β€œ80s Design is Alive, Well, and Living in 2019” by Nadja Sayej, published in PRINT, March 6, 2019

A lot of the designs that came out in the ’80s incorporated a lot of different kinds of technology. The influx of technology and the development of graphics software have a great impact on graphic design. And when neon lights appear, the night takes on a different color than before. And neon is not just a decoration, it also has a high artistic value. And neon bright colors can show a strong sense of contrast, the future and reality of the staggered, giving people a sense of time and space staggered.

Shea Stadium Neon Murals by Richard Poulin Design Group, New York, 1986. In these glass murals, we can see athletes depicted in neon lights at night, and brightly colored neon lights are used to show sports in the dark. The hitter’s swing, the fielder’s reach and the runner’s gait. Visual features include: colorful neon lights, obvious dynamism, technological style, high contrast between night and neon lights. The overall style expresses the publicity and hard work of the athletes. In the dark, light is the easiest to attract people’s visual and attention. And the colorful lights will stand out more than the white ones.

And this poster from “Ready Player One” comes from a very young original artist. Post-90s concept designer, whose name is Broken Finger a(ζ‰‹ζŒ‡ζ–δΊ†a). This designer is very good at science fiction scene design. And this poster is also very science fiction, with streets, cities, neon lights, numbers, and machinery. And we can see how neon is an important visual representation of this poster. In this poster, the number four occupies the largest position and it’s very technological. Because in the background are a bunch of dark color houses, and the number 4 is made up of streets, giving the number 4 a neon effect.  Especially with the help of ordinary houses around, it creates a sense of technology.
