Overview
For our next reading assignment, we will be reading and annotating two texts written by architect-designer-artists affiliated with the Bauhaus. And one contemporary essay about Bauhaus designers.
- Madeleine Morley; Master László Moholy-Nagy Saw Photoshop Coming, 90 Years Ahead of Time (2019), AIGA Eye on Design
- László Moholy-Nagy; Typophoto (1925): found in our main text Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong on pages 32-34.
- Jan Tschichold, “The Principles of the New Typography” 1928: found in our main text Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong on pages 35-38.
Here are the questions to which you should respond in your reading response:
- According to these authors, what is their aesthetic approach, and why is it better than the traditional design/typography of the past?
- What role should typography, photography, and other media play in shaping a new kind of design?
- How did technological advances influence aesthetic forms and theories in early 20th Century design?
The authors aesthetic approach in each reading is making the act of typography design even more distinctive and better visually than it was before. Although before during the traditional times the designs were pretty decent, the act of “The New Typography” gave it a new meaning and new look. They were able to provide better visuals of design by incorporating other types of typefaces and even better image quality to make it stand out and lot more colors. It made the designs stand out more and with the addition of the photography mixed with the typography was allowing the designers to go more in depth. The way typography, photography, and other media should play in shaping a new kind of design would be by just being out there with bits of messages. The reason why I say this is because designing is changing every time with no stop in sight. It provides sometimes a bit of peace and relaxation which is a coping mechanism which is always useful. The way it influenced designs in the early 20th century was by introducing posters and ads with color. With this addition it gave each context more meaning because it allowed the pieces to stand out even more. The ability of this gave each design abit more depth and more meaning which is always fascinating. The best thing about this, is that its still changing and more forms are still coming to fruition now.
