Whitney Dale – Problem

One recent problem is being very tired and lazy. I have slept for more than eight hours and I am not very motivated to do any work. I try to do my work but I always end up watching movies and YouTube videos, if not I’m focused on my business. But since quarantine began along with this online semester, the problem I’ve been experiencing is getting assignments done on time. Especially helping me with organizing schoolwork. So what I tend to do is use my planner at my work area and checklist all the assignments I need to do during the week. But, it is certainly a struggle trying to keep up with this routine every day. But I do try my best.

In “ New York Day Women” by Edwidge Danticat, The two main characters are Suzette and her mom. Suzette is a youthful Haitian lady who works in the city and her mom is a Haitian outsider who is stuck in a rut. The author shows how life is like for immigrants and how they adapt to our society. As you read on the daughter is showing more effort to adapt to society working in the big city but the mother is hesitant to adapt. Suzette accidentally saw her mother who will never go outside of Brooklyn, now strolls the streets in Manhattan. According to the narrator the mother was afraid to take the subway which then, Suzette worried. Due to shock, the daughter began to follow her mother, then finds out the hidden side of her mother. In this short story the speaker’s mother exhibits feminist ethics. The reason is because her taking care of other people children is a traditional normative for women. As Suzette follows her mom, she then loaded with memorable statements of things her mom has advised her before. As she was getting to know her mother in this process as well. For an example she remembered when her mother asked her “would you give up her seat for an old lady like her”. At the beginning of the story she says she would give up her seat sometimes but not all the time. Then in the end her response changed, due to the motivation, appreciation, and respect for her mother. To see the hard work she puts in daily and end up finding out that her own mother was also working hard without her knowing.

In the end I feel like the relationship between her and her mom will always be a growing relationship. That is the reason “New York Day Women” is such a amazing story to read, her mom’s challenges with American culture, envision Suzette’s when she sees her mother strolling in Manhattan. Throughout the story, the relationship between Suzette, and her mother changes. Where the daughter shows deontology ethics. In the beginning she said that she usually wouldn’t give up her seat for an elderly but, in the end she remembers her mother’s words and realizes that giving up her seat is the right thing to do. Which shows how much respect she has for her mother. This was the development in her character, where she had changed her state of mind, and decides to exert kindness the way her mother did. The mother also grew, in terms that according to the narrator, her mother was adjusting to her new life in America and finally began to be a part of the city, as shown from her experiences in the city. I think this is more the relationship that people have with their parents as they grow up. It goes from, confuse love for her mother to Suzette learning to accept, appreciate and love her mother more then she thought.

Homework for Explication

ENG 1121 (Prof. Scanlan)

March 23, 2020

“New York Subway” is a poem written by Hilda Morley. Reading the poem, Morley uses the symbol of kindness towards good actions. I will explicate a few lines in the poem, it will show you how the symbol of kindness can make another person day. Also as I read the poem, I saw how explication and enjambment was used as she describes what’s around her. She went in depth on who was down there and what was going on in the subway as she was going about her day. As she wrote her poem you can see how each line wouldn’t stop at the end but it will continue to the next line which why I say enjambment was use in the poem.

On that Saturday evening, Morley describes the types of people that was riding the subway such as high schooler or office women’s. Also, she mentioned the actions that was going on in the station for one another. “The beauty of people in the subway that evening, Saturday, holding the door for whoever”. She explains how people holding the door for someone rushing for the train or giving up your seat for an elderly person are good deeds and she also telling readers that we can also learn to preform good act from each other. Everyday people face many choices in life in which deciding on doing a good deed, whether it’s a life changing situation or just for the moment. As we continue to help one another out of kindness, the choices we make can encourage others.

Whether we know it or not the New York subways isn’t just a place to go where you need to but a place where we meet new people and learn from one another as you go. As strangers to one another we can all lend out a helping hand as we all come together. As people we perform the act of kindness because it’s the nature of us humans. Hilda Morley poem can open your eyes to the little things that may not seem all that big as a symbol of kindness.

Whitney Dale – Reflection

Many people aren’t working for safety reasons. Especially when other people are getting sick due to the corona virus. Even though people may feel like their their nothing to do or they tried of doing the same stuff over and over. But for the last two week I have been  enjoying work. Yes, I still work while all of this is happen but it gives me a opportunity to get out of the house when others can’t.

Also, during the past two week I’ve been having more time to watch so many childhood movies which I do enjoy. Due to staying home and not doing nothing can get bored some time so watching so many movies keeps my mind off this corona virus situation. It gives me more time to myself and I love it.

Whitney Dale-Challenges “Doing School” -Composition 2, ENG 1121-398, S2020

The challenge that I’m facing doing school right now is not having the energy to get up and start on my work earlier in the day, instead I tend to wait until later on that day to do it which causes frustration. Due to the virus COVID-19 causing places in the U.S. to lockdown and everyone to stay home. As I stay home I tend to stay up longer than I usually do on school nights. So since I’m “out” of school I will still tell myself that I’ll do my work later because my mind would make me feel like I have all day to do it. Me not physically going to school and being in my house all day makes me lazy towards my work. So for now on, I will be going to sleep earlier then usual and I’ll be planning out my agenda a head of time to make my day more smoother.
