This shows the value of being able to learn within the walls of a classroom. In order to build a community as an online class, there should be communication with peers and professors, as well for being able to reach out to one another without hesitation for any sort of help throughout the pandemic.

I agree with Litzy communication between peers and professors is essential in building a community within a classroom, whether it be online or in person. In Hellman’s article, “In Defense Of The Classroom”, the author describes the classroom setting in detail as something average and typical yet traditional and sacred in a sense. “Witness the length of chalkboard; seats with worn tablet arms; a professor’s desk with drawers full of chalk stubs and abandoned exam blue books; a computer projection console with a skittish electrical connection. And yet, the classroom housed something very valuable, something that has been lost and mourned in the transition to online instruction.” This student’s description of the classroom gives us a better understanding of what it means to her and other students. To build a community equal to or better than an in classroom approach will be challenging, however if we form new ways of communication between student and teacher and between students we can adapt to this new change to our environment.

An excellent and thoughtful response! Thank you! I love your use of a quotation to support your ideas There is something sacred about the classroom, and one day, we will all get back there. Meanwhile, our communications here will be paramount. and the challenge will make us all stronger.
