The story I will be focusing on will be Cinderella. For my concept I will change the setting into a film noir time period (1944-1954). The premise would involve a prince hiring a detective to find the owner of a shoe. Cinderella will become a femme fatale, a character that often appears in this type of film.

One scene I will focus on will be an office scene at night with the prince and detective. This scene is crucial to the setting up the story. The next scene I will focus on will be the tragic death of Cinderella with the prince holding her in his arms. I may do a third scene to better establish the flow of the story.

Story Concept for “El Cadejo”

BACKGROUND: In El Salvador, the dog-like creature is known as El Cadejo, is said to look like a dog but is not a dog, has deer-like hooves and also moves like a deer, rather than a dog. The white Cadejos are known to be benevolent and eat bell-like flowers that only grows on volcanoes. The white Cadejo protects people including drunks, vagabonds, and people with grudges from all evil footsteps and even La Siguanaba (a shape-changing spirit), and bad choices which are sometimes caused by the evil black Cadejo. The black Cadejo is malevolent and lures people to make bad choices. The black Cadejo has glowing red eyes and eats newborn puppies and sometimes the black Cadejo is said to be the devil himself. The black Cadejo is said to be able to stand on two feet like a man and swiftly throw punches on its victims, letting them know that they are no ordinary dog.

STORY: Two brothers who walk into the house of a black magician. During a storm, he asks the boys to help him with some logs for a fire. Both boys slack on the job and ate the man’s food. Once he finds out the little bit of food he had is missing and that there is not enough wood for his fire, he puts a curse on the road that leads to the boys’ village. Voices bother the boys and when they turn their backs on the voices they get turned into creatures: a white cadejo and a black one. After going back to their village in their cursed form they get kicked out and have no choice but to wander.

Overall Project Description:

 

Create an Editorial Illustration for use to accompany an article in a magazine, printed or online. This project is broken into stages with peer critique and critical feedback given at each stage, spanning 4 weeks in total.

  • The final illustration must be created using a limited palate of black, white, and one or two other colors
  • It should be made using a combination of traditional drawing / inking skills and digital coloring.
  • Final art should be made to fit the real magazine’s specs. (Approx 9” x12”)

Work will be judged on the clarity and cleverness of the overall concept, thoughtful utilization of composition, the use of value, and of course the skillfulness of overall technique.

 

GRADING BREAKDOWN:            

  1. 50 % project grade Submit a PDF PROCESS BOOK guiding us through the project from inception to conclusion. Carefully SCAN your process work. This should include : Your Source Material,  Brainstorm, Thumbnails, Concept Sketches, Value Roughs, Related Sketchbook Work, and Final Art. Carefully Label all of your work so that your thought process is CLEAR. Be sure all of it is presented well: facing the right way, no shadows in the picture, good contrast, etc.

Idea for Final Project

For the narrative illustration, I decided to choose the story of Little Red Riding Hood as my basis. For those who don’t know, the story is about a little girl, dressed in a red cloak who takes a trip to her grandmother’s house in the woods to deliver her food.  When Little Red arrives at her grandmother’s house, she takes notice to how her grandmother doesn’t look human. Come to find out it is a wolf, and the wolf proceeds to eat her. I decided to take the scene where she gets eaten by a wolf as my focal point. I want to make it so that she is eaten by an alien instead of a wolf. The genre of this illustration is horror. Also, the setting would take place on an alien planet

My topic for project 3

*I don’t know why but openlab isn’t letting me put the link… but the name of the article is “Black Hair, Still Tangled in Politics” from the New York Times.*

My topic is about how black hair can get “entangled” in society and in political issue. I choice this topic being that I am an African American woman with tight coily hair, I could relate to the black girls and women being discriminated and bashed for their hair (it hasn’t happened to me but I want to speak out on this issue, visually). Another thing is that, this issue isn’t so much recognized in the list of social issues, and it is even often disregarded. Everyone needs to be aware of this issue because rejecting and depriving someone because of what naturally grows out of their head leads to decline of self esteem, especially to the younger generation. So this isn’t an physical issue, but a mentality issue as well. People would often say, “well it’s just hair”, well, this hair is being rejected from jobs, suspended/expelled, from schools and bashed even by the U.S government. So yeah, it’s a pretty big deal. As for the article. it discusses hair discrimination not only in politics but in society as well, yet it isn’t seen as an serious issue. I like the title of this article, Black Hair, Still Tangled in Politics, you can almost sense the tiredness and the “ugh, not again” in the title, which helped me visually what I want for a concept. As for my idea, I want to visually represent what us black women and girls have to go through today because of hair discrimination through metaphor.

Project 3: Editorial Illustration Research

The topic I chose to focus project 3 on is how black youth tend to be sentanced as adults more than white youth. This topic is important to me because this is a constant issue in the black community. In most cases treating these kids as adults doesn’t help them and just gets them stuck in a point in their lives. In other words the system tends to work against them most of the time.
