Great work on the Time Capsules everyone! For today’s session:

  1. Read this post, Two Readings on Ways We Use English,  and the materials contained: “3 Ways to Speak English” by Jamila Lyiscott and “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan . Both are linked in the post
  2. Complete the Participation Activity below.

Participation Activity

(Due before 10 am Thursday, Sept. 10)

Discussion Board Title:  I am Articulate!

Discussion Board Instructions: Your post on this thread will have two parts.

  1. In your first short paragraph, consider the ideas in Jamila Lyiscott’s video and Amy Tan’s essay and write about the language used in your home environment. You might describe how it sounds (as Lyiscott demonstrates) or describe a specific person you think most influenced how you speak (as Tan does). You might recount, as Lyiscott does, messages she’s received from others about her language. Both  Lyiscott and Tan discuss how their English spoken at home affects the English they speak outside of the home, but you can write about other languages if this is your experience.
  2. In a second short paragraph, respond to the person who writes on the discussion board before you. Pick a specific line the person wrote that stands out to you and explain why it stands out.

Remember to post before 10 am on Thursday, Sept. 10!
